Development of extracranial carotid artery aneurysm (ECCA) after carotid endarterectomy (CEA) is a rare complication, occurring in connection with <1% of all CEAs. The main causes are infection, suture failure, and degeneration of arterial wall or patch. The traditional treatment has been operative repair, which can present a significant technical challenge owing to reoperative neck inflammation and potential cranial nerve injuries. Here, we report a case of successful stent-assisted coil embolization for right noninfectious ECCA. A 63-year-old female was admitted to our hospital for a 3-cm pu

Osteophytes are associated with later stage osteoarthritis and are most commonly described using semiquantitative radiographic grading systems. A detailed understanding of osteophyte formation is, in part, limited by the ability to quantify bone pathology. Osteophytes can be quantified relative to pre-osteoarthritic bone, or to the contralateral bone if it is healthy; however, in many cases, neither are available as references. We present a method for computing three-dimensional (3D) osteophyte models using a library of healthy control bones. An existing data set containing the computed tomogr

BACKGROUND: Superficial temporal artery (STA) to superior cerebellar artery (SCA) bypass is associated with a relatively high risk of surgical complications, such as hematoma and/or edema caused by temporal lobe retraction. Therefore, the right side is typically used to avoid retraction of the left temporal lobe. In this report, we present a case of left STA-SCA bypass with anterior petrosectomy to avoid retraction of dominant-side temporal lobe and describe the surgical technique in detail.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 69-year-old man presented with gradual worsening of dysarthria and gait disturbanc

AIM: Traditional craniotomies for treatment of the aneurysms at the A3 segment of anterior cerebral artery (A3As), such as frontal approach and interhemispheric approach, require pre-hairline incision and relatively long incision, extensive bone flap, inevitable supraorbital nerve injury, opening frontal sinus, and increased operative time. Here we reported anterior interhemispheric keyhole approach with minimally invasive advantages for treatment of A3As.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirteen A3As and one A1 aneurysm in thirteen patients were confirmed by computed tomographic angiography (CTA) and/

OBJECTIVE: To report the successful correction of a severe, fixed kyphotic deformity utilizing a combination posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) and Ponte osteotomy at the site of acute kyphosis.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: There have been no reports on the experience and surgical strategy of combined one-level focal PLIF and Ponte osteotomy for fixed severe kyphotic deformity. Typically, these corrections would need a pedicle subtraction osteotomy or a vertebrectomy.
METHODS: A 24-year-old man presented with progressive back pain and a fixed severe thoracolumbar kyphosis centered at th

PURPOSE: To assess the effect of autosomal dominant optic atrophy (ADOA) on ON and OFF retinal ganglion cell (RGC) function by evaluating the ON and OFF components of the photopic negative response (PhNR).
METHODS: Twelve participants from six families with OPA1 ADOA and 16 age-matched controls were recruited. Electrophysiological assessment involved pattern ERGs (PERGs), focal (20°) and full-field long-duration (250 ms) flash ERGs using a red light-emitting diode flash on a rod-saturating blue background, and full-field brief (300 μs) xenon flash ERGs using a red filter over a continuous rod

We studied the potassium current flowing through TREK-1 channels in rat cardiac ventricular myocytes. We separated the TREK-1 current from other current components by blocking most other channels with a blocker cocktail. We tried to inhibit the TREK-1 current by activating protein kinase A (PKA) with a mixture of forskolin and isobutyl-methylxanthine (IBMX). Activation of PKA blocked an outwardly rectifying current component at membrane potentials positive to -40 mV. At 37 °C, application of forskolin plus IBMX reduced the steady-state outward current measured at positive voltages by about 52

We report a series of young adults with symptomatic cerebral arteriostenosis characterized by elevated serum immunoglobulin (Ig) E levels. All patients had no definite risk factors for cerebral vascular diseases. The clinical data of 26 young adults (age 18-50 years) with ischemic stroke, characterized only by increased serum IgE levels and without risk factors for cerebral vascular disease, were retrospectively reviewed. Arteriostenosis was surveyed and followed-up by digital subtraction angiography (DSA), and the stenosis rate was estimated using the warfarin-aspirin symptomatic intracranial

PURPOSE: The free vascularised hemi-hamate flap combines the utility of providing a small osteochondral portion of hamate for reconstruction, while providing a means of vascularisation to preserve articular cartilage after transfer. In Part 1 of this series, we highlighted the vascular approaches to such a technique. The current study investigates the bony architecture of the hamate, with particular emphasis on its utility for a range of osteochondral defects in the hand.
METHODS: A morphometric assessment of the hamate as a potential osteochondral flap donor site for resurfacing digital phal

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cerebral artery fenestrations (CAF) are rare congenital variations usually diagnosed by digital subtraction angiography (DSA). The aim of this study was to examine the frequency of occurrence of fenestrations in cerebral arteries and their coexistence with cerebral aneurysms in computed tomography angiography (CTA).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: All reports of cerebral CTA (1140) performed in one institution from March 2005 to December 2007 were analysed. We found 40 patients with single fenestrations of the intracranial arteries. All 40 examinations were retrospectively revie

There have been plenty of reconstruction methods for ear amputation, and replantation preserves its importance. In situations where replantation is not feasible, various methods were proposed. We indicate an alternative technique for the ear amputation without replantation indication. The method of replacing of a vascular structure into the tunnel formed on the posterior side of the amputated ear was used instead of replacing the ear cartilage into a vascular area that was described in the literature of ear prefabrication. The dorsal fascial flaps which were prepared from the back of 10 New Ze

PURPOSE: Preoperative Tc-99m sestamibi scanning can identify candidates for minimally invasive parathyroid surgery. However, a significant number of patients with single gland disease have negative scans and are not considered for the minimally invasive procedure.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: To determine if T1-201/Tc-99m sodium pertechnetate subtraction scanning (TPSS) is a viable alternative imaging technique for patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (1 degrees HPTH), we reviewed our experience. The outcomes of 100 consecutive patients with 1 degrees HPTH who underwent preoperative TPSS and p

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy (PELD) has emerged as a first-line surgical option for the management of lumbar disc herniation (LDH). However, postoperative complications remain a concern. We present a rare case of retroperitoneal hematoma (RPH) following PELD.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 79-year-old woman who underwent PELD presented with pain in the left inguinal region, lower back, and abdomen, accompanied by hypotension and tachycardia. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) revealed a left-sided RPH. Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) identified a rupture of a left fourth l

Pediatric renovascular hypertension (RVH) is a significant cause of secondary hypertension in children, often resulting from renal artery stenosis (RAS) due to nonatherosclerotic etiologies such as fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD), mid aortic syndrome (MAS), and syndromic conditions like neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1). Early diagnosis is critical to prevent long-term complications, including renal dysfunction and cardiovascular disease. Diagnostic evaluation begins with ultrasound, which, despite its limitations, remains the first-line modality. Advanced imaging techniques such as CT angiography

Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a notorious pathogen, frequently presents in hospitals and poses numerous health issues due to its drug resistance, making treatment challenging. The rise of multidrug-resistant microorganisms emphasizes the crucial need for novel therapeutic approaches, such as vaccines. This work employed immunoinformatics and subtractive proteomics to find possible universal vaccine candidates. After analyzing the proteome of P. aeruginosa (PAO1 strain), three pathogenic or antigenic proteins were identified as potential targets for vaccines. T and B cell epitopes were predicted from

Splenic artery aneurysms (SAAs) are among the most common visceral aneurysms behind aortic and iliac arteries. Certain factors like aneurysm size (especially giant SAAs), hypertension (HTN), symptomatology, pregnancy, portal hypertension (pHTN), and liver transplantation increase the risk of rupture. Most often found incidentally, but when symptomatic, can present with nonspecific symptoms like nausea, vomiting, anorexia, and epigastric/left upper quadrant pain. Diagnosis can be accomplished with different modalities of CT or MRI and digital subtraction angiography (DSA) being the gold standar
