Safety and effectiveness of the Bonebridge transcutaneous active direct-drive bone-conduction hearing implant at 1-year device use.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a new transcutaneous bone-conduction implant (BCI BB) in patients with conductive and mixed hearing loss or with single-sided deafness (SSD), 1 year after surgical implantation. The study design is multicentric prospective, intra-subject measurements. Each subject is his/her own control. The setting is nine university hospitals: 7 French and 2 Belgian. Sixteen subjects with conductive or mixed hearing loss with bone-conduction hearing thresholds under the upper limit of 45 dB HL for each frequency from 500 to 4000 Hz, and 12

Cochlear implantations in young children with cochlear nerve deficiency diagnosed by MRI.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate postoperative outcomes after cochlear implantation in young children with cochlear nerve deficiency and compare th … dy group produced categories of auditory performance scores not less than 4 except for one patient. Speech intelligibility rating scores in the control group gradually increased after cochlear implantation, but for the study group, the score remained zero 12 months after the implantation. In open-set one-syllable tests, five patients with cochlear nerve deficiency showe …

Sources and effects of low-frequency noise.

The sources of human exposure to low-frequency noise and its effects are reviewed. Low-frequency noise is common as background noise in urba … und-pressure level; annoyance is exacerbated by rattle or vibration induced by low-frequency noise; speech intelligibility may be reduced more by low-frequency noise than other noises except those in the frequency range of speech itself, because of the upward spread of masking. On the other hand, it is also possible that low-frequency noise provides some protection agai …

Long-term follow-up after division of a pharyngeal flap for severe nasal obstruction.

Between 1965 and 1986, nine patients were noticed to have significant nasal airway obstruction following surgery for velopharyngeal incompetence (VPI). All had a superiorly based pharyngeal flap. Division of the flap was recommended to correct the posterior obstruction. A complete section of the flap was done in seven cases and lateral port enlargement was done in the remaining two. The interval between flap elevation and transection ranged from 5 months to 5 years. Three patients required more than one operation to fully correct the obstruction. All the patients were evaluated 2 to 14 years l

The hearing-impaired child in the hearing society.

This paper sets out to describe a method of educating the hearing-impaired which has been operating successfully for the past 18 years. The underlying tenet of our approach is that considerable communicative skills can be developed with children who have marked hearing loss. Even if the child is profoundly deaf he or she has some sensory input which can be used as the basis for training in language development. The attempt to make the most of the minimal hearing of the hearing-impaired child has proved to be successful in the vast majority of cases. The profoundly hearing-impaired child can le

Does the speaker's voice quality influence children's performance on a language comprehension test?

PURPOSE: A small number of studies have explored children's perception of speakers' voice quality and its possible influence on language comprehension. The aim of this explorative study was to investigate the relationship between the examiner's voice quality, the child's performance on a digital version of a language comprehension test, the Test for Reception of Grammar (TROG-2), and two measures of cognitive functioning. METHOD: The participants were (n = 86) mainstreamed 8-year old children with typical language development. Two groups of children (n = 41/45) were presented with the TROG-2

Study on the characteristics analysis and recognition method of vowels in patients with type Ⅱ diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) can induce impairments in vocal fold function and neural control, resulting in systematic changes in vowel articulation that may serve as objective biomarkers for speech-based disease detection. Traditional sentence-level approaches are susceptible to linguistic variability, limiting their ability to extract disease-specific acoustic features and reducing overall robustness. This study presents a vowel-based intelligent recognition framework for T2DM (VDT2) designed to capture stable and discriminative pathological speech features. The framework combines Lasso r

Long term outcome of cochlear implantation in five children with common cavity deformity.

INTRODUCTION: A common cavity (CC) deformity is a deformed inner ear in which the cochlea and vestibule are confluent forming a common rudimentary cystic cavity. The outcome of cochlear implantation (CI) in this deformity is not expected as good as in other cochlear deformity. Categories of Auditory Performance (CAP) score, Speech Intelligibility Rating (SIR) scale, Meaningful Auditory-Integration Scale (MAIS) and Meaningful Use of Speech Scale (MUSS) are scales designed to assess benefit of functional device (hearing aid, Cochlear implant, ABI) in young children. The aim of the study was to o…

Recovery of speech following total glossectomy: an acoustic and perceptual appraisal.

This study involved an acoustic and perceptual analysis of the speech produced by a 31-year-old female following total glossectomy. Speech samples were collected on three occasions within the first 3 months following glossectomy. Vowel articulation was examined acoustically as a function of vowel space and the Euclidean distance separating corner vowels. Perceptual analyses involved presentation of the participant's CV productions to 30 healthy adult listeners who made forced-choice identifications of consonant type. Acoustic analysis revealed improvements in vowel space area and an increase i

Caregiver perception of speech quality in patients with ankyloglossia: Comparison between surgery and non-treatment.

OBJECTIVES: Our objective was to determine if there are differences in caregiver perception of speech for patients that undergo frenulectomy compared to patients that were not surgically treated. INTRODUCTION: Ankyloglossia is a controversial topic without standardized treatment guidelines. Although there have been several studies suggesting that breastfeeding does improve after frenulectomy, there is a paucity of literature that investigates the relationship between ankyloglossia and speech. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted to identify patients with ankyloglossia. Patient

Voicing status of word final plosives in Friedreich's Ataxia dysarthria.

In a previous study, the authors identified final plosive voicing contrast as the highest single error source in dysarthria associated with Friedreich's Ataxia in a group of Irish English-speaking participants. This study aimed to determine the acoustic features underlying misperceptions of voicing status and implications for clinical management. Words with final plosives were extracted from recordings of ten speakers with Friedreich's Ataxia. Various measures of the syllable rhyme were compared with intelligibility scores. Vowel duration, voicing in the closure, F1 frequency at mid-vowel and

The effect of fast speech rate on stuttering frequency during delayed auditory feedback.

UNLABELLED: Delayed auditory feedback (DAF) has been documented to improve fluency in those who stutter. The increased fluency has been attributed to the slowed speech rate induced by DAF, but recent experiments have suggested that increasing the speech rate may also decrease stuttering under DAF. This investigation described the effect of combining a fast speech rate and DAF on the fluency of four people who stutter. Fluency of the two mildly dysfluent subjects was the same for both no DAF and DAF conditions at normal and at fast oral reading rates. In contrast, the two severely dysfluent sub

Computerised measurement of fundamental frequency in Scottish neoglottal patients.

An electrolaryngograph has been used to investigate the fundamental frequency of neoglottal speech produced by patients who have undergone near-total (parsimonious) laryngectomy. The resulting estimates of fundamental frequency were compared with the fundamental frequency of normal and oesophageal speakers of a similar age and Scottish dialect. It was found that the average fundamental frequencies of neoglottal and oesophageal male speakers were higher than those in the normal group, though many fall into the normal range. The fundamental frequency of the single neoglottal female speaker was h

The Biaxial Double-Barrel Fibula Flap-A Simplified Technique for Fibula Maxillary Reconstruction.

PURPOSE: Previously described techniques for microvascular fibula reconstruction of Brown Class II to IV maxillectomy defects are complex, require multiple osteotomies, result in a short pedicle, and inadequately reconstruct the dental alveolus in preparation for endosseous implants. This report describes a simplified technique for Brown Class II to IV defects that re-creates facial support, allows for dental reconstruction with appropriately positioned implants, and maintains adequate pedicle length. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed of all patients with Brown

Speech therapy for errors secondary to cleft palate and velopharyngeal dysfunction.

Individuals with a history of cleft lip/palate or velopharyngeal dysfunction may demonstrate any combination of speech sound errors, hypernasality, and nasal emission. Speech sound distortion can also occur due to other structural anomalies, including malocclusion. Whenever there are structural anomalies, speech can be affected by obligatory distortions or compensatory errors. Obligatory distortions (including hypernasality due to velopharyngeal insufficiency) are caused by abnormal structure and not by abnormal function. Therefore, surgery or other forms of physical management are needed for
