Friends' Experiences of Bereavement Following a Drug-Related Death: A Qualitative Study.

Introduction: Friendship bereavement is under-recognised, and grief following a drug-related death may be compounded by stigma and limited social validation. This study examines how bereaved friends understand and experience grief, focusing on how relational dynamics, social context, and existential concerns shape bereavement. Methods: We undertook a qualitative study embedded in a Norwegian project on drug-related death bereavement. Fourteen bereaved friends (8 men, 6 women; 21-54 years) completed semi-structured interviews. Data were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, de-identified, and a

Designing a Digital Intervention to Increase Human Milk Feeding Among Black Mothers: Qualitative Study of Acceptability and Preferences.

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding rates among US mothers, particularly Black or African American mothers, fall short of recommended guidelines. Despite the benefits of human milk, only 24.9% of all infants receive human milk exclusively at 6 months. OBJECTIVE: Our team previously explored the key content areas a mobile health intervention should address and the usability of an initial prototype of the Knowledge and Usage of Lactation using Education and Advice from Support Network (KULEA-NET), an evidence-based mobile breastfeeding app guided by preferences of Black or African American parents. This

How ESG dimensions shape corporate green innovation: Necessary-condition thresholds, causal asymmetry, and the resource curse.

Whether ESG dimensions shape green innovation through consistent mechanisms remains contested, in part because ESG rating divergence can alter empirical conclusions. Using three independent ESG data sources (Huazheng, CNRDS, Runling Global) and a multi-method design (fixed effects, NCA, fsQCA) covering Chinese listed firms (2015-2023), we document a construct-asymmetry thesis: ESG dimensions do not have uniform roles across rating sources. In the Huazheng sample, Governance (G) and Environmental (E) dimensions are necessary conditions for substantive green innovation (d > 0.28); in two indepen

Exploring fashion designers' acceptance of AIGC: A dual-pathway analysis from the stimulus-organism-response perspective.

Artificial Intelligence Generated Content (AIGC) is increasingly used in creative design. Understanding fashion designers' willingness to adopt these tools has therefore become important for both research and practice. Drawing on the Stimulus-Organism-Response (SOR) model, this study integrates Self-Determination Theory (SDT) with perceived risk, social influence, and facilitating conditions. It examines how these contextual stimuli shape designers' basic psychological need satisfaction and behavioral intention. We analyzed 318 valid responses with complete data for all 21 measurement items fr

When daily activities become digitally curated: a perspective through the model of human occupation.

Dopamine-scrolling characterized by prolonged engagement with algorithmically curated social media content driven by intermittent rewards and personalized recommendations has emerged as a common pattern of digital behavior with potential implications for everyday occupations. Although dopamine-scrolling has been discussed in relation to psychological constructs, its influence on occupational participation has received limited attention. This perspective article draws on broader literature on Social Media Use (SMU) and applies the Model of Human Occupation to conceptualize dopamine-scrolling as

Exploring the Impact of Fatigue and Sleep Disturbance in Hidradenitis Suppurativa: Perspectives from Patients and Healthcare Professionals.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that affects physical, social and emotional aspects of life for people living with HS (plwHS). Although many plwHS consider pain the most bothersome symptom, fatigue and sleep disturbance are underexplored in research and rarely discussed in clinical practice. This article shares perspectives from plwHS and people working with patients, including healthcare professionals (HCPs), from Europe and North America, on the impact of HS-related fatigue and sleep disturbance on quality of life (QoL). Fatigue was described as a debilit

Measuring awareness in people with dementia: protocol for a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: People with dementia (PwD) vary in the degree of awareness they show about their situation, both generally concerning the diagnosis and more specifically around certain aspects or objects of awareness such as awareness of memory impairment, altered daily activities or social functioning. The extent of awareness or lack of awareness has consequences for well-being of PwD and carers, impacting on rates of hospital admission, institutionalization, mood, adjustment to diagnosis, outcomes from intervention and carer burden. An accurate estimation of a person's awareness could therefore

Child sexual abuse in India: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) is a pressing human right issue and public health concern. We conducted a systematic review of quantitative and qualitative studies published in the past decade on CSA in India to examine the distribution of the prevalence estimates for both genders, to improve understanding of the determinants and consequences of CSA and identify gaps in the current state of research. METHODS: For this systematic review, we searched electronic literature databases (PubMed, POPLINE, and PsycINFO) for articles published in English on Child Sexual Abuse in India between Janua

Understanding cough and its management in lung cancer.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article summarizes the current understanding of cough in lung cancer, strategies for its management and highlights areas where further research is warranted.Cough is common, severe and distressing for many lung cancer patients. Currently few effective cough interventions exist for lung cancer patients. This review proposes some of the mechanisms that may underlie cough in lung cancer and presents the existing data on antitussive therapy in cancer patients. A greater focus on the cough mechanisms may enable effective antitussives to be developed in the future for lung ca

A theory-driven candidate annotation architecture for collective regulation under stress in human-centered computational psychiatry: early modern Iberia as a worked coding demonstration.

Computational psychiatry has advanced formal accounts of individual prediction, affect regulation, and maladaptive rigidity, but it still has fewer clinically interpretable tools for representing social and institutional processes under collective stress. This Hypothesis and Theory article proposes a theory-driven candidate annotation architecture for this purpose. It defines five collective-process variables-defensive closure (DEF-C), collective anxiety load (ANX-C), integrative progression (PRO-C), punitive superegoic regulation (SUP-C), and moral frame rigidity (FRAME-C)-as theory-guided in

Medical students' evaluation of digital problem-based learning: a mixed-methods systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Digital Problem-Based Learning (DPBL) is becoming more frequently used to facilitate the development of knowledge and skills in medical education, yet student satisfaction and engagement with DPBL remain insufficiently understood. METHODS: This mixed-methods systematic review aimed to examine how medical students perceive and experience DPBL. We searched four databases (Feb 5-Jun 30, 2024) following JBI and PRISMA guidelines, yielding 3459 abstracts and 56 included studies. Studies published at any time and in any language were considered. Two researchers independently conducted s

Accountability for maternal and newborn health: Why measuring and monitoring broader social, political, and health system determinants matters.

This article offers four key lessons learned from a set of seven studies undertaken as part of the collection entitled, "Improving Maternal Health Measurement to Support Efforts toward Ending Preventable Maternal Mortality". These papers were aimed at validating ten of the Ending Preventable Maternal Mortality initiative indicators that capture information on distal causes of maternal mortality. These ten indicators were selected through an inclusive consultative process, and the research designs adhere to global recommendations on conducting indicator validation studies. The findings of these

Concerns that an opioid antidote could "make things worse": Profiles of risk compensation beliefs using the Naloxone-Related Risk Compensation Beliefs (NaRRC-B) scale.

Background and aims: As opioid overdose death rates reach epidemic proportions in the United States, the widespread distribution of naloxone is imperative to save lives. However, concerns that people who use drugs will engage in riskier drug behaviors if they have access to naloxone remain prevalent, and the measurement scales to assess these risk compensation concerns remain under researched. This study aims to examine the validity of the Naloxone-Related Risk Compensation Beliefs (NaRRC-B) scale and to understand the effect of overdose education and naloxone distribution (OEND) training on r

German Version of the Child Sexual Abuse Myth Scale (CSAMS-G): Translation, Expansion, and Construct Validation.

Research is needed on the myths regarding child sexual abuse in order to address commonly held misconceptions in persons training for professional careers in relevant fields for child protection. We present our translated, validated, and expanded Child Sexual Abuse Myth Scale (CSAMS-G). It was tested on a sample of 569 students studying either education, social work, law, or policing. Results of confirmatory factor analysis revealed a good model fit for our assumed factorial structure. Acceptable results on internal consistency were confirmed with McDonald's ω. We also present the first result

Feasibility and Efficacy of Online Neuropsychological Assessment.

Neuropsychological testing has intrinsic challenges, including the recruitment of patients and their participation in research projects. To create a method capable of collecting multiple datapoints (across domains and participants) while imposing low demands on the patients, we have developed PONT (Protocol for Online Neuropsychological Testing). Using this platform, we recruited neurotypical controls, individuals with Parkinson's disease, and individuals with cerebellar ataxia and tested their cognitive status, motor symptoms, emotional well-being, social support, and personality traits. An enriched teaching program for reducing resistance and indices of unhappiness among individuals with profound multiple disabilities.

We evaluated an enriched teaching program for reducing resistance and indices of unhappiness displayed by 3 individuals with profound multiple disabilities during teaching sessions. The program involved presentation of preferred activities before, during, and after each teaching session, discontinuation of identified nonpreferred activities, and a brief break and preferred activity following occurrence of resistance. Implementation of the enriched teaching program was accompanied by reductions in resistance and indices of unhappiness for each participant. Results also indicated no negative imp

Drug use and the role of homelessness in the process of marginalization.

The marginalization theory of life histories implies that drug users who are considered as marginalized manifest more serious social, economical, physical, and psychological problems than nonmarginalized drug users. The degree of marginalization is assumed to be an indicator of homelessness. The theory argues that homelessness is a stage in the life of a user that is associated with the loss of control of use. In this paper the effects of the dimensions of marginalization on homelessness are reported. The marginalization theory emerged from ethnographic fieldwork research among the drug users

Comparison of logistic and Bayesian classifiers for evaluating the risk of femoral neck fracture in osteoporotic patients.

Femoral neck fracture prediction is an important social and economic issue. The research compares two statistical methods for the classification of patients at risk for femoral neck fracture: multiple logistic regression and Bayes linear classifier. The two approaches are evaluated for their ability to separate femoral neck fractured patients from osteoporotic controls. In total, 272 Italian women are studied. Densitometric and geometric measurements are obtained from the proximal femur by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. The performances of the two methods are evaluated by accuracy in the cl

Identifying understudied correlations between autism & phenotypic attributes in a large family dataset.

BACKGROUND: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a neurodevelopmental condition marked by restricted, repetitive behaviors and social communication difficulties, is one of the fastest-growing pediatric behavioral health concerns in the United States. Long-term outcomes significantly improve with early intervention, but diagnosis and treatment are complicated by the large range of phenotypic presentations that can be moderated by identity factors like gender and culture. Many physical and behavioral characteristics associated with the autism phenotype are not included in the screening and diagnostic

From charm to conflict: Simulating narcissistic interpersonal dynamics with agent-based modeling.

Narcissism is a dynamic, normally distributed trait ranging from nonpathological to pathological expressions, with narcissistic personality disorder representing its extreme. Its complex interpersonal dynamics and paradoxical social outcomes underscore the need of uncovering its underlying mechanisms. However, experimental investigations face methodological constraints, making simulation-such as agent-based modeling (ABM)-a valuable alternative for controlled, theory-driven exploration. This study pursued three aims: (1) formalizing existing theories of narcissism into a computational framewor
