Diagnostic methods for intestinal parasites in southern Iraq with reference to Strongyloides stercoralis.

Three hundred and thirty-two stool samples were examined for the presence of intestinal parasites including Strongyloides stercoralis. Each … , the Harada and Mori culture method is recommended in patients with undiagnosed diarrhea and where strongyloidiasis is endemic or suspected. Investigation of the relationship between age of the patients and prevalence showed that the prevalence of total intestinal parasites and of Strongyloides alone had essentially levelled off by age 11-20 and 21-30 years old, …

Terminal infections in renal transplant patients in a tropical environment.

Infections were a major cause of death in 84% of 38 autopsied renal allograft recipients in a south Indian hospital. Pyogenic bacteria and fungi were the most common etiological agents encountered, being present in 50 and 47% of cases, respectively. Tuberculosis and hepatitis B virus infection were more prevalent and Pneumocystis carinii and cytomegalovirus disease rarer than in comparable series from non-tropical countries. 1 case each of amoebiasis, strongyloidiasis and filariasis were the parasitic infections encountered.

Strongyloides stercoralis Presenting as Duodenitis and Colitis: A Case Report.

We report a case of Strongyloides stercoralis infection in an Ethiopian female refugee with advanced, untreated HIV who presented with weight loss, dysphagia, gastrointestinal bleeding, and pancytopenia. Duodenal and colonic biopsies confirmed the diagnosis, and the patient was successfully treated with oral ivermectin and initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART), with full symptom resolution at follow-up. This case underscores the importance of maintaining a high clinical suspicion for strongyloidiasis in immunocompromised refugees from endemic regions, even when classic markers such as eos…

Cutaneous Strongyloides Infection Postchemotherapy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: While clinical symptoms of strongyloidiasis are often nonspecific, larva currens (with erythematous, serpiginous, and pruritic papules and plaques) should prompt investigation including stool microscopy, serology, and skin biopsy of the lesion. Appropriate diagnosis and treatment with ivermectin is necessary, especially in the immunocompromised patient who is at increased risk for hyperinfection syndrome and disseminated disease. CONCLUSION: We present a 61-year-old immunocompromised man with presentation of larva currens of cutaneous strongyloides infection without …

Strongyloides infection in Hawaii: an imported case.

Tropical diseases may present anywhere in the world. A case of strongyloidiasis in Hawaii, identified by a characteristic manifestation, larva currens, is described. Strongyloides infection may persist long after leaving an endemic area through the mechanism of autoinfection and, especially under circumstances of immunosuppression, may become overwhelming (the hyperinfection syndrome), with a likelihood of being fatal. Each case of Strongyloides infection should be treated aggressively in order to prevent this dangerous outcome; in addition, the parasite should be eliminated before immunosuppr…

Cutaneous manifestations of intestinal helminthic infections.

Several intestinal helminths may involve the skin. In cutaneous larva migrans and enterobiasis this is often the only organ involved, whereas hookworm and trichinosis are characterized by multisystem disease. The clinical spectrum of strongyloidiasis may range from a low-grade chronic dermatitis to a fulminant, often fatal, hyperinfection syndrome in the immunocompromised host. In the absence of recent breakthroughs in diagnostic testing, a meticulous history and knowledge of the life cycles and the often characteristic skin manifestations of these parasites remain essential to prompt diagnosi…

Public health significance of intestinal parasitic infections. WHO Expert Committee.

Intestinal parasitic infections are distributed virtually throughout the world, with high prevalence rates in many regions. Amoebiasis, ascariasis, hookworm infection and trichuriasis are among the ten most common infections in the world. Other parasitic infections such as abdominal angiostrongyliasis, intestinal capillariasis, and strongyloidiasis are of local or regional public health concern. The prevention and control of these infections are now more feasible than ever before owing to the discovery of safe and efficacious drugs, the improvement and simplification of some diagnostic procedu…

Strongyloides Hyperinfection Causing Gastrointestinal Bleeding and Bacteremia in an Immunocompromised Patient.

Strongyloidiasis is a parasitic infestation caused by Strongyloides stercoralis (S. stercoralis). Most cases are asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic with respiratory, gastrointestinal, or non-specific cutaneous symptoms. However, in immunocompromised patients, such as patients on chronic corticosteroids, malignancy, or human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, hyperinfection syndrome can occur. The following is a case of Strongyloides hyperinfection in an individual taking prednisone for uveitis who developed upper gastrointestinal (GI) bleed and gram-negative bacteremia.

Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection causing eosinophilic ascites.

Strongyloidiasis is associated with Strongyloides stercoralis, an intestinal nematode with greater prevalence in tropical and subtropical regions. Hyperinfection syndrome with dissemination may occur in immunosuppressed individuals. However, invasion of peritoneal cavity with peritoneal effusion is rarely reported in the literature. We report a case of S. stercoralis hyperinfection in a young alcoholic patient with Diabetes mellitus, liver disease and ascites. Diagnostic paracentesis showed numerous filariform larvae of S. stercoralis against a background of eosinophils.

Molecular characterisation of extracellular vesicles released by Strongyloides stercoralis infective larvae isolated from a clinical sample.

BACKGROUND: Extracellular vesicles (EVs) represent a key mechanism of host-pathogen crosstalk. Numerous helminth parasites have already been reported to shed EV-like structures carrying biomolecules, including small RNAs (sRNAs), with functional effects on target cells. However, the ability of Strongyloides stercoralis to release EVs has yet to be demonstrated. METHODS AND RESULTS: Following the isolation of S. stercoralis infective larvae (iL3s) from faecal samples obtained from a patient with strongyloidiasis, we showed that iL3s maintained in vitro for up to 48 h release EV-like structures…

Generation of IgG antibodies against Strongyloides stercoralis in mice via immunization with recombinant antigens A133 and Ss-IR.

Strongyloidiasis, caused by the nematode Strongyloides stercoralis, remains a threat to global public health, and a vaccine would be useful to control the disease, especially in developing countries. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of recombinant proteins, A133 and Ss-IR, as potential vaccine candidates against strongyloidiasis by investigating the humoral and cellular immune responses in immunized mice. Respective antigens were adjuvanted with Complete Freund's Adjuvant (prime) and Incomplete Freund's Adjuvant (boost) and administered intraperitoneally (prime) and subcutaneously (bo…

New Perspectives about Drug Candidates Targeting HTLV-1 and Related Diseases.

Among the human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV) types, HTLV-1 is the most prevalent, and it has been linked to a spectrum of diseases, including HAM/TSP, ATLL, and hyperinfection syndrome or disseminated strongyloidiasis. There is currently no globally standard first-line treatment for HTLV-1 infection and its related diseases. To address this, a comprehensive review was conducted, analyzing 30 recent papers from databases PubMed, CAPES journals, and the Virtual Health Library (VHL). The studies encompassed a wide range of therapeutic approaches, including antiretrovirals, immunomodulators, antine…

Case Report: Strongyloides stercoralis Hyperinfection in a Patient with HTLV-1: An Infection with Filariform and Rhabditiform Larvae, Eggs, and Free-Living Adult Females Output.

Strongyloides stercoralis is the main etiological agent of human strongyloidiasis. Severe strongyloidiasis is commonly associated to alcoholism, corticostereoid use, and human T cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) coinfection. Herein, we report a case of a 13-year-old boy coinfected with S. stercoralis and HTLV-1, excreting several parasitic forms in the stool. The parasitological examination of his feces showed a large amount of filariform (about 3,000 larvae per gram of feces) and rhabditiform larvae (about 2,000 larvae per gram of feces). In addition, free-living adult females (about 50…
