Protocol for Candrive II/Ozcandrive, a multicentre prospective older driver cohort study.

The Candrive II/Ozcandrive study, a multicentre prospective cohort study examining the predictive validity of tools for assessing fitness to drive, aims to develop an in-office screening tool that will help clinicians identify older drivers who may be unsafe to drive. This paper describes the study protocol. We are following a cohort of drivers aged ≥70 years for up to 4 years. Starting in 2009, 928 participants have been recruited in seven cities in four Canadian provinces, as well as 302 participants in two sites in Melbourne, Australia and Wellington, New Zealand. Participants underwent a c

Personalized AAC Intervention to Increase Participation and Communication for a Young Adult with Down Syndrome.

Many adults with Down syndrome (DS) experience difficulty with speech production, and intelligibility challenges and communication breakdowns are common. Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) intervention can provide important supports for persons with these complex communication needs, but must be customized to address the goals, strengths, and needs of the individual. This article provides a description of a personalized AAC intervention for a young adult with DS whose speech was frequently unintelligible. The AAC intervention made use of a video visual scene display (VSD) approac

Lessons Learned from Implementing a Centrally Organized, Cross-Sectoral, Patient-Centered Treatment Coordination System for Hazardous Substance Use and Substance Use Disorders: The Randomized Controlled ASSIST Study.

UNLABELLED: <p>Introduction: Although effective treatments for substance use disorders (SUDs) are available in Germany, only a fraction of individuals use them. Barriers include the complexity of the addiction support system, implementation challenges, limited coordination and communication between the different sectors and services, and stigma-related factors such as shame and guilt. Innovative, accessible, and patient-centered care models are rarely effectively implemented. The ASSIST study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a sector-independent, individualized treatment coordination mod

Information needs in vascular access decision-making: A qualitative study of patient and clinical stakeholder perspectives.

BACKGROUND: The information and decision support needs required to embed a patient-centred strategy are challenging, as several haemodialysis vascular access strategies are possible with significant differences in short- and long-term outcomes of potential treatment options. We aimed to explore and describe stakeholder perspectives on information needs when making decisions about vascular access (VA) for haemodialysis. METHODS: We performed thematic analysis of seven (six online, one in person) focus group discussions including transcripts, post-it phrases and text responses with 14 patients

The Family Perspectives Project: development and preliminary feasibility of a chaplain-delivered emotional support intervention for families of critically ill patients.

While guidelines recommend that families of critically ill patients receive emotional support from intensive care unit (ICU) clinicians, few receive it. To address this gap, we designed the Family Perspectives Project, an intervention that utilizes hospital chaplains to enhance the emotional support that ICU teams provide to families. This study's objective was to refine and preliminarily test the feasibility and acceptability of the intervention. The work occurred in two steps. First, we conducted qualitative interviews with stakeholders (n = 12) to refine the proposed intervention and design

Masculinities and sexual and reproductive health and rights: a global research priority setting exercise.

Engaging men and boys in sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and doing so in a way that challenges harmful masculinities, is both neglected and vital for improving the SRHR of both women and men. To address this gap, WHO commissioned a global research priority setting exercise on masculinities and SRHR. The exercise adapted the quantitative child health and nutrition research initiative priority setting method by combining it with qualitative methods. Influenced by feminist and decolonial perspectives, over 200 diverse stakeholders from 60 countries across all WHO regions particip

Analysis of patient reported outcomes included in the registrational clinical trials of nivolumab for advanced non-small cell lung cancer.

In the era of value-based oncology care, stakeholders are increasingly using patient reported outcomes (PROs) to guide clinical and regulatory decisions. PROs are also included in health technology assessments to guide patient access, drug reimbursement and pricing. We reviewed PROs collected in the United States Food and Drug Administration approved indications of nivolumab in advanced NSCLC. We analyzed the PRO data reported in the CheckMate 9LA (NCT03215706), CheckMate 227 (NCT02477826), CheckMate 057 (NCT01673867), and CheckMate 017 (NCT01642004) registrational clinical trials, and conclud

Linking Women Experiencing Incarceration to Community-Based HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Care: A Qualitative Study.

Women experiencing incarceration (WEI) in the United States are disproportionately impacted by HIV, yet HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is underutilized by women in the United States. In order to inform an intervention to promote PrEP initiation during incarceration and facilitate linkage to PrEP care following release from incarceration, we conducted individual, semistructured qualitative interviews with WEI (N = 21) and key stakeholders (N = 14). While WEI had little or no previous knowledge about PrEP, they viewed it as something that would benefit women involved in the criminal justice

Community Engagement in the Diagnosis and Control of a Bovine Paralytic Rabies Outbreak in Two Rural Communities of Mexico.

Rabies is a neglected zoonosis with adverse public health effects. We describe the community engagement in containing a bovine paralytic rabies outbreak in two rural communities of Mexico. We carried out a participatory rapid appraisal using different community participation techniques for 2 weeks, including information sharing, community meetings, prioritization of activities, and training. In addition to the animal census and vaccination, necropsy and immunofluorescence tests were performed to diagnose rabies. Cattle mortality during the outbreak of bovine paralytic rabies was 4.5% (15/331);

Using Registry Data to Understand Disease Evolution in Inflammatory Myositis and Other Rheumatic Diseases.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: While rheumatic disease registries collect longitudinal patient information, longitudinal analytic methods are usually not applied to these data. This review will showcase advances in longitudinal designs/analyses, and ways to leverage digital technologies to recruit and retain more registry participants. RECENT FINDINGS: We will show how the accelerated cohort and longitudinal multiform methods are more efficient than traditional longitudinal designs. We illustrate how a smartphone app is used to recruit participants for a new rheumatic disease registry in the USA. Example

Optimising the PTSD Hub App Through Co-Production: Enhancing Digital Support for PTSD Management in Primary Care.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) affects approximately 1 in 20 individuals, with primary care playing a crucial role in early identification and management. However, PTSD is frequently underdiagnosed in primary care settings. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the incidence of PTSD, leading to an increased demand for accessible mental health services. While NICE guidelines recommend trauma-focused therapies, access remains limited, underscoring the need for alternative strategies to support management within primary care. AIM: To optimise and refine through co-production t

Sickle cell disease awareness and perception among Christian religious leaders in Accra Metropolis: a qualitative study.

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a severe hemoglobin gene mutation disorder inherited from both parents. 2% of Ghanaian newborns are affected by SCD; one in three Ghanaians has the hemoglobin S gene. Christian religious leaders may play a role in the prevention of SCD through the promotion of genetic counseling, genotype screening for premarital couples, and offering counseling to couples on prenatal screening and diagnosis for SCD. However, little is known about the awareness and perception of SCD among Christian religious leaders in Ghana, and this study aims to explore these. This study adopted

Expert Panel Consensus on State-Level Policies to Improve Engagement and Retention in Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder.

IMPORTANCE: In the US, recent legislation and regulations have been considered, proposed, and implemented to improve the quality of treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD). However, insufficient empirical evidence exists to identify which policies are feasible to implement and successfully improve patient and population-level outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To examine expert consensus on the effectiveness and the ability to implement state-level OUD treatment policies. EVIDENCE REVIEW: This qualitative study used the ExpertLens online platform to conduct a 3-round modified Delphi process to convene 66

Communication about sexual orientation and gender between clinicians, LGBT+ people facing serious illness and their significant others: a qualitative interview study of experiences, preferences and recommendations.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare organisations have legal and ethical duties to reduce inequalities in access to healthcare services and related outcomes. However, lesbian, gay, bisexual and/or transgender (LGBT+) people continue to experience and anticipate discrimination in health and social care. Skilled communication is vital for quality person-centred care, but there is inconsistent provision of evidence-based clinician education on health needs and experiences of LGBT+ people to support this. This study aimed to identify key stakeholders' experiences, preferences and best practices for communicati

Challenges and solutions to banning the advertisement of unhealthy products: a qualitative study.

Unhealthy products (food, alcohol, tobacco) are among the main risk factors of non-communicable diseases. To discourage the consumption of these products, Iran has passed a law banning the advertisement of unhealthy products in all media and for all age groups. The purpose of the present study was to identify the challenges of this approach and provide evidence to facilitate the enforcement process and the participation of stakeholders. In this qualitative study participants were selected from the policymakers and experts involved in the banning of advertisements on unhealthy products in Iran.
