OBJECTIVE: Splinting in primary dentition is limited to several traumatic dental injuries. The prognosis associated with splint use has not been fully investigated. In this study, we investigated the outcomes of traumatic injuries in primary teeth treated with splinting.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analysed 137 children with root fractures and lateral and extrusive luxation injuries to their primary teeth who were treated with semi-rigid splints between 2010 and 2016. Treatment outcomes were analysed in patients with follow-up periods of >6 months. The outcomes of splinting were

An epidemiological study of traumatic intrusion of permanent teeth was performed on 216 teeth in 151 patients treated over a 50-year period at a major trauma center in Denmark (Copenhagen). This analysis showed that intrusion of permanent teeth was of rare injury only affecting 1.9% of traumatic injuries involving permanent teeth. The main etiologic factor appeared to be falling which resulted in axial impacts on maxillary or mandibular teeth. The most common injury patterns were intrusion without additional injuries (33.5%) and intrusion with crown fractures (60.5%). A few cases were combinat

AIM: This report addresses the management of a large persistent discharging lesion in an 11-year-old boy. The report describes the use of aspiration-irrigation technique for the management of immature necrotic tooth with persistent discharge after a failed regenerative procedure.
BACKGROUND: Regenerative endodontics aim to provide an increase in root canal width, length, and in apical closure. Alternative procedures, such as apexification, should be attempted when regeneration fails. If the canal cannot be dried to persistent discharge, the aspiration-irrigation technique can be used. The tec

Treatment of a traumatically intruded maxillary incisor with an immature apex remains controversial. Treatment options include observation, surgical repositioning, or orthodontic forced eruption. Likewise, the ideal timing of surgical removal of a mesiodens is highly controversial: immediate versus delayed intervention. The complications associated with untreated supernumerary teeth include: overretention of primary teeth, delayed eruption of permanent incisors, rotations, impaction, diastema, pulp necrosis and root resorption. Less common sequelae include enlarged follicular sacs, cystic dege

OBJECTIVE: To explore how central retainer depth affects stress distribution and fracture resistance in endocrown-restored premolars.
METHODS: A 3D finite element (FE) model of an intact maxillary premolar was established as a negative control. Five endocrown-restored FE models were established, differing in the extension of the central retainer inside the pulp chamber: 0, 2, 3, 4 and 5 mm. The remaining pulp cavity was filled with composite resin. Stress distributions were analysed under oblique loads. Thirty freshly extracted human maxillary premolars were randomly divided into three groups

OBJECTIVES: To compare the mechanical performance of partially replaced (repaired) intra-coronal restorations to totally replaced ones in root canal-treated teeth.
METHODS: Thirty maxillary second premolars were selected according to strict criteria, mounted on moulds, and had mesio-occluso-distal (MOD) cavities prepared. Resin composite restorative material was used to perform the initial restoration, followed by aging procedures using thermo-mechanical cycling fatigue to replicate six months of intraoral aging. The specimens were then randomly divided into two groups: a totally replaced res

Treatment outside the dental office: Replant immediately after gentle washing if practical. If replantation is not practical, store the tooth in the best medium available. Storage media in order of preference are Hank's Balanced Salt Solution (HBSS), milk, saline, and saliva (buccal vestibule). Water is the least desirable storage medium. Treatment in the office: Emergency visit; Place tooth in HBSS while exam is conducted and history is taken. Prepare socket for gentle repositioning of the tooth. Prepare the root. Extraoral dry time < 20 minutes: Closed apex--replant immediately after gentle

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a rare genetic condition marked by brittle bones and various degrees of skeletal deformity. It is also referred to as brittle bone disease. There are four forms of OI, and its management relies on preventing fractures and increasing bone strength, which becomes more difficult when treating a juvenile patient in a dental setting. A six-year-old child with OI, type 1, with a history of recurrent multiple fractures, complained of pain in his mandibular teeth. The patient was receiving biannual bisphosphonate injections for OI. During the initial dental appointment,

Although fractures are the defining characteristic of osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), the disorder affects many tissues. Here we discuss three facets of the OI phenotype, skeletal growth and development, skeletal muscle weakness and the dental and craniofacial characteristics. Short stature is almost universal in the more severe forms of OI and is probably caused by a combination of direct effects of the underlying genetic defect on growth plates and indirect effects of fractures, bone deformities and scoliosis. Recent studies have developed OI type-specific growth curves, which allow determinin

Various statistics have shown that avulsion (total displacement of tooth out of its socket) following traumatic injuries is relatively infrequent, ranging from 0.5 to 16% of traumatic injuries in the permanent dentition. The maxillary central incisors are the most frequently avulsed teeth. Avulsion of teeth occurs most often in children from 7 to 9 years of age, when the permanent incisors are erupting. Most frequently, avulsion involves a single tooth; but multiple avulsion are occasionally encountered. Fractures of the alveolar socket wall are often associate with avulsion. After the tooth i

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Teeth deemed nonrestorable because of inadequate ferrule and extensive structural loss, often from deep caries, fractures, or resorptive defects, are routinely planned for extraction and implant placement. Long-term clinical outcome data for a standardized surgical extrusion workflow designed to regain restorability while maintaining biologic stability are limited.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this clinical study was to assess clinical outcomes of surgical extrusion using the Seif surgical extrusion protocol (SSEP) as a tooth preservation alternative to extraction in severely

AIM: Teeth extraction is an important problem in elder patients. Although some of these teeth have been endodontically treated, many of them may be subjected to extraction. The reasons for extraction are important for prevention planning in further patients. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and important reasons for extraction of endodontically treated teeth in adult Nigerians.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study involved a retrospective examination of 2,000 case files in the archives of the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital. Out of the 2,000 case files, 650 concerned en

A total of 356 patients with mandibular condyle fractures were studied regarding associated dental injuries. One third of the patients had injured teeth, on average, 3.7 teeth had been injured per accident. Dental traumas were distributed equally between the anterior (incisors and canines) and posterior teeth (premolars and molars) in both jaws. In unilateral condylar fracture cases maxillary dental injuries involved more often premolars and/or molars of the fracture side than those of the nonfracture side. The mean number of dental traumas in the mandible was higher in cases of simultaneous m
