Hepcidin is the primary regulator of vertebrate iron homeostasis. Its production is stimulated by systemic iron levels and inflammatory signals. Although the role of hepcidin in iron homeostasis is well characterized, its response to pathogenic agents is complex and diverse. In this review, we examine studies that investigate the role of hepcidin in response to infectious agents. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a key factor responsible for the induction of hepcidin expression. During infection, hepcidin-mediated depletion of extracellular iron serves as a protective mechanism against a variety of path

INTRODUCTION: Although vaccines provide a cost-effective solution to vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs), the disease burden of VPDs is still very high in most parts of the world.
METHODS: A population-based observational study was conducted in Shandong province, China, from 2013 to 2017, giving an insight into the epidemiological characteristics and disease burden of seven VPDs. The incidence trend was estimated using the Poisson regression model. The disease burden was calculated using the disability-adjusted life years (DALYs).
RESULTS: Most VPDs included in the China's National Immunizat

Anti-TNFα-antibodies have revolutionized the therapy of inflammatory bowel diseases and other immune-mediated inflammatory diseases. Due to the increasing application of these substances, the Working Group of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases of the Austrian Association of Gastroenterology and Hepatology intended to update their consensus report on the safe use of Infliximab (published in 2010) and to enlarge its scope to cover all anti-TNFα-antibodies. The present consensus report summarizes the current evidence on the safe use of anti-TNFα-antibodies and covers the following topics: general risk o

Screening asylum seekers for infectious diseases is widely performed, but economic evaluations of such are scarce. We performed a policy analysis and economic evaluation of such screening in Germany, and analysed the effect of screening policies on cost differences between federal states. Of the 16 states, screening was compulsory for tuberculosis (TB) in asylum seekers ≥ 16 years of age in all states as well as in children < 16 years of age and pregnant women in six states, hepatitis B and enteropathogens in three, syphilis in two and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in one state. Immigrants may be carriers of infectious diseases because of the prevalence of these diseases in their country of origin, exposure during migration, or conditions during resettlement, with this prevalence being particularly high in sub-Saharan Africans. We performed a retrospective review of 180 sub-Saharan immigrants screened for infectious diseases at an International Health Center from January 2009 to December 2012. At least one pathogenic infectious disease was diagnosed in 72.8% patients: 60.6% latent tuberculosis infection, 36.8% intestinal parasites (intestinal protozoa or helminths), 2

BACKGROUND: Primary myelofibrosis is a chronic myeloproliferative neoplasm that may cause debilitating symptoms, which can be improved with the use of Ruxolitinib, a Janus kinase 2 inhibitor. However, this agent has significant immunomodulatory effects which may increase the risk for infections.
METHODS: We searched the literature and our institutional electronic medical record for reported cases of infections in adult patients on ruxolitinib treatment.
RESULTS: We found 28 cases in our literature search and 4 cases from our Institution for a total of 32 cases. The most common infection was

Although VFR travelers are at risk for acquiring infections and experiencing illness while traveling, many of these diseases are preventable. A comprehensive approach to decreasing their travel-related morbidity requires continued surveillance, data collection, systematic analysis, and action. A review of the literature provides few examples of interventions designed specifically to address VFR travel needs. Given the geographic and cultural diversity of these populations, models grounded in health behavior theory provide the best potential for clinically relevant replication. Outreach aimed a

BACKGROUND: Infectious diseases represent a major component of biological hazards encountered by healthcare workers. Occupational exposure may occur through multiple transmission pathways including airborne particles, direct contact, contaminated environments, or blood exposure accidents. Understanding these mechanisms is essential to guide effective prevention strategies in healthcare settings.
METHODS: This narrative review synthesises current epidemiological data and preventive recommendations regarding occupational infectious risks in healthcare and related professional environments. Majo

We studied current vaccination policies for health-care personnel (HCP) in 34 European countries. All (34) countries have vaccination policies for hepatitis B, 33 countries for influenza, and 22 countries for COVID-19. Vaccination policies for measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella exist in 28, 23, 24, and 26 countries, respectively, and for tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, and poliomyelitis in 21, 23, 23, and 15 countries, respectively. Vaccination policies for hepatitis A exist in 20 countries, and for tuberculosis (BCG vaccine), pneumococcus, herpes zoster, and human papillomavirus in 6, 6,

The coexistence of autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) and primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) is termed AIH-PBC overlap syndrome, a rare but recognized clinical entity. Clinical presentation is often non-specific, including fatigue, myalgias, arthralgias, and cholestatic liver function test (LFT) abnormalities. Diagnosis is based on biochemical, histologic, and immunologic features commonly using the well-established Paris criteria. While the exact etiology is unclear, immune dysregulation triggered by medications may play a role. We present the case of a 51-year-old male patient with hypertension and

BACKGROUND: To control disease outbreaks and promote the prevention of disease, monitoring the burden of infectious illnesses and their epidemiology is essential. Keeping track of changes in disease rates and, more crucially, the effectiveness of control measures like immunization campaigns for the eradication of certain infectious illnesses depends heavily on national surveillance data.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study analyzed national surveillance data to illustrate the evolving epidemiology of reportable infectious diseases in the Najran Health Cluster from 2022 to 2024. For each disease

BACKGROUND: Between 2008 and 2018, persons granted asylum (asylees) increased by 168% in the United States. Asylees are eligible for many of the same domestic benefits as refugees under the US Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP), including health-related benefits such as the domestic medical examination. However, little is known about the health of asylees to guide clinical practice.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional analysis of domestic medical examination data from 9 US sites from 2014 to 2016. We describe and compare demographics and prevalence of several infectious dise

New regulations concerning infectious diseases effective in Poland since 2002 did not changed surveillance of infectious diseases. The most frequent infectious disease as in the previous years was influenza. 228.055 cases were reported (596.5/100,000). Number of foodborne infections and intoxications remains high--26.734 cases (69.0/100,000). 77% of them were caused by Salmonella. In this high number of foodborne infections in 4,492 (16.8%) etiologic factor was not found. In this number Campylobacter infections, rarely tested in Poland may be found. Especially alarming is number of cases of di

Sarcoidosis is a systemic granulomatosis of unknown etiology. Mediastinal lymph node and pulmonary involvement are the most characteristic manifestations. However, bone involvement is rare during sarcoidosis. Herein, we describe an atypical case of sarcoidosis revealed by a severe hypercalcemia and lytic lesions of the skull without pulmonary or mediastinal manifestation. A 53-year-old woman was admitted for symptomatic hypercalcemia of 3.8 mmoL/L. The initial good course after hydration combined with a dose of intravenous zoledronate was followed by a relapse of hypercalcemia. Computed tomogr

INTRODUCTION: In daily practice management of psoriasis, evaluation of risk factors for infections is having a growing influence. Indeed, in psoriatic patients, risk of infections may be due to psoriasis itself, immunomodulatory therapy, and comorbidities that may increase this risk and patient hospitalization.
AREAS COVERED: Given the greater understanding of psoriasis pathogenesis and the increasing number of treatment options, it is particularly important to customize therapy according to each, single patient; psoriasis features and comorbidities are also essential to tailor treatment goal

Glucocorticoid treatment increases the risk of opportunistic infection. Infections that can arise during glucocorticoid use, and for which preventative measures can be taken, include reactivation of latent tuberculosis and hepatitis B, pneumococcal and Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia, influenza, herpes zoster and Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection syndrome. The risk of such infections depends upon the duration of glucocorticoid use and dosage, as well as comorbidity and comedication. It is important to enquire about vaccinations, travel, exposure and previous infections when taking a cas
