Neurocognitive effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in unipolar and bipolar depression: Findings from an international randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been found to have antidepressant effects and may have beneficial neurocogniti … rticipants. Across the participants, tDCS treatment (high and low dose) resulted in improvements in verbal learning and recall, selective attention, information processing speed, and working memory, which were independent of mood effects. Similar improvements were observed in the subsample of participants with bipolar disorder. There was no observed significant e …

Normalization of mediotemporal and prefrontal activity, and mediotemporal-striatal connectivity, may underlie antipsychotic effects of cannabidiol in psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence suggests that cannabidiol (CBD), a non-intoxicating ingredient present in cannabis extract, has an antipsychotic effect in people with established psychosis. However, the effect of CBD on the neurocognitive mechanisms underlying psychosis is unknown. METHODS: Patients with established psychosis on standard antipsychotic treatment were studied on separate days at least one week apart, to investigate the effects of a single dose of orally administered CBD (600 mg) compared to a matched placebo (PLB), using a double-blind, randomized, PLB-controlled, repeated-measures

Estrogen therapy selectively enhances prefrontal cognitive processes: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study with functional magnetic resonance imaging in perimenopausal and recently postmenopausal women.

OBJECTIVE: Estrogen therapy (ET) seems to differentially effect cognitive processes in younger versus older postmenopausal women, suggesting a window of opportunity when ET is most beneficial. Cognitive improvement in younger postmenopausal women has been attributed to ET's influence on hot flushes and sleep, but empiric examination of the mediating role of menopause symptoms versus direct effects of ET on the brain is limited. DESIGN: In a double-blind trial, 52 women were randomly assigned to estradiol 0.05 mg/day (n = 26) or placebo transdermal patches (n = 26) for 12 weeks. Women complete

Impact Evaluation of Patient-Centered, Community-Engaged Health Modules for Homeless Pregnant Women.

PURPOSE: Pregnant women who experience homelessness are at a greater risk for poor birth outcomes than the general population. This pilot study describes results of a service-learning program informed by previously identified unmet perinatal health needs. In this patient-centered service-learning program, medical students partnered with homeless women currently residing in a shelter in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. METHODS: Medical students in the Health Advocacy in Pregnancy and Infancy (HAPI) project at the Medical College of Wisconsin developed and taught 6 service-learning modules to shelter resi

Written lists as mediating stimuli in the matching-to-sample performances of individuals with mental retardation.

Students with mental retardation learned to write lists in order to perform a matching task that they could not do otherwise. After an initial assessment phase, reinforcement was arranged in the computerized tasks to follow selection of the six pictures that were identical to those in the six-picture samples presented. In Study 1, even though the participants wrote a list of the names of the six sample pictures on each trial, read a list, or did both, they often made errors when a brief delay preceded picture selection. In contrast, performance was nearly perfect when a list was written, read,

Investigating semantic memory impairments: the contribution of semantic priming.

The semantic priming task is a valuable tool in the investigation of semantic memory impairments in patients with acquired disorders of language. This is because priming performance reflects automatic or implicit access to semantic information, unlike most other tests of semantic knowledge, which rely on explicit, voluntary access. Priming results are important for two main reasons: First, normal priming results may be observed in patients who perform poorly on other semantic memory tests, enabling us to distinguish between loss of, or damage to, information in semantic memory, and voluntary a

Communication interventions for autism spectrum disorder in minimally verbal children.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has an estimated prevalence of around 1.7% of the population. People with ASD often also have language difficulties, and about 25% to 30% of children with ASD either fail to develop functional language or are minimally verbal. The ability to communicate effectively is an essential life skill, and difficulties with communication can have a range of adverse outcomes, including poorer academic achievement, behavioural difficulties and reduced quality of life. Historically, most studies have investigated communication interventions for ASD in verbal child

Silent coach: The role of inner speech in learning and performing new chunked actions.

Many people use inner speech (IS), the internal language, for self-guidance, planning, and simulating conversations. Research suggests it serves as a cognitive tool, primarily in executive functions, but its role may extend to other cognitive domains. This study investigates whether IS contributes to action learning and, therefore, execution. We examined whether observing novel, sequential, and non-meaningful actions would engage IS to support their encoding. To test this, participants observed actions to be learned while continuously repeating a syllable (articulatory suppression, AS) during

Prosodic and Linguistic Features of Child-Directed Speech in Word Learning Contexts: A Comparison Between Preterm and Full-Term Children.

BACKGROUND: Caregiver-child interactions, and specifically child-directed speech, play a central role in early language acquisition by scaffolding children's attentional and lexical development. The features and developmental effects of child-directed speech may vary depending on the child's developmental status and communicative needs, especially in clinical risk conditions such as preterm birth. AIMS: This study examined maternal child-directed speech in a semi-structured context, focusing on prosodic cues (mean pitch, pitch range, and speech rate) and structural features (lexical diversity

Symbolated texts as an assistive technology: Exploring the impact on reading comprehension.

BACKGROUND: It is widely assumed that pairing graphic symbols with text supports individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in accessing written content. As a result, these symbolated texts are often used as an assistive technology to increase text accessibility. Unfortunately, there is little empirical evidence that symbolated texts improve reading comprehension. Research with beginning and struggling readers suggests that pairing text with any type of image makes understanding text more difficult and impedes reading growth by distracting individuals' visual attention

Subcortical brain iron and its link to verbal memory in children with developmental language disorder.

Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is a common neurodevelopmental condition characterized by significant difficulty with language learning, comprehension, and expression. The neurocognitive bases of DLD are underspecified but are thought to be related, in part, to altered basal ganglia (BG). The BG are known to have a high level of brain iron, which contributes to myelination and dopaminergic pathways among other physiological mechanisms. In this study, we investigated whether a brain iron imbalance might contribute to the altered BG function that characterizes individuals with DLD. Using a

Transcranial direct-current stimulation of core language areas facilitates novel word acquisition.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive neuromodulation technique that can alter the state of the stimulated brain area and thereby affect neurocognitive processes and resulting behavioural performance. Previous studies using tDCS to address the language function have shown disparate results, particularly with respect to language learning and word acquisition. To fill this gap, this study aimed at systematically addressing the effects of tDCS of core left-hemispheric language cortices on the brain mechanisms underpinning two main neurocognitive strategies of word learn

Retrieval practice and word learning in children who are hard of hearing.

PURPOSE: Many children who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) show poorer auditory word-learning skills than children with typical hearing (TH). The goal of this study was to test the effect of retrieval practice on word learning in children who are hard of hearing (HH). METHOD: Twenty-six TH children and 16 children who are HH completed a speech perception and a vocabulary test, and a rapid word-learning game to learn new words under no retrieval, immediate retrieval, and spaced retrieval conditions. RESULT: Linear mixed-effect models revealed that learning condition and time predicted 48%

Right-lateralized frontal activation underlies successful updating of verbal working memory in adolescents with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder.

Adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) exhibit altered frontal lobe activation during working memory (WM) processing despite relatively intact WM updating ability. To determine whether this alteration reflects compensation and is also present in adolescents, this study examined prefrontal activation during WM updating in adolescents with ASD using functional near-infrared spectroscopy. Eighteen adolescents with high-functioning ASD and 18 typically developing (TD) adolescents aged 11-18 years successfully underwent a verbal n-back paradigm with a WM (i.e., 2-back) and a control (i.e., 0-ba

Individual differences in orthographic priming relate to phonological decoding skill in adults.

We examined relationships between individual differences in orthographic priming and a battery of measures assessing orthographic processing ability, reading history, current reading ability, and verbal intelligence in university students. Pronounceable and unpronounceable nonword primes preceded word and nonword targets. Individual differences in nonword reading skill and other measures of reading and spelling ability were associated with the degree of orthographic priming. Individuals with less phonological decoding skill benefited more from anagram primes for word targets preceded by unpron

A descriptive study examining phonological awareness and literacy development in children with Down syndrome.

OBJECTIVE AND METHOD: This article describes the profiles of a cohort of 77 New Zealand children with Down syndrome (aged between 5 and 14 years) in areas of particular importance to reading development, namely phonological awareness, word level reading and letter knowledge. Assessment of reading accuracy and comprehension of connected text, as well as further phonological awareness knowledge, was measured in 25 of the more advanced readers in this cohort. RESULTS: The findings showed the expected development with increasing age for letter knowledge, phoneme level awareness and reading tasks.

Developmental dyslexia in a regular orthography: can the reading profile be reduced to strategic control?

In languages with regular orthographies, the identification of different forms of reading impairment (such as surface or phonological dyslexia) has proved elusive. Alternatively, it has been proposed that different patterns of errors depend upon strategic choices on the part of the reader. The present study aimed to test this strategic interpretation by evaluating the effectiveness of instructions to read quickly (or accurately) in modifying the reading rate and types of errors of dyslexic children. Further, drawing on an error classification based on the contrast between sounding-out behaviou

Implicit memory function in fibromyalgia syndrome.

The study investigated implicit memory function in fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) and its association with clinical parameters. Implicit memory refers to the influence of past experience on current behavior without conscious awareness of these experiences. Eighteen FMS patients and 25 healthy individuals accomplished a word-stem completion task. As possible factors mediating the expected impairment, pain severity, emotional disorders, and medication were taken into account. The patients displayed markedly reduced task performance and higher levels of depression and anxiety. Among the clinical fea
