BACKGROUND: Modern psychiatry focuses on self-stigma, coping strategies, and quality of life (QoL). This study looked at relationships among severity of symptoms, self-stigma, demographics, coping strategies, and QoL in patients with neurotic spectrum disorders.
METHODS: A total of 153 clinically stable participants who met criteria for generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia, panic disorder, agoraphobia, mixed anxiety-depressive disorder, adjustment disorders, somatoform disorders, or obsessive-compulsive disorder were included in a cross-sectional study. Psychiatrists examined patients …

All medical specialities are interested in the clinical aspects of psychological trauma. Due to psychopathological determinants which structure the trauma, although pathognomonic of posttraumatic stress disorder, flashbacks are rarely highlighted by the psychotraumatised patient in their contact with the health care system. Contact with the medical profession is expressed by somatic symptoms or psychiatric comorbidities. Addictive and suicidal problems, as well as somatisations and physical pain, are more traditional methods of contact with the health care system. In relation to the evolution

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to assess personality disorder (PD) comorbidity in somatization disorder (SD) patients compared with psychiatric controls in a Spanish sample.
METHODS: This is a case-control study. Selection of 70 consecutive SD patients was made, and an age-, sex-, and ethnic-group-matched control group of 70 mood and/or anxiety disorder patients recruited in psychiatric outpatient clinics was selected. PDs were measured using the International Personality Disorder Examination, and Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition Axis I morbidity was

BACKGROUND: The present study examined whether somatic symptoms found in annual health examinations, could be predictive of major depression in the ensuing year.
METHOD: Subjects analyzed were 1027 non-major-depressive workers (706 men, mean age 35) attending annual health examinations at a research institute. All were Japanese and found not to be suffering from major depression when interviewed, according to the semi-structured interviews of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV). This article reports on evidence for the validity of major depression (MDD) with atypical features (defined as overeating and oversleeping) as a distinct subtype based on cross-sectional and 1-year prospective data from the Epidemiologic Catchment Area study. MDD with atypical features, when compared to MDD without atypical features, was associated with a younger age of onset, more psychomotor slowing, and more comorbid panic disorder, drug abuse or dependence, and somatization disorder. These differences could not be explained by differences in demographic characteristics or by symptom severi

In order to investigate the possible relationship of hyperprolactinemia to psychological distress in patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis, 19 uremic women were evaluated by a semistructured interview and administered the Kellner Symptom Questionnaire. Group A (10 uremic women with hyperprolactinemia) did not differ significantly in anxiety, depression, somatization and hostility from group B (9 normoprolactinemic uremic women). Both groups rated themselves more depressed and hostile than a normal control group of 10 women, and hyperprolactinemic patients were also significantly more anxiou

UNLABELLED: Cambodians experienced genocide from 1975 to 1979 and ensuing civil war until 1993.
PURPOSE: Are Khmer with a history of trauma who present to a general medical clinic with unexplained physical symptoms more likely than the general population to harbor psychiatric symptoms?
METHODS: Subjects were drawn from a Phnom Penh clinic and the surrounding neighborhood. All subjects completed the Stressful Life Events Screening Questionnaire (SLESQ) and the PRIMEMD. Clinic patients with unexplained physical complaints were compared with neighborhood nonpatients. All individuals reporting t

OBJECTIVES: The main objective of the manuscript is to present a review of the literature of the psychiatric epidemiological studies carried out in Puerto Rico in the last decade.
BACKGROUND: Data from three major epidemiological surveys carried out in the last decade is presented which provide evidence against prior long standing observations that Puerto Ricans reported higher levels of psychiatric symptomatology as compared to other populations and ethnic groups in the United States.
METHODS: The studies selected for review were the universe of population epidemiological studies carried ou

The co-occurrence of psychiatric and cardiac disease in many patients exemplifies the complexity of psychosomatic medicine, with both psychosomatic and somatopsychic effects. Psychological factors including depression, anxiety, and hostility influence the development, clinical expression, and prognosis of coronary heart disease. Depression and anxiety are especially common problems complicating cardiac disease. The physician must approach the patient with an appreciation of the confounding aspects of diagnosis and a readiness to think flexibly about the nature of the problems encountered. SSRI

BACKGROUND: Functional somatic disorders (FSD), characterised by persistent physical symptoms and associated impairment, remain diagnostically fragmented across medical specialties, contributing to inconsistent patient care. The FSD classification addresses this by classifying symptom presentations into multi-system, single-system, and single-symptom subcategories, yet its utility in clinical populations is largely unexamined. This study evaluated the applicability and clinical utility of FSD classification in patients with Somatic Symptom Disorder (SSD).
METHODS: Observational, cross-section

BACKGROUND: Factor analyses have indicated that somatic symptom burden can be separated into local symptom domain factors (e.g., cardiopulmonary, fatigue, gastrointestinal, pain) and a general propensity toward being symptomatic. This study aimed to determine what specific physical symptoms, and correlates, that are most strongly associated with this general factor.
METHOD: A systematic review was based on factor analyses of the Patient Health Questionnaire 15 (PHQ-15) and Somatic Symptom Scale 8 (SSS-8).
RESULTS: There was heterogeneity in the included studies, in terms of the exact specifi

BACKGROUND: There is little published work describing the electrophysiological characteristics of essential palatal tremor, a condition now believed by many to be a functional (psychogenic) movement disorder.
CASE REPORT: Here we combine electroencephalography and electromyography with time-locked video recordings to document two cases of essential palatal tremor in which a definitive diagnosis is achieved using these electrophysiological tools.
DISCUSSION: We believe that sharing how these objective tools can be used to diagnose a functional movement disorder, as well as providing more publ

The term "brief resolved unexplained event" was created to replace "apparent life-threatening event," narrowing the definition and providing evidence-based guidelines for management. The emphasis is placed on using clinical clues to classify patients as low risk or exclude them from the categorization altogether. Infants who meet low-risk classification can be briefly observed in the emergency department and be discharged home. Infants who demonstrate elements suggestive of a specific etiology should be evaluated and treated accordingly. Patients who demonstrate no specific findings yet who ar

"Medically unexplained symptoms" (MUS) are commonly seen in all clinical specialties. The preliminary investigations in China show a prevalence of MUS in 4.15%-18.2% of clinical patients. Based on international and national guidelines and the most advanced studies, a Chinese expert consensus on clinical practice of MUS is reached through three rounds of discussion seminars by 25 experts from various specialties including psychiatry, internal medicine, surgery, gynecology-obstetrics, otorhinolar-yngology and traditional Chinese medicine. Clinical doctors should be alert of patients whose discom

BACKGROUND: Evidence of brain structural and functional alterations have been implicated in patients with somatization disorder (SD). However, little is known about brain functional connectivity in SD. In the present study, resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and graph theory were used to obtain a comprehensive view of whole-brain functional connectivity and to investigate the changes of voxel-wise functional networks in patients with SD.
METHODS: Twenty-five first-episode, medication-naive patients with SD and 28 age-, sex- and education-matched healthy controls (HCs)
