OBJECTIVE: to identify the prevalence of latent tuberculosis in patients with chronic kidney disease on hemodialysis and associated factors.
METHOD: a cross-sectional study conducted with 176 patients with chronic kidney disease on hemodialysis. The tuberculin test was performed with the standardized antigen, distributed by the Brazilian Ministry of Health, and the reading occurred after 72 to 96 hours of the application. A cluster of tuberculosis cases in a rural community in Arkansas persisted from 1991 to 1999. The cluster had 13 members, 11 linked epidemiologically. Old records identified 24 additional patients for 40 linked cases during a 54-year period. Residents of this neighborhood represent a population at high risk who should be considered for tuberculin testing and treatment for latent tuberculosis infection.

Tuberculosis screening is recommended for all health care workers. We evaluated the prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection among 939 hospital workers of Tor Vergata University teaching hospital in Rome, Italy, in the period 2007-2013, by using the QuantiFERON Gold In-Tube (QFT) test. The mean age of subjects tested was 31 years. The prevalence of positive subjects (cut-off 0.35 UI/ml) was 5.5% (46/939) and the mean age of those who tested positive was 39 years. The low rate of positivity may be partly related to the higher reliability of QFT in comparison to tuberculin skin testing.

Mycobacteriosis caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. avium was observed in a parental loft of 70 meat-breed pigeons. It was decided to undertake treatment as the birds represented a substantial value to the owner. A multiagent therapy using azithromycin, marbofloxacin, and ethambutol was administered. After 4 mo of therapy, the desired results were not obtained. At the end of treatment, the birds were in poor general condition, with white blood cells above 20 g/L, and after clutching, 2-yr-old and older birds were euthanatized. BACKGROUND: Children with cancer are immunocompromised with increased susceptibility to infections. We evaluated the burden of tuberculosis in children with cancer.
METHODS: Children with cancer were enrolled and screened for Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection using the tuberculin skin test and enzyme-linked immune absorbent spot (T-SPOT.TB; Oxford Immunotec Ltd, Oxford, United Kingdom). The clinical picture of tuberculous peritonitis in productive form with formation of an abdominal tumour 18 x 20 cm in dimensions is described. The patient was a boy aged 19 years from rural environment. The diagnosis was based on bacteriological investigations, histological examination and clinical manifestations.
