Novel lipophilic platinum(II) complexes (LSPt-1-3), containing 3,5-diisopropylsalicylate (DIPS) as a leaving group and 2NH(3) or 1R,2R-diaminocyclohexane or (4R,5R)-4,5-bis(aminomethyl)-2-isopropyl-1,3-dioxolane as the carrier, have been synthesized, characterized and evaluated in vitro and in vivo. A new triterpenoid, 2alpha,3alpha,24-trihydroxyurs-12-en-28-oic acid-28-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl ester (4) along with four known triterpenoids, ursolic acid (1), 2alpha-hydroxyursolic acid (2), 2alpha,3alpha,24-trihydroxyurs-12-en-28-oic acid (3), and 2alpha,3alpha,19alpha,24-tetrahydroxyurs-12-en-28-oic acid-28-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl ester (5), were isolated from the leaves of Prunus serrulata var. spontanea (Rosaceae). Part of the northern Palatinate region in Germany is characterized by elevated levels of arsenic and antimony in the soil due to the presence of ore sources and former mining activities. The total mercury (Hg) and selenium (Se) concentrations were determined in kidney cortex samples of 195 deceased, non-occupationally burdened individuals. Mercury was determined by means of Cold-vapour Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (CV-AAS) and selenium by Graphite-Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (GF-AAS). Increased mortality due to various malignancies is reported from long-term exposed, non-ferrous smelter workers. In the present study the post-mortem distribution of cadmium, lead and zinc in lung, liver and kidney is reported and related to exposure and mortality. Serum gastrin concentrations and gastric acid secretion were measured in nine antrectomized subjects during infusion of saline and calcium gluconate. The basal gastrin level was of the same magnitude as in normal individuals and unoperated duodenal ulcer patients. Calcium infusion only induced gastrin release in one patient and did not induce acid secretion in any of the patients.
