Trailblazing New Heights: A Historical Journey of the Women Plastic Surgeons Forum.

The concept of an organized group of Women Plastic Surgeons Forum originated in 1990 after the American Society of Plastic Surgeons annual meeting in Boston, Massachusetts. Grappling with concerns over the safety of silicone breast implants and their detriment to patients, 12 female plastic surgeons gathered to address this issue. Thus, the Women's Plastic Surgery Caucus was established in 1992 to advocate for patients and build representation in a historically male-dominated field. Although officially established in 2003, the Women Plastic Surgeons Forum has provided a community for empowerin

History and Evolution of Lower Extremity Salvage.

There has been a paradigm shift in the management of lower extremity injury from amputations to more complex limb salvage techniques. Despite advancements in orthopedic surgery, trauma surgery, plastic surgery, and vascular surgery, not every patient is a candidate for complex lower extremity limb salvage. For this reason, novel advancements in plastic and reconstructive surgery have targeted not only limb salvage but also functional amputations. Here we review the history and advancements in microsurgical limb salvage and lower extremity amputation to discern how today's surgeon can better ai…

Surgical Education for Pressure Injuries: A Survey of What Residents are Learning in Ontario.

Background: The optimal surgical management of complex pressure injuries (PIs) relies on adequate education during residency. However, both classroom-based and clinical exposure to these injuries may be inconsistent across training programs. This study aimed to evaluate Ontario surgical residents' exposure to PI management and identify deficiencies in current curricula. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was developed and distributed to general, orthopaedic, and plastic surgery residents across Ontario. The survey collected data on didactic and clinical exposure to PI management, confidence in

Obesity surgery: French medico-legal aspects.

The demand for bariatric surgery is expected to increase. It is a procedure that carries a high surgical risk, and a risk of postoperative complications due to the pathologies associated with obesity. Obesity surgery is not classified as plastic surgery, but may subsequently lead to plastic surgery-type operations. Malpractices in the field of obesity surgery are most frequently at the pre-operative stage. In the absence of any fault, a patient may obtain indemnification by "national solidarity". Physicians and surgeons have an obligation to be able to prove that they informed their patients p

Impact of Specialty Training on the Association between Flap Size and Incidence of Complications following Microvascular Head and Neck Reconstruction for Cancer.

BACKGROUND: The scope of otolaryngology and plastic surgery overlap within head and neck reconstruction is increasing; yet comparative outcome studies between these two subspecialties are limited. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed on all patients who underwent microvascular reconstruction of a postablative head and neck defect at a quaternary academic medical center between January 2000 and October 2011. Postoperative outcomes were reviewed by subspecialty and Mann-Whitney analysis was used to investigate any flap size differences between cohorts with and without complications. R

Development of reconstructive surgery services in the Gaza Strip, Palestine.

Plastic surgery involves the restoration, alteration or reconstruction of the human body. It includes reconstructive and aesthetic surgery. This paper discusses the authors' experience introducing new reconstructive, microsurgical and aesthetic surgeries in the Gaza Strip. We analyzed 192 cases of reconstruction carried out in the Al-Alamy Burns Center in Al-Shifa Hospital from August 2017 to July 2018 and at the European Gaza Hospital during a one-month delegation, as well as 38 aesthetic surgeries performed in the author's private clinic. We highlight challenges hindering the development of

Hereditary coagulopathies: practical diagnosis and management for the plastic surgeon.

BACKGROUND: Venous thromboembolism is a devastating complication representing one of the major causes of postoperative death in plastic surgery. Within the scope of plastic surgery, body-contouring procedures are often considered to carry a higher risk of venous thromboembolism. Hereditary thrombophilias comprise a group of conditions defined by a genetic predisposition to thrombosis development. Collectively, hereditary thrombophilias are present in at least 15 percent of Western populations and underlie approximately half of thromboembolic events. Although the topic of venous thromboembolism

The Full Continuum of Robotic Breast Surgery: Robotic-assisted Mastectomy, Robotic DIEP Flap, and Robotic Supermicrosurgery.

In recent years, robotic surgery has rapidly expanded to improve surgical outcomes in a variety of surgical subspecialties. Although plastic surgery has taken longer to integrate robotic surgery into practice, the advantages of robotic-assisted surgery, including improved visualization and resolution, minimally invasive approaches, and the ability to surpass human precision and scale, have driven its more recent adoption into plastic surgery. Currently, procedures performed with robotic assistance that are considered part of the continuum of surgical treatment of breast cancer include robotic-

Geospatial and Socioeconomic Factors Interact to Predict Management and Outcomes in Cleft Lip and Palate Surgery: A Single Institution Study of 740 Patients.

OBJECTIVE: Determine interactions between geospatial and socioeconomic factors influencing cleft lip and/or cleft palate (CL/P) management and outcomes. DESIGN: Retrospective review and outcomes analysis (n = 740). SETTING: Urban academic tertiary care center. PATIENTS: 740 patients undergoing primary (CL/P) surgery from 2009 to 2019. MAIN OUTCOMES MEASURES: Prenatal evaluation by plastic surgery, nasoalveolar molding, cleft lip adhesion, and age at CL/P surgery. RESULTS: Prenatal evaluation by plastic surgery was predicted by the interaction between higher patient median block group inco
