Childhood meningiomas associated with meningioangiomatosis: report of five cases and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Suboptimal health is identified as a reversible phase occurring before chronic diseases manifest, emphasizing the significance of early detection and intervention in predictive, preventive, and personalized medicine (PPPM/3PM). While the biological and genetic factors associated with suboptimal health have received considerable attention, the influence of social determinants of health (SDH) remains relatively understudied. By comprehensively understanding the SDH influencing suboptimal health, healthcare providers can tailor interventions to address individual needs, improving heal

COVID-19 Infection and Professional Commitment Among Clinical Nurses: A Cross-Sectional Study of Work Stress and Social Support in Eastern Taiwan.

Background/Objectives: Nurses in Taiwan faced markedly increased nurse-to-patient ratios and a high risk of occupational infection during the COVID-19 pandemic, generating considerable psychological and social strain. Professional commitment-reflecting nurses' identification with, investment in, and intention to remain in the profession-is important for workforce retention and care quality, yet little is known about how contracting COVID-19 affects it. This study examined whether COVID-19 infection and the presence of long COVID symptoms were associated with professional commitment among clini

Associations between Social Determinants of Health and Epilepsy Prevalence in US Adults: NHANES 1999-2018.

BACKGROUND: Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder influenced by multiple social determinants of health (SDoH). However, the joint effects of SDoH and their relative contributions remain unclear. METHODS: We analyzed data from 36,458 participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2018. Epilepsy was defined using specific anticonvulsant medications to improve specificity. Eight SDoH factors were assessed, including family poverty-income ratio, marital status, education, employment, food security, health care access, insurance type, and housing status. Su

Social distribution of internal exposure to environmental pollution in Flemish adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Environmental justice research suggests that inequalities in the distribution of environmental exposure to chemical pollution systematically disadvantage the lower social strata of society. The effects of these inequalities on the human exposure to pollution are however to a large extend unknown. The purpose of this study is to assess social gradients in human biomonitoring results of a representative sample of Flemish adolescents. METHODS: We investigate the associations between individual socioeconomic status (SES), measured by parental educational attainments, and internal body

Social disadvantage during pregnancy: effects on gestational age and birthweight.

OBJECTIVE: Whether psychosocial adversity during pregnancy impacts fetal health outcomes at birth remains underexplored. This is a critical issue given significant social disadvantage and psychosocial stress faced by pregnant women worldwide. STUDY DESIGN: Measures of social disadvantage and psychological factors, and medical/reproductive and nutritional health status in pregnant women were obtained at each trimester. Using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), we investigated the relationship of forms of adversity to each other and to infant gestational age, and birthweight. RESULTS: Among 39

Sensory over-responsivity in elementary school: prevalence and social-emotional correlates.

Sensory over-responsivity (SOR) towards tactile and auditory input can impact children's participation in academic and social activities; however the prevalence of SOR behaviors and their relation to social-emotional problems and competence has not been rigorously studied. This study investigated SOR in a representative sample of elementary school-aged children (n = 925, 50% boys, ages 7-11 years) who were followed from infancy. Sixteen percent of parents reported that at least four tactile or auditory sensations bothered their children. Being bothered by certain sensations was common while ot

Understanding older adults' functioning and health-seeking behaviour during the COVID-19 pandemic in Ghana: A descriptive qualitative study.

Little research has been conducted to explore the functional status of community-dwelling older adults in sub-Saharan Africa, including Ghana, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study investigated the functional status and the health-seeking behaviour of older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic in Ghana. Utilising a descriptive qualitative approach, semi-structured interviews were used to collect data from 12 eligible older adults from southern Ghana. With the use of NVivo (v12), descriptive and focused coding techniques were employed to analyse the data. The following five themes

Linking the psychosocial aetiology and neurobiology of unipolar depression.

Psychosocial factors are an important contributor to the aetiology of unipolar depression. This paper reviews the evidence for the contribution of different psychosocial factors, and provides an overview of the proposed neurobiological mechanisms underlying the link between psychosocial factors and depression. Implicated psychosocial factors fall into three interrelated groups: life events, socioeconomic status, and social support. The life events most strongly linked with depression are bereavement, disability or medical illness, and childhood maltreatment. Others include refugee status, work

Health risk appraisal in older people 1: are older people living alone an "at-risk" group?

BACKGROUND: In the UK, population screening for unmet need has failed to improve the health of older people. Attention is turning to interventions targeted at 'at-risk' groups. Living alone in later life is seen as a potential health risk, and older people living alone are thought to be an at-risk group worthy of further intervention. AIM: To explore the clinical significance of living alone and the epidemiology of lone status as an at-risk category, by investigating associations between lone status and health behaviours, health status, and service use, in non-disabled older people. DESIGN O

Predicting the health-related values and preferences of geriatric patients.

BACKGROUND: Those who must make health care decisions on behalf of persons who lack decision-making capacity often have too little information. The purpose of this study was to determine whether and to what degree sociodemographic factors, social support, religious involvement, and functional status served as predictors of the health-related values and preferences of geriatric patients. METHODS: A retrospective chart review involving 178 cognitively intact patients enrolled at a geriatric clinic at a university medical center was conducted. Patient variables included age, race, sex, marital s

The effects of general and homophobic victimization on adolescents' psychosocial and educational concerns: the importance of intersecting identities and parent support.

Many adolescents experience peer victimization, which often can be homophobic. Applying the minority stress model with attention to intersecting social identities, this study tested the effects of general and homophobic victimization on several educational outcomes through suicidality and school belonging among 15,923 adolescents in Grades 7 through 12 on account of their sexual orientation and race/ethnicity. Parent support also was tested as a moderator of these effects. Homophobic victimization had different effects on suicidality across groups, indicating the importance of considering indi

Patient Experience, Gender, Age, Race, and Social Determinants of Health.

Women are disproportionately affected by disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI), including esophageal, gastroduodenal, bowel, and anorectal conditions, and frequently experience overlapping pain syndromes. This review synthesizes clinical and preclinical evidence on sex- and gender-related differences in DGBI, highlighting alterations in central pain processing, autonomic regulation, stress, microbiota composition, epithelial permeability, motility, genetic and epigenetic factors, and immune responses that may underlie observed disparities. Emerging data indicate that gonadal hormones, inte

Altered neurophysiological processing of social rewards in borderline personality disorder: Insights from a social media paradigm.

Individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) have difficulty forming and maintaining relationships and may turn to social media to compensate for their lack of natural social rewards. However, despite evidence of increased social media use in this population, research has yet to explore how individuals with BPD respond to social media-based rewards at the neurophysiological level. To address this, we recorded EEG from 21 BPD patients and 23 age- and gender-matched healthy controls (HC) as they engaged in a novel paradigm in which they received performance-dependent Likes and positive

Physical, Mental, and Social Characteristics Associated With Happiness in Individuals With Schizophrenia in Japan: A Cross-Sectional Study.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the characteristics associated with happiness in Japanese individuals with schizophrenia. METHODS: A self-reported online survey was conducted in 2022 among individuals aged 20-75 years, including 223 and 1776 individuals with and without schizophrenia, respectively. We used a modified Poisson regression to assess the factors associated with happiness by calculating the age- and sex-adjusted prevalence ratios (PRs). We examined within-schizophrenia group differences by age and sex strata, and compared these stratified PRs between groups with and without schizophrenia. R
