Physiological responses during a maximal dry static breath-hold in a world champion freediver.

Few studies have described physiological and cardiac rhythm responses to maximal voluntary breath-holding in elite freedivers. This case study presents minute ventilation, PETO2, PETCO2, involuntary breathing movements (IBMs; surface electromyography), SpO2, muscle and cerebral oxygenation (near-infrared spectroscopy), and cardiac rhythm changes (electrocardiogram) before, during, and after a maximal dry static voluntary breath-hold in a world champion freediver. Glossopharyngeal insufflation prior to the breath-hold increased forced vital capacity from 6.92 L (138% predicted) to 9.04 L (180%

Uncontrolled Orthostatic Hypotension and Multi-channel Cerebral Hemodynamic Changes in a Young Male Participant: A Case Report.

We aimed to determine the changes in mean arterial pressure (MAP) due to uncontrolled orthostatic hypotension and the oxygenated hemoglobin(O₂Hb), deoxygenated hemoglobin (HHb), and total hemoglobin (THb) changes in a young male participant. The participant (23 y.o. male, no medication) stood in a quiet room before the main experiment. Changes in O2Hb, HHb, and THb levels were detected using NIRS optodes comprising 12 light sources and 12 detectors, providing 24-channel simultaneous recording. A 30-mm inter-optode distance was set for measuring cortical tissue hemodynamics. The Cz position of

Paradigms and methods of noninvasive brain-computer interfaces in motor or communication assistance and rehabilitation: a systematic review.

Noninvasive brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have rapidly developed over the past decade. This new technology utilizes magneto-electrical recording or hemodynamic imaging approaches to acquire neurophysiological signals noninvasively, such as electroencephalography (EEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). These noninvasive signals have different temporal resolutions ranging from milliseconds to seconds and various spatial resolutions ranging from centimeters to millimeters. Thanks to these neuroimaging technologies, various BCI modalities like steady-state visual evoked potenti

NIR-HSI for the non-destructive monitoring of in-bag hazelnut oxidation.

This study explores the application of Near-Infrared Hyperspectral Imaging (NIR-HSI) as a non-destructive method for monitoring the oxidation of hazelnuts (Corylus avellana) stored under different atmospheric conditions (air, nitrogen, and vacuum) and light exposures, directly inside plastic bags, without the need for packaging removal nor sample preparation. Hazelnuts were imaged over a 78-day storage period, and data were analysed using ANOVA-Simultaneous Component Analysis (ASCA) to quantify the effects of time, atmosphere, and light on oxidation. Individual hazelnuts within each bag were s

Spectroscopic and Pulse Radiolysis Studies of Water-Ethanolic Solutions of Albumins: Insight into Serum Albumin Aggregation.

Albumin-based nanoparticles are promising drug delivery systems due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and ability to improve targeted drug release. Among various preparation methods, radiation-induced cross-linking in the presence of ethanol has been proposed in the literature as an effective method for producing protein nanoparticles with preserved bioactivity and controlled size. However, the mechanisms by which ethanol radicals contribute to protein aggregation remain insufficiently understood. In this study, we investigate the role of ethanol in the aggregation of albumins to de

Determination of Hemodynamic Response Using fNIRS in Lower Extremity Amputee and Replant Patients.

This study investigates cortical reorganisation and hemodynamic responses in individuals with lower extremity amputation and replantation using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). A total of 15 healthy controls, four left lower limb amputees and one replantation patient were included. Oxyhemoglobin (oxy-Hb) activations were measured during 10 unilateral lower limb motor tasks (toe, ankle, knee and hip movements). Non-parametric analyses revealed significant differences in cortical activation between amputees and controls, particularly during knee flexion and extension. Three-dimensi

Pathlength effects on NIR Transflectance performance for polar and apolar liquid food analysis.

Near-infrared (NIR) transflectance spectroscopy is widely used across various applications, including food analysis, yet the effect of accessory pathlength on spectral quality and subsequent chemometric performance has not been systematically assessed. This study evaluates how pathlengths (1, 2, 4, and 6 mm) influence spectral characteristics and partial least squares regression (PLSR) accuracy in two contrasting liquid food systems: an apolar matrix-tree-picked olive oil (TPOO) adulterated with ground-picked olive oil (GPOO)-and a polar matrix-vodka spiked with methanol. Spectra were acquired

Near-infrared II cyanine fluorophores with large stokes shift engineered by regulating respective absorption and emission.

Fluorescence bioimaging in the near-infrared II window is a promising area due to its deep tissue penetration and high contrast. However, efficient design strategies for near-infrared II fluorophores with large Stokes shifts are still scarce. Here, we develop a series of near-infrared II fluorophores (termed VIPIs) with large Stokes shifts (167-260 nm in chloroform) by conjugating p-aminostyryl to hemicyanines. Time dependent density functional theory calculation and transient absorption spectra reveal that the excitation process is predominantly localized within the cyanine moiety, whereas th

Renal-clearable organic NIR-II dye cluster for non-invasive ureteral imaging.

Intraoperative ureter visualization is essential in colorectal cancer (CRC) surgery, but current modalities are limited by invasiveness, poor photostability, and insufficient spatial resolution. Second near-infrared (NIR-II) fluorescence imaging provides a non-invasive approach with improved tissue penetration and spatial resolution. By modulating the aggregation behavior of NIR-II dyes, intravenous administration followed by renal metabolism enables real-time, high-resolution ureteral visualization. In this study, we prepared a series of donor-acceptor-donor-based NIR-II probes through a one-

Exploring cortical activation patterns during linear vs. curvilinear walking in people with multiple sclerosis using a walking aid.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease of the central nervous system characterized by inflammation, demyelination, axon loss and gliosis. Mobility impairment is one of the key clinical symptoms of MS, and a decline in walking abilities can significantly affect quality of life in people with MS (PwMS). As the disease progresses, these symptoms typically worsen, requiring the support of walking aid during gait. Here, we aimed to identify the cortical activation patterns associated with walking in PwMS using walking aids, by means of functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS). Also, sinc

A Small-Molecule NIR-II Probe for the Diagnosis of Hemorrhagic Diseases.

Numerous hemorrhagic disorders, particularly those presenting deep hemorrhage, pose diagnostic challenges, often leading to delayed treatment and severe outcomes. Near-infrared (NIR)-II fluorescence imaging offers advantages such as deep tissue penetration, real-time visualization, and a high signal-to-background ratio, making it highly suitable for diagnosing hemorrhagic diseases. In this study, an NIR-II fluorescent probe LJ-2P carrying carboxylic and phosphoric acid groups is successfully applied for imaging hemorrhagic diseases. LJ-2P demonstrates a strong affinity for fibrinogen and fibri

Fe3+-activated magnetoplumbite persistent luminescence phosphor by modulating the oxygen vacancy.

Broadband near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy has gained significant attention due to its versatile application in various fields. In the realm of NIR phosphors, Fe3+ ion is an excellent activator known for its nontoxic and harmless nature. In this study, we prepared an Fe3+-activated SrGa12O19 (SGO) NIR phosphor and analyzed its phase and luminescence properties. Upon excitation at 326 nm, the SGO:Fe3+ phosphor exhibited a broadband emission in the range 700-1000 nm, peaking at 816 nm. The optical band gap of SGO:Fe3+ was evaluated. To enhance the long-lasting phosphorescence, an oxygen vacancy-

Rapidly responsive and highly selective NIR fluorescent probe for detecting hydrogen sulfide in food samples and living cells.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a pungent gas that is one of the key mediators of signal transduction in biological systems, and its presence is related to the freshness of some protein foods. Using phenothiazine derivatives as fluorophores and 2, 4-dinitrobenzene sulfonate (DNBS) fragments as reaction groups, a near-infrared (NIR) probe WX-HS for H2S identification was designed. With the addition of H2S, WX-HS appeared a strong fluorescence signal at 660 nm with short reaction time (90 s) and high sensitivity, and fluorescence state change from non-fluorescent to orange-red. In addition, WX-HS coul

Faster Walking Speeds Require Greater Activity from the Primary Motor Cortex in Older Adults Compared to Younger Adults.

Gait speed declines with age and slower walking speeds are associated with poor health outcomes. Understanding why we do not walk faster as we age, despite being able to, has implications for rehabilitation. Changes in regional oxygenated haemoglobin (HbO2) across the frontal lobe were monitored using functional near infrared spectroscopy in 17 young and 18 older adults while they walked on a treadmill for 5 min, alternating between 30 s of walking at a preferred and fast (120% preferred) speed. Gait was quantified using a triaxial accelerometer (lower back). Differences between task (preferre

Spatial-Temporal Oxygenation Mapping Using a Near-Infrared Optical Scanner: Towards Peripheral Vascular Imaging.

Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS)-based peripheral perfusion, or microcirculation, can be used to assess the severity of peripheral vascular dysfunction. A low-cost, portable non-contact near-infrared optical scanner (NIROS) was developed for spatio-temporal mapping of tissue oxygenation and perfusion in tissues. In vivo validation studies were carried out on control subjects (n = 3) to assess the ability of NIROS to measure real-time oxygenation changes in response to an occlusion paradigm on the dorsum of the hand. NIROS captured real-time tissue oxygenation changes with 95% correlation when

The presence of adjacent others facilitates interpersonal neural synchronization in the left prefrontal cortex during a simple addition task.

The hyperscanning technique, that is, simultaneous measurement of neural signals in more than one person, is a powerful research tool for understanding humans' social interactions. In recent years, many studies have investigated interpersonal neural synchronization during various types of communication processes. However, there has been little focus on the impact of the presence of others without explicit social interaction, despite the mere presence of others having been suggested as influencing behavior. In this study, we clarify whether neural signals during a self-paced, repeated, addition

Cerebral hemoglobin oxygenation in children with congenital heart disease.

BACKGROUND: It is important to identify the pathological characteristics of cerebral circulation and oxygen metabolism at the bedside in children with congenital heart disease (CHD) to prevent neurodevelopmental impairments. The brain regional oxygen saturation index (rSO2 ) can be easily obtained at the bedside with near-infrared spectroscopy and has been widely used in the management of children with CHD in recent years. METHODS: To determine if the rSO2 before or after CHD surgery is a good predictor of cerebral oxygen metabolism, we investigated the impact of different clinical variables
