Palmar hyperhidrosis represents a condition with a significant cosmetic and psychological burden. Various treatment modalities are available; however, searching for newer options to meet patients' needs and expectations is encouraged. The study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) for treatment of primary palmar hyperhidrosis. Two different photosensitizers for PDT were evaluated: eosin Y, and methylene blue. The study focused on the clinical efficacy, patient's satisfaction, and the time and number of sessions needed to achieve a satisfactory response. Twenty patients

PURPOSE: To evaluate, via a systematic review, the effectiveness of radiofrequency (RF) for treatment of primary hyperhidrosis (PH).
METHODS: Experimental or observational studies were included where RF treatment (ablation or microneedling) was performed, comparing the periods before and after treatment.
RESULTS: Nine studies were considered eligible and included for analysis. In seven of nine studies, patients were subjected to RF only, and in two of nine studies RF was compared to video-assisted thoracoscopic sympathectomy (VATS). There was a reduction in the severity of PH in microneedlin…

Renal afferent and efferent sympathetic nerves are involved in the regulation of blood pressure and have a pathophysiological role in hypertension. Additionally, several conditions that frequently coexist with hypertension, such as heart failure, obstructive sleep apnea, atrial fibrillation, renal dysfunction, and metabolic syndrome, demonstrate enhanced sympathetic activity. Renal denervation (RDN) is an approach to reduce renal and whole body sympathetic activation. Experimental models indicate that RDN has the potential to lower blood pressure and prevent cardio-renal remodeling in chronic

We report a case of autoimmunity-associated autonomic failure in a young adult woman who developed arthritis followed 3 years later by pandysautonomia. There was early recovery of parasympathetic functions but persistent neurogenic orthostatic hypotension from post-ganglionic sympathetic denervation. Clinical laboratory testing indicated variable amounts of sympathetic neuronal re-sprouting in the heart, kidneys, eyes, and body as a whole upon follow-up evaluation after 1.5 years.

AIMS: The aim of the present study was to explore the effect of renal sympathetic denervation (RSD) on the progression of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) in canines with long-term intermittent atrial pacing.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Nineteen beagles were randomly divided into sham-operated group (six dogs), control group (six dogs), and RSD group (seven dogs). Sham-operated group were implanted with pacemakers without pacing; control group were implanted with pacemakers with long-term intermittent atrial pacing; and RSD group underwent catheter-based RSD bilaterally and were simultaneously im

PURPOSE: Recent evidence associates sympathetic tone with severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Renal sympathetic denervation (RDN), by decreasing sympathetic tone, has the potential to decrease OSA severity. Small observational studies that assessed this hypothesis lacked precision. Hence, in this meta-analysis, we have attempted to pool available data from studies that have assessed the effect of RDN on OSA severity in patients with OSA.
METHODS: Medline, Embase, Cochrane central, Ovid, Cinahl, web of science, and conference abstracts were searched for eligible citations by two indepen

Renal sympathetic denervation (RSD) opens new perspectives and possibilities not only in the treatment of resistant hypertension but also of other cardiometabolic diseases. In patients with hypertension, it has been demonstrated that activity of the sympathetic nervous system correlates with grade of hypertension. Decreasing sympathetic activity using RSD significantly reduces blood pressure in resistant hypertension. It is too early to say a definite opinion about appropriateness of this method in the treatment of resistant hypertension, because there are not great studies with huge number of

Many people who complain of excessive sweating have primary hyperhidrosis. This idiopathic disorder is characterised by excessive, bilateral and roughly symmetrical sweating, most commonly affecting the axillae, palms, feet and face. For some patients, excessive sweating is intolerable as it stains and damages clothes, reduces confidence and limits social contact. Treatment options have been limited but now include botulinum toxin for severe axillary hyperhidrosis. Here we review treatments for primary focal hyperhidrosis, focusing on axillary sweating.

This study was undertaken to determine if better results could be achieved by comparing the results of a thoracic sympathetic ramicotomy (division of rami communicantes) with a conventional thoracic sympathicotomy (division of sympathetic trunk) for treating essential hyperhidrosis. From August 2001 to February 2002, 29 consecutive patients underwent surgery of the sympathetic nerves in order to treat severe essential hyperhidrosis. Of these patients, a ramicotomy was performed under VATS (VATS-R) in 13 patients, sympathicotomy under VATS (VATS-S) in 13, a unilateral ramicotomy and contralater

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The second sympathetic thoracic ganglion has long been regarded as the most important structure in all sympathetic procedures for any indication, be it hand sweating, blushing, or social phobia. Earlier, we had found an interesting new basis for the selection of more specific methods in individual disorders. The aim of the present study was to either confirm the old theory or to bring forward a more appropriate theory for sympathetic surgery to be used as a classified method.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Altogether 193 patients were treated in Taiwan and 55 in Finland according

BACKGROUND: Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, can be emotionally challenging and socially and professionally disruptive, and there have been few effective treatments. Recently, botulinum toxin has been demonstrated to be an effective treatment for hyperhidrosis of the axillae and palms and for gustatory sweating.
OBJECTIVE: This article reviews the current treatments and outcomes achieved with chemodenervation of the eccrine sweat glands.
RESULTS: The antihydrotic response lasted 6-17 months for gustatory sweating, 2-8 months for axillary sweating, and 13 weeks to 12 months for palmar sw

The ongoing activity of the ganglionic cells innervating the normal and partial denervated submandibular gland of rat was investigated with intracellular recording. With the aim to be identified these cells were preliminary labeled by the fluorescent dye Di-1. The most of neurons innervating the normal gland were entirely silent. Ongoing activity was found only in 11% of these neurons and the average frequency of discharge was 0.1 +/- 0.01/s. After partial denervation of the gland, the number of active ganglion cells among the neurons innervating the gland increased from 11 to 42%. The average

The effect of centrally administered corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) on intraocular pressure (IOP) was investigated using the technique of ventriculocisternal perfusion. Various amounts of ovine CRF (0.01, 0.033, 0.1 and 0.33 micrograms/min) were perfused in conscious, male New Zealand albino rabbits for 1 hour. At a dose level of 0.1 or 0.33 micrograms/min, CRF caused an acute IOP decrease of 2.5 mmHg, which lasted for 30 min. Perfusions with CRF at 0.033 micrograms/min or higher caused delayed ocular hypotension, which began 20 hours after the perfusion and lasted for 2 days. Bolus intr
