[Schizophrenia diagnostic announcement in a French psychiatric unit].

Announcement of schizophrenia diagnostic to the patients is a topical issue in France. The evolution in clinical practices, a better efficiency in therapeutic procedures and the fundamental right of the patient to obtain information have initialised the discussion of its interest. Spontaneous claim for information from the patient is rarely observed although awareness troubles might be reported at the instauration of the mental disorder or during its evolution. Methodological studies concerning the diagnostic announcement are limited. Except the Bayle studies recently published, only a few pub

Psychological, social and welfare interventions for psychological health and well-being of torture survivors.

BACKGROUND: Torture is widespread, with potentially broad and long-lasting impact across physical, psychological, social and other areas of life. Its complex and diverse effects interact with ethnicity, gender, and refugee experience. Health and welfare agencies offer varied rehabilitation services, from conventional mental health treatment to eclectic or needs-based interventions. This review is needed because relatively little outcome research has been done in this field, and no previous systematic review has been conducted. Resources are scarce, and the challenges of providing services can

How do people with fibromyalgia interpret ambiguous cues in empathy-related healthcare scenarios?

Empathic communication is essential for high-quality healthcare, yet patients must often interpret subtle and ambiguous interpersonal cues during healthcare encounters. In such contexts, prior experiences and cognitive-affective processes may shape interpretations in biased ways. In Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS), a frequently stigmatised and 'invisible' condition, such biases may influence how patients perceive unclear messages from healthcare professionals. While interpretation bias for pain-related information has been explored, bias in interpreting social-emotional information has not. This s

Fertility and HIV following universal access to ART in Rwanda: a cross-sectional analysis of Demographic and Health Survey data.

BACKGROUND: HIV infection is linked to decreased fertility and fertility desires in sub-Saharan Africa due to biological and social factors. We investigate the relationship between HIV infection and fertility or fertility desires in the context of universal access to antiretroviral therapy introduced in 2004 in Rwanda. METHODS: We used data from 3532 and 4527 women aged 20-49 from the 2005 and 2010 Rwandan Demographic and Health Surveys (RDHS), respectively. The RDHSs included blood-tests for HIV, as well as detailed interviews about fertility, demographic and behavioral outcomes. In both yea

Food structure-mediated stomach-brain neural signaling controls gastric emptying.

Obesity and diabetes pose a major threat to public health and brings huge economic and social burdens. Gastrointestinal tract (GIT) plays a crucial role in the occurrence of the metabolic disorder by sending key information to the brain through nervous system to control food intake. Understanding the underlying mechanisms on how the food structure mediates the brain-stomach neutrally regulating digestion process, especially gastric emptying, is thus paramount for precisely designing food structure and for effectively controlling appetite and reducing diet-related disease. This review discusses

Human gnathostomiasis: a neglected food-borne zoonosis.

BACKGROUND: Human gnathostomiasis is a food-borne zoonosis. Its etiological agents are the third-stage larvae of Gnathostoma spp. Human gnathostomiasis is often reported in developing countries, but it is also an emerging disease in developed countries in non-endemic areas. The recent surge in cases of human gnathostomiasis is mainly due to the increasing consumption of raw freshwater fish, amphibians, and reptiles. METHODS: This article reviews the literature on Gnathostoma spp. and the disease that these parasites cause in humans. We review the literature on the life cycle and pathogenesis

Schistosomiasis japonica: modelling as a tool to explore transmission patterns.

Modelling is an important tool for the exploration of Schistosoma japonicum transmission patterns. It provides a general theoretical framework for decision-makers and lends itself specifically to assessing the progress of the national control programme by following the outcome of surveys. The challenge of keeping up with the many changes of social, ecological and environmental factors involved in control activities is greatly facilitated by modelling that can also indicate which activities are critical and which are less important. This review examines the application of modelling tools in the

Stress induces a functional asymmetry in an emotional attention task.

Anxiety is associated with an attentional bias towards angry faces. This effect is most pronounced when the face is presented in the left visual hemifield (LVHF), suggestive of a right hemisphere involvement. Little is known about the modulation of this attentional bias in situations of acute stress. In the current study 38 male participants were randomly allocated to a stress (Trier Social Stress Test; TSST) or a non-stressful control condition. Afterwards they performed an emotional dot-probe paradigm. Stress induced negative affect and a rise in salivary cortisol. Stress caused a pattern of

Risk for rabies importation from North Africa.

A retrospective study conducted in France indicated that a large proportion of patients injured by potentially rabid animals while in North Africa did not seek pretravel advice, and some had not received proper rabies postexposure prophylaxis while in North Africa. As a result, imported human rabies cases are still being reported, and the need for postexposure prophylaxis after exposure in North Africa is not declining. Tourists are generally unaware of the danger of importing potentially rabid animals and of the rules governing the movement of pets. In France, for example, rabid dogs have fre

Asian mothers' risk factors for perinatal death--the same or different? A 10 year review of Leicestershire perinatal deaths.

A case-control study of all perinatal deaths in Leicestershire was established in 1976. By 1985 some 1342 singleton perinatal deaths had occurred. Perinatal mortality among patients of Asian origin was consistently higher than that among European women. Many of the sociomedical risk factors for perinatal death known at booking were common to both population groups. In this population of Asian women, however, low social class was not associated with perinatal risk and illegitimacy hardly ever occurred. In contrast, previous infertility among the Asian women was associated with risk of perinatal

"You can't die here": an exploration of the barriers to dying-in-place for structurally vulnerable populations in an urban centre in British Columbia, Canada.

BACKGROUND: One measure of quality in palliative care involves ensuring people approaching the end of life are able to receive care, and ultimately die, in the places they choose. Canadian palliative care policy directives stem from this tenet of autonomy, acknowledging that most people prefer to die at home, where they feel safe and comfortable. Limited research, however, considers the lack of 'choice' people positioned as structurally vulnerable (e.g., experiencing extreme poverty, homelessness, substance-use/criminalization, etc.) have in regard to places of care and death, with the option

Effectiveness of a digital health intervention on the supportive care needs and quality of life in Mexican patients with breast cancer: a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: In Mexico, unmet supportive care needs are common among women with breast cancer treated in public hospitals, particularly needs regarding health systems and information. This study assessed the effectiveness of a digital patient-reported outcome (ePRO) intervention on these needs and quality of life. METHODS: We conducted a parallel arm, individually randomized clinical trial with 410 Mexican women undergoing chemotherapy at four hospitals of the Mexican Institute of Social Security. Participants were assigned to either an intervention group, which used the “OncoMama” ePRO applica

Parent-Child Communication regarding Sport-Related Concussion: An Application of the Theory of Planned Behavior.

Extant research has discussed the importance of social climates surrounding sport-related concussion (SRC) reporting, especially the need to address parents/guardians' role in concussion management. This study explores parents/guardians' intentions toward SRC-related conversations with their children and their seeking of conversational resources via the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). Data collected from 292 parents/guardians of 1st-12th graders who play contact sports are examined via a structural equation model. The results indicate that parents/guardians' intention toward communicating wi

Testing the effects of segmented crowdsource-selected messages to improve intentions to follow colorectal cancer screening recommendations: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading cause of cancer-related morbidity and mortality in the United States (U.S.). CRC screening (CRCS) is an important method of cancer prevention and early detection, but often receives less public attention than other cancer and screening types. Regular CRCS is recommended for most individuals aged 45–75, though screening rates are lower than desired in the U.S. Despite similar screening rates, Black Americans experience a variety of CRC-related disparities including higher incidence and mortality rates in the United States. Research suggests Black
