Patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) may have airway obstruction at various levels, including the uvula-soft palate complex, base of tongue, and/or possibly other sites. For patients with tongue base and/or laryngeal obstruction, uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP, ppp) will not alleviate the obstruction. Prior authors have proposed that the hyoid bone position as determined by cephalometric x-rays can predict which patients have obstruction at a lower site than the soft palate. In this study, patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome were evaluated with polysomnographic tes…

From April 1971 to October 1984, 71 patients with T1 or T2 tumors of the faucial arch were treated according to the following protocol: Tele … of patients with tumors of the tonsillar region and 41% for those with tumors of the soft palate or uvula. Local control of tonsillar tumors was 98% while that of tumors of the soft palate was 85%. Regional control was 98% for the N0 group and 87% for the N1-3 group. Five cases of soft tissue ulceration were observed, all of which healed spontaneously w …

OBJECTIVE: The acoustic characteristics of voice are determined by the source of the sound and shape of the vocal tract. Various anatomical changes after uvulopalatal flap (UPF) operation can change nasalance and/or other voice characteristics. Our aim was to explore the possible effects of UPF creation on speech nasalance and the resonatory features of the final nasal consonants, and thus voice characteristics.
METHODS: A total of 30 patients (26 males, 4 females) with obstructive sleep apnea who underwent UPF operation were recruited. A Nasometer II 3.4 instrument was used to assess nasalan

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of UPPP combined with an oral appliance (OA) in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS).
METHODS: Forty patients diagnosed with severe OSAHS were randomly divided into two groups: 20 patients in the pure surgery group treated by uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) surgery and the remaining 20 patients in the combined treatment group for the combined application of UPPP and OA. Nocturnal PSG monitoring was performed in postoperative 0.5 and 3.0a. AHI, SaO₂, and sleep structure improvement were calculated to compare

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy and related factors of Z-palatoplasty for treating severe obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS).
METHOD: Thirty-two severe OSAHS patients with Friedman II and III oropharyngeal airway had Z-palatoplasty. Twenty-three patients with modified Mallampti Index (MMI) III-IV had coblation tongue channeling (CTC) simultaneously. The patients were followed up for one year post operatively.
RESULT: After operation, the apnea and hypopnea index (AHI) decreased from (54.74 +/- 20.38)/h to (22.72 +/- 18.36)/h; the lowest artery oxygen saturation (LSaO2 )

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of UPPP on hemorheology in patients with obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS).
METHOD: Thirty patients of moderate or severe OSAHS were randomly selected from February 2004 to February 2006 in our hospital. Among them, 11 cases are moderate OSAHS (AHI<40), 19 cases are severe OSAHS (AHI>40). They were received uvulopalatopharyngoplasty. Whole blood specific viscosity, erythrocytic and erythrocyte aggregation index were detected before and after operation.
RESULT: The values of testing in post operation were significantly lower than that in pre-op

OBJECTIVE: To explore the change of hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal hormone in patients with Obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) by observing the change of Corticotropin (ACTH) and cortisol after Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP).
METHOD: OSAHS patients were monitored by polysomnography (PSG). The ACTH and cortisol levels in plasma were measured by radioimmunoassay before, during and after sleep in pre-operation and six months post-operation. Their correlation were analyzed.
RESULT: The cortisol concentration [ (170.4+/-56.5) microg/L, (252.2+/-62.3) microg/L, (276.9+/-70.4) micr

Taste disorder is a rare complication of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, and may have a significant impact on quality of life. Herein, we report a case of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome in a 51-year-old man who experienced taste disturbance after palatopharyngeal surgery using electrocautery for developing a uvulopalatal flap. Gustatory function test using three-drop-method with solutions of highest concentration was implemented to assess the deficiency of four basic tastes. The results showed deficit of sweet taste associated with phantom of bitter taste. The patient reported constant spontaneou

OBJECTIVES: To describe the results of a 1 phase surgical procedure for the treatment of severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) attributable to tongue base obstruction.
STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: A retrospective nonrandomized study at S Orsola Malpighi University Hospital of Bologna, Italy.
METHODS: Ten male patients affected by severe OSA (mean apnea/hypopnea index [AHI] of 54.7), underwent uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) associated with tongue base reduction and hyoepiglottoplasty (TBRHE). The indications to this surgical procedure were based on the presence of hyolingual abnormalities and a

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of successful laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP) on oral airway resistance (R(OA)) during wakefulness in patients with OSAS. Fifteen healthy subjects (group I) and 25 subjects (group II) with moderately severe or severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) proven by an overnight sleep study and who desired LAUP were enrolled. All underwent an overnight sleep study, pulmonary function testing and measurement of oral airway resistance [R(OA) (including impedance (Zrs), resistance (R) and reactance (X)] measurement by Impulse Oscillometry (

OBJECTIVE: To assess the subjective and objective medium- to long-term results of laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty for snoring.
DESIGN: A nonrandomized, prospective, before-after trial.
SUBJECTS AND INTERVENTIONS: Fourteen patients underwent laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty surgery; 2 surgical techniques, which differ with respect to the mode of midline palatal vaporization, were used.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Subjective analysis included a preoperative and 2 postoperative evaluations of the state of snoring: 4 weeks and 10.1 +/- 7.9 months (mean +/- SD) after completion of last laser treatme

AIM: To assess the effect, if any, of Laser Assisted Uvulo Palatoplasty (LAUP) on the sense of smell and taste.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective study examined 33 patients undergoing LAUP for snoring. Significant sinonasal pathology was excluded in all patients by a complete examination including rigid nasal endoscopy. None of the cases had any systemic illness or drug history that was likely to affect the sense of smell or taste. Twenty-eight patients were male and five female. The mean age was 44 years (range, 25-67). Twelve patients (36%) were regular smokers, and eight patients (24%)

OBJECTIVE: To report nasopharyngeal stenosis following UPPP and our treatment experience.
METHOD: Two clinical cases were analysised.
RESULT: In this paper, the complications were attributed to excessive excision palapharyngeal arches, which juried mucous membrane of nasopharyngeal inlet during the long management time as bleeding and the laser used. Surgical management was performed in two cases. One failed. One was treated successfully by rotation palato-pharyngeal flap and prolonged nasopharyngeal stent, Follow-up 20 months there was no recurrence of stenosis.
CONCLUSION: Surgical correc
