Facebook as communication support for persons with potential mild acquired cognitive impairment: A content and social network analysis study.

INTRODUCTION: Social media has the potential to increase social participation and support for the well-being of individuals with chronic medical conditions. To date, Facebook is the most popular social medium for different types of communication. However, there is a lack of knowledge about the potential use of Facebook as a means of communication for persons with potential Mild Acquired Cognitive Impairment (MACI), a non-progressive mild cognitive impairment after an acquired brain injury. The aim of this study was to explore how persons with potential MACI, specifically persons with perceived

The science of yawning: Exploring its physiology, evolutionary role, and behavioral impact.

Yawning is a ubiquitous physiological phenomenon observed across various species, including humans. Traditionally associated with boredom or drowsiness, yawning encompasses a complex interplay of neurological, physiological, and social factors. This article delves into the multifaceted nature of yawning, examining its evolutionary significance, neurological underpinnings, and physiological functions. The initiation of yawning is primarily regulated by the hypothalamus and brainstem, with neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin playing critical roles. Anatomically, yawning i

Contributions from popular education in health to structural competency training: An experience from Chile.

Structural competency is used to train health professionals on how social, political, and economic dynamics create conditions that negatively impact a population's health. In the Global South, this approach has historical roots in social movements, popular education, social medicine, and human rights. In 1982, during a time of extreme poverty, inequality, and violence under the Chilean military dictatorship, Educación Popular en Salud (EPES), developed a programme for training community health promoters to address common illnesses and analyse the underlying causes of poor health. In 2010, EPES

The Body Size of Stimulus Conspecifics Affects Social Preference in a Binary Choice Task in Wild-Type, But Not in dyrk1aa Mutant, Zebrafish.

The zebrafish has become an appropriate animal model in the analysis of numerous human brain disorders. A variety of neuropsychiatric conditions and neurodevelopmental disorders are comorbid with abnormal social behavior. Given the translational relevance of zebrafish, multidisciplinary studies employing behavioral, neurobiological, and molecular methods with this species may provide insights into human central nervous system (CNS) disorders. Many of these studies impinge upon our ability to properly induce and quantify the behavior of zebrafish, a relatively understudied aspect of this specie

Psychopathology induced by "speed drugs".

The CNS stimulants produce profound psychopathological conditions in animals and man. The mental and motoric changes in humans make it relevant to retain the amphetamine and cocaine psychoses as possible models for endogenous psychoses, such as certain forms of the schizophrenias and manic-depressive disorders. The following behavioral aberrations in humans were found: (1) motor stereotypies with bizarre movements; repetitive, aimless activities; ("pottering"= "knick-knacking"= "punding") with various objects, including own body; repetition of single words, phrases or musical expressions; ster

Neighborhood socioeconomic position, living arrangements, and cardiometabolic disease among older Puerto Ricans: An examination using PREHCO 2002-2007.

Cardiometabolic diseases are among the leading causes of mortality worldwide and are increasingly prevalent in rapidly aging populations. Neighborhood socioeconomic position (SEP) and living arrangements are increasingly recognized as important determinants of cardiometabolic health but have not been examined within Puerto Rico. This study examined the association between neighborhood SEP, living arrangements, and incidence of cardiometabolic conditions among island-dwelling older Puerto Ricans, using longitudinal data from the Puerto Rican Elderly Health Conditions Project (Waves I 2002/03 an

Sensory systems underlying sociality in the naked mole-rat.

Social interactions rely on the integration of information across multiple sensory modalities. In many species, individuals recognize conspecifics through combinations of auditory, olfactory, tactile, and visual cues, reflecting the capacity of neural systems to integrate diverse streams of sensory input. The naked mole-rat (Heterocephalus glaber) provides a powerful model system for understanding how social living shapes the evolution of such communication systems, particularly under conditions where visual information is largely absent. Naked mole-rats represent a rare example of mammalian e

Self and social identity.

In this chapter, we examine the self and identity by considering the different conditions under which these are affected by the groups to which people belong. From a social identity perspective we argue that group commitment, on the one hand, and features of the social context, on the other hand, are crucial determinants of central identity concerns. We develop a taxonomy of situations to reflect the different concerns and motives that come into play as a result of threats to personal and group identity and degree of commitment to the group. We specify for each cell in this taxonomy how these

Effects of social class differences and social mobility on growth in height, weight and body mass index in a British cohort.

By longitudinally linking follow-up restudies of the National Child Development Study it has been possible to examine not only the well-known association of social class with the size of the child, but also with longitudinal growth, and, in addition the effect of social mobility on growth. The relation of type of occupation of the male head of household to height and weight of the child is seen at all ages (7, 11 and 16) but class influence on growth from 7 years onward is minimal. Social mobility is a significant factor especially in relation to stature but is not significantly related to gro

[Social geriatric examination].

The method of social-geriatric examination is described. This type of examination by an ambulatory team takes place at the patient's home. The examination is firstly directed to the interactions in the human-environmental system. By means of a scheme as an aid the interactions can be analyzed. This analysis, how people are dealing with each other and with need for care and with care, precedes the analysis of the chain of interacting unfavourable conditions of social, mental and physical nature, which are responsible for the disturbance of the balance of the system. This disturbance is signaled

Hiding anxiety versus acknowledgment of anxiety in social interaction: relationship with social anxiety.

According to cognitive and interpersonal models, safety behaviors in social phobia (e.g., avoiding eye contact, hiding blushing) erroneously induce negative evaluation by interaction partners. Presumably, a bias about the social outcome of safety behaviors causes this negative interaction cycle. Such a bias might be subject to double standard in social phobia (i.e., having more stringent rules for oneself than for others). Female students (n=81) predicted more negative social outcomes for a prominent type of safety behavior, hiding anxiety, than for the opposite behavior, acknowledgment of anx

An Exploration of How Functional Neurological Disorder Is Discussed on X (Twitter): Mixed Methods Study Using Social Network and Content Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Functional neurological disorder (FND) is one of the commonest conditions in neurological practice, describing symptoms like paralysis and seizures that can be severe and disabling. It is a diagnosis that is confirmed clinically rather than by scans or laboratory results. It is a stigmatized and widely misperceived condition, and since the emergence of long COVID, there has been some conflation of FND with other conditions, which has caused further misunderstanding. Social media has become increasingly popular for patients to learn and interact about their conditions, and the infor

How Does Social Frailty Evolve Among Patients with Prostate Cancer? Evidence from Regression Models versus Fuzzy Set Qualitative Comparative Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Social frailty is a critical indicator of declining social functioning and affects quality of life in older adults. Prostate cancer patients face greater challenges in social frailty than the general elderly population, due to the physical burden of the disease, treatment-related adverse effects, and psychological stress. However, its multidimensional influencing factors and risk patterns remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: To identify key factors and configurations associated with social frailty in patients with prostate cancer. METHODS: This study was guided by the Health Ecology Model

The Effects of Social Support on Physical Functioning in Older African Americans: Longitudinal Results from the Baltimore Study of Black Aging.

INTRODUCTION: Compared with other racial/ethnic groups, African Americans have higher rates of chronic conditions and suffer a disproportionate burden of disability. We aimed to examine the effects of social support on physical functioning among older African Americans. METHODS: We analyzed a sample of 448 urban, community-dwelling, older African Americans (aged 48-98 years) from the Baltimore Study of Black Aging. Baseline physical functioning was collected between 2006 and 2008 (wave 1), and change in physical functioning was collected between 2009 and 2011 (wave 2), physical functioning wa

Adolescent tickling incorporating handling is associated with reduced stress- and fear-related behaviors in socially isolated male rats.

Social interactions are essential for neuronal development and emotional behavior. In particular, play behavior during adolescence facilitates neural and social development, whereas social isolation is detrimental and increases stress vulnerability in rodents. Furthermore, stress exposure during the juvenile and adolescent periods increases the risk of post-traumatic stress disorder in adulthood. Adolescent male rats emit 50-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations that reflect positive affect induced by rough-and-tumble play or tickling. We previously demonstrated that tickling, which mimics play behavio

Blockade of NMDA receptors reverses the depressant, but not anxiogenic effect of adolescence social isolation in mice.

Early life social isolation stress (SIS), a well-known chronic stress paradigm, is contributed to a number of pathophysiological and neurochemical changes including depression and anxiety. The underlying mechanisms for these disorders in socially isolated animals have not been fully cleared. Previous studies have shown that N-Methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor function is changed by social isolation condition. It is now well recognized that NMDA receptor blockade can exhibit antidepressant and anxiolytic actions. In our study, postnatal day 21-25 mice were randomly housed for 4 weeks under eit

The influence of social indices on oral health and oral health behaviour in a group of Flemish socially deprived adolescents.

AIM: To investigate the impact of social indices on oral health and oral health behaviour in socially deprived adolescents and young adults in Flanders. METHOD: The study design was cross-sectional and included 68 subjects aged 12 to 26, who called for help by "Habbekrats", a non-profit organisation rendering assistance to adolescents and young adults living on the fringes of our society. The clinical oral examination was performed using criteria based on the diagnostic criteria for caries prevalence surveys published by BASCD. Information on parental occupational level, educational level, li

Notably, WM performance did not vary across social versus nonsocial conditions, indicating that increased social complexity did not impair WM and that the relationship is not bidirectional. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a common chronic disease worldwide. The prevalence of T2DM has consistently increased over the past few decades. Factors affecting patient management of diabetes are important in preventing diabetic complications. Social support has been cited as one of the most important aspects of managing chronic conditions. This systematic review aims to consolidate the existing literature discussing the impact of social support on managing type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and T2DM. To begin our review, the Ovid MEDLINE (Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Onl

Social contact during the COVID-19 pandemic: The role of long-term connectedness and cumulative inequality in later life.

Though the COVID-19 crisis put many older adults at sudden risk of social isolation, the pandemic was far from the "great equalizer" some pundits and politicians initially claimed it would be. Drawing from Cumulative Inequality Theory, I consider how long-run patterns of social dis/connectedness contextualize key disparities in social contact that manifested during the pandemic. I incorporate data from four rounds of the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (2005-2021), constructing multiple operationalizations of connectedness accumulation across pre-COVID years and examining sever
