Socket grafting with the use of autologous bone: an experimental study in the dog.

BACKGROUND: studies in humans and animals have shown that following tooth removal (loss), the alveolar ridge becomes markedly reduced. Attempts made to counteract such ridge diminution by installing implants in the fresh extraction sockets were not successful, while socket grafting with anorganic bovine bone mineral prevented ridge contraction. AIM: to examine whether grafting of the alveolar socket with the use of chips of autologous bone may allow ridge preservation following tooth extraction. METHODS: in five beagle dogs, the distal roots of the third and fourth mandibular premolars were

[Treatment options of missing teeth resulting from hypodontia. Literature overview I].

Nowadays there is an increased need to identify genetic polimorphisms, the underlying genetic factors of hypodontia. This article aims to describe the genetic components of hypodontia, the most frequent congenital tooth development disorder, as well as its interdisciplinary treatment. Congenitally missing teeth may cause serious emotional and physical problems particularly during adolescence. To prevent this, the early diagnosis and the development of definitive treatment plan are vital. In this work the interdisciplinary management involving a dental team plays a crucial role. The most import

Cri du Chat syndrome: a case report.

Cri du Chat Syndrome occurs as a result of a partial deletion in the short arm of chromosome 5. Among the consequent abnormalities are low birth weight, a striking catlike cry in infancy, mental retardation, epicanthal folds, hypertelorism and dental malocclusions. This paper presents a case report on the dental treatment of a 23-year-old patient who received multidisciplinary treatment, including special education and precocious stimulation for carriers of this syndrome.

Medical grade calcium sulfate hemihydrate in healing of human extraction sockets: clinical and histological observations at 3 months.

BACKGROUND: Following tooth extraction, remodeling and resorption of the alveolar bone at the extraction site characterize wound healing. This produces a reduction in ridge volume and difficulties in delayed placement of implants in an ideal position. Medical grade calcium sulfate hemihydrate (MGCSH) has been proposed as a graft material in extraction sockets to minimize the reduction in ridge volume. The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of MGCSH on the histopathologic pattern of intrasocket regenerated bone and to evaluate histologically the healed MGCSH grafted extra

The regulation of bone resorption in tooth formation and eruption processes in mouse alveolar crest devoid of cathepsin k.

Osteoclastic bone resorption has recently been implicated in the tooth formation and eruption in alveolar bone. Cathepsin K (CK) is a cysteine proteinase expressed predominantly in osteoclasts and is believed to play a critical role in degradation of bone matrix proteins. Here we present evidence that the alveolar bone resorption is essential for the tooth formation and that eruption proceeds normally in CK-deficient (CK-/-) mice. Radiographic and histological analyses revealed that the alveolar bone from these animals had no significant abnormalities during the tooth development between 5 and

Repair potential in localized juvenile periodontitis. A case in point.

An aggressive form of localized juvenile periodontitis (LJP) in a 12-year old West African female is reported. The case was treated with scaling, root planing, debridement, and tetracycline therapy, which resulted in complete resolution of the disease, including elimination of periodontal inflammation, regeneration of lost periodontal structures, and spontaneous repositioning of teeth that had pathologically migrated. A hopelessly involved mandibular right first molar was successfully replaced by an incompletely developed maxillary third molar tooth bud whose roots and pulp structure continued

Dental implants as strategic supplementary abutments for implant-tooth-supported telescopic crown-retained maxillary dentures: a retrospective follow-up study for up to 9 years.

PURPOSE: The aim of this retrospective study was to present the results of implants and natural teeth used as combined abutments to support maxillary telescopic prostheses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 1997 and 2004, 22 patients with residual maxillary teeth underwent prosthodontic rehabilitation with supplementary implant placement of implant-tooth-supported telescopic prostheses. A total of 60 supplementary implants (mean: 2.9 implants; SD: 1.6; range: 1 to 5 per patient) were placed in strategic position and connected with 48 natural abutment teeth (mean: 2.2 teeth; SD: 0.9; range: 1 to

Feasibility and Preliminary Efficacy of α-Calcium Sulfate Hemihydrate in Socket Preservation: Protocol for a Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Tooth extraction procedures often lead to bone resorption, which can have adverse effects on the dimensions of the alveolar ridge. Research has shown that socket preservation techniques using bone graft substitutes can effectively minimize early bone loss in such cases. α-calcium sulfate hemihydrate (α-CSH) has garnered significant attention as a potential bone graft material due to its favorable properties, including osteoconductivity, angiogenic potential, and biocompatibility. Considering these facts, we developed a preliminary protocol for applying α-CSH in addressing alveolar

Role of systemic and local administration of selective inhibitors of cyclo-oxygenase 1 and 2 in an experimental model of periodontal disease in rats.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Periodontal disease is an inflammatory condition of tooth-supporting tissues. Arachidonic acid metabolites have been implicated in development of periodontal disease, especially those derived from the cyclo-oxygenase (COX) pathway. This study investigated the role of inhibitors of cyclo-oxygenases (COX-1 and COX-2) in a model of periodontal disease in rats. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A ligature was placed around the molar of rats. Losses of fiber attachment and of alveolar bone were measured morphometrically in histologically prepared sections. Infiltration of cells into

Oral-health-related quality of life among undergraduate dental students with Tooth Wear.

BACKGROUND: Tooth Wear results from multiple mechanisms, including erosion (chemical loss), attrition (tooth-to-tooth contact), and abrasion (mechanical wear), represent an emerging concern among young individuals (Li MHM, Bernabé E. J Dent. 55:48-53, 2016). The severity of Tooth Wear can be measured using the Tooth Wear Index, which scores each tooth surface from 0 to 4. With time this mechanism can proceed to visible lesions on the tooth surface; these lesions may cause dysfunction, increase sensitivity, and disfigure facial appearance. Understanding the role of target population, behavioral

Volumetric Analysis of Ridge Preservation Using Bio-Oss® Collagen: A Retrospective Cohort Study Based on CBCT and Panoramic Radiographs.

Background and Objectives: Tooth loss affects quality of life and chewing ability and is associated with natural ridge resorption after extraction. Implants are a viable option for the anchorage of removable or fixed prostheses. Successful implant placement requires adequate bone availability. To minimize bone loss after extraction and to avoid the need for additional augmentation before implant placement, ridge preservation techniques are employed. The aim of this study was to assess volume changes in extraction sockets after ridge preservation with a collagen-based bovine/porcine xenogenic m…

Foxi3GFP and Foxi3CreER mice allow identification and lineage labeling of pharyngeal arch ectoderm and endoderm, and tooth and hair placodes.

BACKGROUND: FOXI3 is a forkhead family transcription factor that is expressed in the progenitors of craniofacial placodes, epidermal placodes, and the ectoderm and endoderm of the pharyngeal arch region. Loss of Foxi3 in mice and pathogenic Foxi3 variants in dogs and humans cause a variety of craniofacial defects including absence of the inner ear, severe truncations of the jaw, loss or reduction in external and middle ear structures, and defects in teeth and hair. RESULTS: To allow for the identification, isolation, and lineage tracing of Foxi3-expressing cells in developing mice, we targete

Peptides from rice endosperm protein restrain periodontal bone loss in mouse model of periodontitis.

OBJECTIVE: Food-derived peptides have been reported to exhibit antibacterial activity against periodontal pathogenic bacteria. However, no effect has been shown on inflammation and bone resorption in periodontal pathology. The overall objective of the current study was to investigate how rice peptides influence biological defense mechanisms against periodontitis-induced inflammatory bone loss, and identify their novel functions as a potential anti-inflammatory drug. DESIGN: The expression of inflammatory and osteoclast-related molecules was examined in mouse macrophage-derived RAW 264.7 cell

External invasive resorption: Case report of a rapidly progressive process in an impacted maxillary canine during orthodontic treatment.

External invasive resorption (EIR) is a type of external resorption that can involve the coronal, middle and apical parts of the root in its advanced stages and results in progressive loss of tooth structure. Common potential predisposing factors for EIR are orthodontic treatment and trauma. The EIR progression rate has not been described previously. This case report describes rapidly progressive EIR in an impacted maxillary canine after surgical exposure and application of directional orthodontic traction over 8 months. The article discusses the etiologies of EIR, the possible reasons for EIR

Advanced Scaffolds for Dental Pulp and Periodontal Regeneration.

No current therapy promotes root canal disinfection and regeneration of the pulp-dentin complex in cases of pulp necrosis. Antibiotic pastes used to eradicate canal infection negatively affect stem cell survival. Three-dimensional easy-to-fit antibiotic-eluting nanofibers, combined with injectable scaffolds, enriched or not with stem cells and/or growth factors, may increase the likelihood of achieving predictable dental pulp regeneration. Periodontitis is an aggressive disease that impairs the integrity of tooth-supporting structures and may lead to tooth loss. The latest advances in membrane…

Augmented BMPRIA-mediated BMP signaling in cranial neural crest lineage leads to cleft palate formation and delayed tooth differentiation.

The importance of BMP receptor Ia (BMPRIa) mediated signaling in the development of craniofacial organs, including the tooth and palate, has been well illuminated in several mouse models of loss of function, and by its mutations associated with juvenile polyposis syndrome and facial defects in humans. In this study, we took a gain-of-function approach to further address the role of BMPR-IA-mediated signaling in the mesenchymal compartment during tooth and palate development. We generated transgenic mice expressing a constitutively active form of BmprIa (caBmprIa) in cranial neural crest (CNC)
