Tribo-Mechanical and Antibacterial Performance of 3D Printed hBN/PEGDA Nanocomposites for Load-Bearing Tissue Engineering Applications.

Photo-cross-linkable polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA (Mn ≈ 700)) is gaining importance as a potential biomaterial for tissue engineering due to its excellent biocompatibility and its ability to imitate the structural and functional characteristics of native human tissues. However, the limited mechanical and tribological properties of PEGDA constrain its application in load-bearing tissue engineering. To address the challenges associated with the limited mechanical and tribological properties of PEGDA, an attempt has been made to enhance its performance by incorporating an inorganic nanof…

Computational Fluid Dynamics Modeling of Material Transport Through Triply Periodic Minimal Surface Scaffolds for Bone Tissue Engineering.

Cell-laden, scaffold-based tissue engineering methods have been successfully utilized for the treatment of bone fractures and diseases, caused by factors such as trauma, tumors, congenital anomalies, and aging. In such methods, the rate of scaffold biodegradation, transport of nutrients and growth factors, as well as removal of cell metabolic wastes at the site of injury are critical fluid-dynamics factors, affecting cell proliferation and ultimately tissue regeneration. Therefore, there is a critical need to identify the underlying material transport mechanisms and factors associated with cel…

Generation and ex vivo characterization of a full-thickness substitute of the human urethra by tissue engineering.

Tissue engineering may offer efficient alternatives for the surgical repair of severe conditions affecting the human urethra. However, development of tubular full-thickness substitutes is challenging. In this work, we have generated and evaluated ex vivo a novel full-thickness human urethra substitute (FHUS) containing its three main layers: the urethral mucosa (UM), the spongy layer (SP), and the tunica albuginea (AL). Results first showed that the generation of a FHUS significantly improved the biomechanical properties of this artificial tissue as compared to the individual layers, although …

3D-printed polycaprolactone/tricalcium silicate scaffolds modified with decellularized bone ECM-oxidized alginate for bone tissue engineering.

The treatment of large craniofacial bone defects requires more advanced and effective strategies than bone grafts since such defects are challenging and cannot heal without intervention. In this regard, 3D printing offers promising solutions through the fabrication of scaffolds with the required shape, porosity, and various biomaterials suitable for specific tissues. In this study, 3D-printed polycaprolactone (PCL)-based scaffolds containing up to 30 % tricalcium silicate (TCS) were fabricated and then modified by incorporation of decellularized bone matrix- oxidized sodium alginate (DBM-OA).

Natural bone inspired core-shell triple-layered gel/PCL/gel 3D printed scaffolds for bone tissue engineering.

Despite technological advancements in bone tissue engineering, it is still a challenge to fabricate a scaffold with high bioactivity as well as high mechanical strength that can promote osteogenesis as well as bear load. Here we developed a 3D printed gel-polymer multi-layered hybrid scaffold. The innermost layer is porous gel-based framework made of gelatin/carboxymethyl-chitin/nano-hydroxyapatite and is cryogenically 3D printed. Further, the second and middle layer of micro-engineered polycaprolactone (PCL) is infused in the gel with controlled penetration and tuneable coating thickness. The…

Tissue printing for engineering transplantable human parathyroid patch to improve parathyroid engraftment, integration, and hormone secretionin vivo.

During thyroid surgery, some parathyroid glands fail to maintain their function, therefore, they are unavoidably detached from the patient. For the purpose of re-preservation of the function, they are minced into small segments and transplanted into the fat or muscle layer. Yet, this method of auto-grafting the parathyroid glands is frequently unsuccessful due to its poor interaction and engraftment with the native tissue, eventually leading to the dysfunction of the parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion. In this study, we suggest a methodology to restore parathyroid activity through the introdu

Biomatrix from goat-waste in sponge/gel/powder form for tissue engineering and synergistic effect of nanoceria.

For tissue engineering (TE), decellularized matrices gained huge potential as they consist of natural biomolecules which help in cell attachment and proliferation. Among various animal tissues, goat tissue has gained least attention in spite of the fact that goat tissue is less susceptible to disease transmission as compared to cadaveric porcine and bovine tissue. In this study, goat small intestine submucosa (G-SIS) was isolated from goat small intestine (G-SI), a waste from goat-slaughterhouse, and decellularized to obtain decellularized G-SIS (DG-SIS) biomatrix in the form of powder, gel an…
