Considerable confusion exists in the literature regarding hair casts. A variety of different disorders have been grouped and reported as if they were a single entity. This nonspecificity in terminology accounts for the vast discrepancy in their reported incidence, size, configuration, etc. A specific classification for hair casts is proposed to clarify the situation. This article presents a practical staining technic, which readily differentiates peripilar keratin casts from other hair disorders. A 72-year-old female operated for ascending colon cancer was histologically diagnosed as having co-existing goblet cell-like carcinoid and rosette-forming carcinoid. The tumor cells were positive for the argyrophil reaction, but negative for the argentaffin reaction. A few tumor cells had both argyrophil granules and sulfated acid mucin in their cytoplasm. Despite combination chemotherapy she expired 10 months after the operation. Autopsy revealed local recurrence and metastases to the liver, lung, pancreas, left adrenal and many lymph nodes.

The intracerebral microcirculation of the isocortex was studied in unanesthetized rats under hemorrhagic shock. Histological and ultrastructural studies of the juxtaglomerular apparatus (JGA) were performed on renal biopsy material from three cases of Bartter's syndrome and two cases of renal artery stenosis. Nemaline myopathy was first reported in 1963 and has been considered to be a congenital, non-progressive myopathy with weakness since birth. However, severe forms leading to death in infancy have been rarely reported. Recently we necropsied a female infant with fatal neonatal nemaline myopathy who required mechanical ventilatory support immediately following delivery. She had suffered from recurrent pneumonia and died at five months of age. Light and electron microscopic studies on both muscle biopsy and autopsy specimens were diagnostic of nemaline myopathy. Iontophoretic injection of horseradish peroxidase into severed olfactory nerve fascicles has been used to stain salamander olfactory receptor cell somata, their associated nerves, and their axonal terminations in the glomerular layer of the olfactory bulb. For direct observation of microaerophilic actinomycetes by fluorescent antibody, a procedure was developed in which pepsin treatment and rhodamine conjugate of normal serum were used to reduce nonspecific staining in cervicovaginal smears. Actinomyces israelii, Actinomyces naeslundii, and Arachnia propionica were observed in cervicovaginal smears from women who did use and who did not use an intrauterine contraceptive device. Vaginal exudates from 105 patients were examined by direct wet-mount microscopy and acridine orange stain for the presence of Trichomonas vaginalis. Both procedures demonstrated greater than 90% agreement in both sensitivity and specificity. When specimens can be examined immediately after collection, it appears that wet-mount microscopy is almost as sensitive as acridine orange staining for detection of T. vaginalis.

Two cases of recurrent bleeding from the gastro-intestinal tract are described. The initial diagnosis and the identification of the lesions at laparotomy were difficult problems. In both cases the bleeding was due to a vascular lesion of the small bowel, referred to as angiodysplasia. The lesions were detected before operation by selective angiography and identified at laparotomy by a preoperative and an intraoperative injection of a vital stain through the catheter into the feeding vessels.
