Ovarian leiomyoma with an epithelioid differentiation in a dog.

A 12-years-3-months-old female Toy Poodle underwent ovariohysterectomy, and an 8-mm ovarian mass was incidentally identified on pathological examination. On the cut surface, the mass consisted of a yellowish-white solid oval area surrounded by a soft white crescent-shaped peripheral area. Histopathologically, the oval area was composed of interlacing fascicles of spindle neoplastic cells with elongated to cigar-shaped nuclei, whereas the crescent-shaped peripheral area contained solitary or clustered polygonal to round neoplastic cells scattered within myxoid stroma. Immunohistochemically, bot

Two cases of perivascular epithelioid cell tumor of the uterus: clinical, radiological and pathological diagnostic challenge.

BACKGROUND: Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) is a rare subtype of mesenchymal origin tumor composed of epithelioid cells which exhibits immunohistochemical co-expressions of melanocytic markers and smooth muscle markers. CASE PRESENTATION: In the first case, malignant uterine PEComa with vaginal and multiple lung metastasis was misdiagnosed preoperatively as uterine leiomyosarcoma despite a preoperative punch biopsy and immunohistochemical analysis of the metastatic vaginal mass. In the second case, synchronous uterine PEComa showing benign histology with lymph node involvement wa

Sleeping Beauty Transposon Mutagenesis Identifies Genes Driving the Initiation and Metastasis of Uterine Leiomyosarcoma.

Uterine leiomyosarcoma (ULMS) is a malignancy, which arises from the uterine smooth muscle. Because of its rarity, aggressive nature, and extremely poor prognosis, the molecular mechanisms driving ULMS remain elusive. To identify candidate cancer genes (CCG) driving ULMS, we conducted an in vivo Sleeping Beauty (SB) transposon mutagenesis screen in uterine myometrium-specific, PTEN knockout, KRAS mutant (PTEN KO/KRAS) mice. ULMS quickly developed in SB PTEN KO/KRAS mice, but not in PTEN KO/KRAS mice, demonstrating the critical importance of SB mutagenesis for driving ULMS in this model. Subseq

Ataxia-Telangiectasia Mutated (ATM) Protein Signaling Participates in Development of Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension in Rats.

BACKGROUND Previous studies revealed physiological and pathogenetic similarity between vascular smooth muscles cells with severe pulmonary arterial hypertension and tumors. The DNA damage response was found in both pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) cells and tumors. The ataxia-telangiectasia mutated proteins (ATM) pathway is considered an important factor in the DNA damage response of tumor formation, but its function in the development of PAH remains unknown. MATERIAL AND METHODS The Sprague-Dawley rat PAH model was established. Three weeks (Group M1), 5 weeks (Group M2), and 7 weeks (Gro

Symplastic glomus tumor - a rare but distinct benign histological variant with analogy to other 'ancient' benign skin neoplasms.

A 78-year-old woman presented with a nail deformity of the index finger of the left hand associated with paroxysmal pain upon cold exposure. Histologically, a well-circumscribed tumor of 3 mm diameter was found in the dermis. The neoplastic cells in some areas were of pronouncedly variable size and cytomorphology, mostly epithelioid in shape, with eosinophilic cytoplasm and indistinctly defined cell borders. Pronounced nuclear pleomorphism and atypia were striking features, but no mitotic figures were noted. Multinuclear cells were present as were numerous small-to-medium vessels throughout th

Spurt bleeding from a calcificated gastrointestinal stromal tumor in the stomach.

Calcifications within primary gastrointestinal tumors are rare. Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is an unusual nonepithelial tumor that develops in the gastrointestinal tract. In this paper we describe a case of spurt bleeding from a calcificated GIST in the stomach successfully treated by partial gastric resection. A 77-year-old man was admitted for chest discomfort and loss of consciousness. Endoscopic examination revealed spurt bleeding from the top of the submucosal tumor. No other lesions or points of bleeding were found in the stomach. Emergency partial gastrectomy was performed, an

Single-cell RNA sequencing in silent corticotroph tumors confirms impaired POMC processing and provides new insights into their invasive behavior.

OBJECTIVE: Provide insights into the defective POMC processing and invasive behavior in silent pituitary corticotroph tumors. DESIGN AND METHODS: Single-cell RNAseq was used to compare the cellular makeup and transcriptome of silent and active corticotroph tumors. RESULTS: A series of transcripts related to hormone processing peptidases and genes involved in the structural organization of secretory vesicles were reduced in silent compared to active corticotroph tumors. Most relevant to their invasive behavior, silent corticotroph tumors exhibited several features of epithelial-to-mesenchymal

Multiple Glomus Tumors in the Left Foot of 41-year-old Woman. A Case Report.

Glomus tumors are very uncommon neoplasms arising from glomus bodies. They differ in the proportion of components, i.e. smooth muscle tissue, vessels and glomus cells. The most common location of this kind of tumor is the subungual area of digits. In other locations, glomus tumors are very rare but have been reported, among others, in bone, lungs, trachea and stomach. Glomus tumors are often misdiagnosed because of diverse clinical presentations. They can be asymptomatic, may lead to cosmetic discomfort, but clinical presentation often involves pain, tenderness and cold hypersensitivity. We pr

Bladder leiomyoma presenting as uterine pedunculated leiomyoma.

Bladder leiomyoma is a rare benign mesothelial tumor that is more commonly reported in women. Most patients present with frequent urination or obstructive urinary symptoms. Here, we portray a 50-year-old woman who presented to the clinic with abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding. Imaging showed a lobulated mass at the posterior aspect of the urinary bladder. The pathology of the surgery demonstrated a benign mesenchymal neoplasm composed of interlacing bundles of smooth muscle fibers with a whirling pattern, which eventually confirmed bladder leiomyoma. Although this tumor is benign, it can be

Abdominal lymphangioleiomyomatosis in a man with Klinefelter syndrome: the first reported case.

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is an uncommon progressive disease characterized by a hamartomatous tumor-like proliferation of smooth muscle cells that occurs most often in women. This disease commonly involves the lymph nodes, lungs, and mediastinum, and rarely the abdominal sites. We report a case of mesenteric LAM occurring in a 37-year-old man affected by Klinefelter syndrome with a 17-year history of androgen replacement therapy. Histology revealed a hamartomatous proliferation of spindle cells surrounding multiple ectatic lymphatic spaces intermixed with lymphatic follicles. When subject

[LEIOMYOSARCOMA OF THE OVARIAN VEIN WITH THE RENAL VEIN INVASION: A CASE REPORT].

A 56-year-old woman had complained of two year's consecutive left-side abdominal pain. Retroperitoneal tumor was diagnosed and the patient was referred to our institute in December 2014. Laboratory data including endocrinological activity and serological markers were within the normal ranges. Imaging studies showed that the solid tumor measuring 5 cm in diameter was uncovered in the retroperitoneum, between the abdominal aorta and left kidney. The patient underwent surgical removal of the tumor with the left kidney because the mass was highly adhesive to the left ovarian vessels and left renal

Malignant glomus tumor of the lung with multiorgan metastases: case report and literature review.

Glomus tumor is an exceedingly rare neoplasm that is derived from cells of the neuromyoarterial glomus or glomus body. It rarely occurs in the visceral organs where glomus body may be sparse or even absent, such as the stomach, intestines, mediastinum, and respiratory tract. It is unusual for a glomus tumor to demonstrate atypical or malignant histopathological characteristics. It is also rare for such a tumor to express clinically aggressive behavior. However, when metastasis does occur, this disease is often fatal. We herein report an interesting case of a middle-age woman admitted due to pr

A large retroperitoneal malignant solitary fibrous tumor.

We report on a large, retroperitoneal, malignant, solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) with high proliferation activity. A 43-year-old man was admitted to our department complaining of a palpable mass. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a large retroperitoneal tumor occupying the entire abdominal cavity. A laparotomy was performed for diagnosis and treatment, which revealed a tumor in the retroperitoneum but with no invasion to the surrounding organs, thereby allowing safe macroscopic excision. Histologically, the tumor was composed of spindle-shaped cells with patt

Lymphangioma of the small bowel mesentery: a case report and review of the literature.

Lymphangioma is a rare benign condition characterized by proliferation of lymphatic spaces. It is usually found in the head and neck of affected children. Lymphangioma of the small-bowel mesentery is rare, having been reported for less than 1% of all lymphangiomas. Importantly, it can cause fatal complications such as volvulus or involvement of the main branch of the mesenteric arteries, requiring emergency surgery. Moreover, the gross and histopathologic findings may resemble benign multicystic mesothelioma and lymphangiomyoma. Immunohistochemical study for factor VIII-related antigen, D2-40,

Targeting the Molecular and Immunologic Features of Leiomyosarcoma.

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a rare, aggressive mesenchymal tumor with smooth muscle differentiation. LMS is one of the most common histologic subtypes of soft tissue sarcoma; it most frequently occurs in the extremities, retroperitoneum, or uterus. LMS often demonstrates aggressive tumor biology, with a higher risk of developing distant metastatic disease than most sarcoma histologic types. The prognosis is poor, particularly in patients with uterine disease, and there is a need for the development of more effective therapies. Genetically, LMS is karyotypically complex and characterized by a low t
