[Shoulder and arm injuries in alpine ski racing. A survey on the frequency of these injuries with athletes of the Swiss Ski cadres and the regional cadres].

The aim of this work was to examine the frequency and pattern of injuries of the upper extremity among Swiss Ski athletes and among regional … ed for both genders and in all teams in the training. While in men all injury patterns (contusions, tendon injuries, luxations, fractures) occur, fractures are the dominating injury in ladies.

Acute badminton injuries.

During 1990-1994, 1.2% of all sports injuries that required emergency care at the University Hospital of Umeå were caused by badminton. In 90.7% of the cases the patients described themselves as recreational players or beginners. There were 51.3% minor injuries (AIS 1) and 48.7% moderate injuries (AIS 2). The lower extremities were affected in 92.3% of the cases. Achilles tendon ruptures (34.6%) and ankle sprains and fractures (29.5%) were the most frequent. By the time of the follow-up (10-69 months), 52.6% of the players still had symptoms from the injuries and 39.5% had not been able to ret

The changing shape of hand trauma: an analysis of Hospital Episode Statistics in England.

Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) include freely accessible records of all hospital episodes in England. We analysed HES from 1998-1999 to 2014-2015 for diagnoses of hand fractures, tendon injuries, nerve injuries, blood vessel injuries, traumatic amputations and nail bed injuries. Population data were used to calculate the incidence. The overall incidence of the injuries increased from 70 to 110 per 100,000. There were especially large increases in the incidence of fractures in the over 75 years age group and nail bed injuries in the 0-14 years age group. The incidence of nerve injuries also …

Traumatic fracture of Kager's fat pad: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Kager's fat pad is a metabolically active adipose structure within Kager's triangle anterior to the Achilles tendon, involved in shock absorption, vascular support, and tendon lubrication. Although most research has focused on its role in Achilles tendinopathy and inflammatory conditions, isolated traumatic disruption without concurrent tendon damage has been rarely documented in the literature, to our knowledge. We report a case of an isolated traumatic fracture of the Kager's fat pad in the absence of concomitant Achilles tendon injury. CASE PRESENTATION: An otherwise healthy 31

Boot-top tendon lacerations in ice hockey.

Injury to the anterior tibial tendon, extensor hallucis longus, extensor communis tendons, or dorsalis pedis artery, vein, and nerve are known as "boot-top" injuries. A series of five such cases illustrates that the size of laceration is often small and injury to the underlying structures can be missed. This injury should be preventable if equipment is worn properly.

Interposition of posterior tibial tendon in tibiofibular syndesmosis in a bimalleolar ankle fracture: a case report.

Ankle fractures are relatively common orthopaedic injuries; however, irreducible ankle fractures with or without dislocations are a rare, unstable type of injury that require surgical treatment. The structures impeding the accurate reduction of ankle fractures may be soft tissues, such as the deltoid ligament, extensor retinaculum, tendons, or bony fragments between the fracture sites. A 47-year-old male patient with irreducible medial malleolus and distal fibula fracture was referred for treatment. Intraoperatively, it was discovered that failed reduction was due to the interposition of the p

Open repair of retracted latissimus dorsi tendon avulsion.

Latissimus dorsi avulsion injuries are rarely reported in the literature and are managed with a variety of strategies. Primary anatomical repair of tendon to bone may offer athletes the best chance for successful return to sports. In this article, we describe a surgical technique for safely repairing an acute or chronic, retracted, avulsed latissimus tendon back to its insertion on the medial aspect of the bicipital groove of the proximal humerus. Using 1 low anterior axillary incision and 1 posterior axillary incision for tendon retrieval when retraction is more than 5 cm, this technique allo

Early protected motion after extensor tendon repair.

Thirty hands with 50 extensor tendon lacerations, excluding mallet finger injuries, were examined. They were treated with surgical repair followed by immediate motion which included a dynamic splinting and tendon mobilization program. The average follow-up period was 7 months (range, 8 weeks to 2 years). Forty-five of the 50 tendons regained full range of motion (average total active motion, 262 degrees) within an average time of 9 weeks; the remaining 5 tendons had extension lags of < or = 10 degrees. All patients regained at least 93% of their predicted normal strength within 9 to 12 weeks a

[Progress on the treatment of Achilles tendon rupture].

Achilles tendon rupture is an important research topic in the field of sports medicine. Its imaging diagnosis, treatment methods, rehabilitation strategies, and prognosis assessment have always been the focus of academic attention. MRI examination is widely used in diagnosing Achilles tendon rupture, but it has disadvantages such as high cost, long examination time, and metal contraindications. Ultrasound examination has the advantages of being non-invasive, low cost, comfortable, and portable, and it also has high specificity and accuracy, which has significant application value. The treatmen

Gross Anatomy: Achilles Tendon.

The Achilles tendon is well known as the strongest tendon within the body. Its anatomic composition is unique to allow absorption of extreme loads. Historically, there has been a longstanding belief that rupture of the Achilles tendon occurs within a "watershed" region of ischemia. However, experimental data have demonstrated uniform hemodynamic flow throughout the tendon to challenge this widespread notion.

Histological analysis and biomechanical evaluation of fatty infiltration after rotator cuff tear and suprascapular nerve injury in a rat model.

BACKGROUND: Rotator cuff tears are the most common shoulder injury, and little is known about the underlying etiology of fatty infiltration after rotator cuff tear. Previous studies speculated that rotator cuff tears lead to neural injury due to tethering of the suprascapular nerve at the notch. This study aimed to evaluate fatty infiltration after suprascapular nerve injury and rotator cuff tears. METHODS: Ninety adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were used and were divided into four groups: sham, tendon transection only, suprascapular nerve ligation, and tendon transection plus suprascapular ne

Protocol for Functional Rehabilitation of Achilles Tendon Ruptures.

Acute Achilles tendon ruptures are common injuries, which had traditionally been managed surgically due to reported high rerupture rates in historic articles. However, recent evidence supports nonoperative treatment with accelerated functional rehabilitation, demonstrating equivalent rerupture rates and functional outcomes while avoiding surgical risks. This review provides a comprehensive, guide to nonoperative management of acute Achilles tendon rupture, addressing patient selection, imaging considerations, immobilization strategies, and rehabilitation protocols. Challenges in standardizatio

Modified Pull-Out Technique for Zone One Flexor Digitorum Profundus Repair.

Pull-out suture fixation is widely used to fix zone one flexor tendon injuries. The original technique of Bunnell generally has good results. However, in some cases, it may result in complications, including nail deformity and infection. The all-inside techniques for fixation of the tendon at this zone cannot totally replace the Pull-out technique. In this article, we propose a modification of the pull-out technique, which can reduce the complications and report the results of our patients' series.

Fracture of the tibial tubercle with a Stener-like lesion of the patellar tendon: a case report.

Fractures of the tibial tubercle account for less than 1% of paediatric orthopaedic injuries. We report a case of a 15-year-old boy presenting with a Stener-like lesion of the patellar tendon associated with a fracture of the tibial tubercle. There have been no previously reported cases of this type of injury in the literature. Treatment with open reduction and internal fixation of the fracture along with a repair of the patellar tendon can result in an excellent functional outcome.

Open posterior dislocation of the knee with rupture of the patellar tendon and a tibial plateau fracture.

Knee dislocations are rare injuries. They represent a severe soft tissue injury following high-energy blunt trauma. We report a case of open posterior knee dislocation with rupture of the patellar tendon and a fracture of the tibial plateau. The treatment was surgical and consisted of reduction of the knee dislocation, fixation of the tibial plateau fracture by lag screws, and transosseous sutures for the patellar tendon protected by a patellotibial cerclage. The result was successful with full range of motion.

Digital replantation: clinical experiences.

In a series of 130 digital replantations successful revascularization has been obtained in 74% of cases. Arterial thrombosis is the most common cause (65%) of all failures. A useful digit can be obtained following replantation and the surgery is particularly indicated for amputated thumbs and in hands suffering multiple injuries. Precautionary measures against bleeding are absolutely essential. Primary tendon and nerve repairs are advocated. Vascular occlusion may be corrected by revisional surgery and secondary surgery can improve tendon nerve or joint function.
