Postural asymmetry reduction by vestibular caloric stimulation in left hemiparetic patients.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of caloric vestibular stimulation on the postural sway characteristics of hemiparetic patients. Two groups of 15 hemiparetic patients each (right and left) were compared to a group of 15 control subjects. Hemiplegic patients were selected for the study if they showed ability to stand without external support for at least 30 seconds. Posturographic evaluation was performed on a statokinesimetric platform just before and after a cold contralesional ear irrigation (20 degrees C) during 60 seconds. Two quantitative parameters were analysed:

Ototoxicity and topical eardrops.

Topical aminoglycoside ear drops are theoretically acknowledged to be potentially ototoxic when administered in the presence of a tympanic membrane perforation. Although the development of clinical ototoxicity appears to be rare, nine well-documented and incontrovertible cases (12 ears in total) of iatrogenic topical vestibulotoxicity are presented, representing the largest series in the English language world literature to date. All patients were treated with the topical gentamicin-containing ear drops Garasone, (betamethasone sodium phosphate and gentamicin sulphate) for prolonged periods. T

Prenatal exposure to alcohol affects the ability to maintain postural balance.

Prenatal exposure to alcohol is known to affect gross motor functioning. Animal studies have shown that balance is particularly affected, and there is some evidence that similar deficits exist in alcohol-exposed children. In the current study, postural balance, or the ability to maintain equilibrium, was assessed in a group of alcohol-exposed children (ALC group; n = 11) and controls (NC group; n = 11) individually matched for age and sex. Balance was measured across six conditions designed to systematically manipulate or eliminate visual or somatosensory information. Equilibrium and strategy

Neurobiological responses of fish to altered gravity conditions: a review.

In vertebrates (including man), altered gravitational environments such as weightlessness can induce malfunctions of the inner ears, based on an irregular dislocation of the inner ear otoliths from the corresponding sensory epithelia. This dislocation leads to an illusionary tilt, since the otolithic inputs are not confirmed by the other sensory organs, which results in an intersensory conflict. Vertebrates in the orbit therefore face severe orientation problems. In humans, the intersensory conflict may additionally lead to a malaise, commonly referred to as space motion sickness (SMS). During

Reduction in posterior cerebral artery blood flow velocity during caloric vestibular stimulation.

Transcranial Doppler (TCD) sonography was performed to assess the differential effects of caloric vestibular stimulation on cerebral blood flow (CBF) to the vestibular [middle cerebral artery (MCA)] and the visual [posterior cerebral artery (PCA)] cortices in 15 healthy volunteers with eyes closed. Caloric irrigation caused a sensation of rotation and nystagmus and not only increased velocity in the MCA (2.7 +/- 3.3%) but also, simultaneously, decreased velocity in the PCA (4.2 +/- 6.2%, p < 0.001 vs. MCA). CBF changes indicated by changes in velocity through the MCA and PCA may reflect functi

Inertial representation of angular motion in the vestibular system of rhesus monkeys. II. Otolith-controlled transformation that depends on an intact cerebellar nodulus.

1. We recently studied the spatial representation of angular motion signals in rhesus monkeys by examining the orientation of postrotatory vestibuloocular responses during tilt of the head and body relative to gravity after constant-velocity rotation about an earth-vertical axis. We have reported that low-frequency angular motion signals in the vestibuloocular reflex (VOR) of rhesus monkeys are spatially transformed such that they remain invariant relative to gravity. In the present study we examine the properties of these inertial vestibular signals by employing similar stimulation conditions

Evaluation of vestibular and visual oculomotor function.

The visual system interacts synergistically with the vestibular system. A normally functioning vestibulo-ocular reflex is necessary but not sufficient for optimum visual acuity during head motion. Studies of dynamic visual acuity, the acuity achieved during relative motion of visual targets or of the observer, indicate that motion of images on the retina markedly compromises vision. The vestibulo-ocular reflex normally provides a substantial measure of stabilization of the retina during head movements, but purely vestibular compensatory eye movements are not sufficiently precise for optimal vi

[Changes in vestibular function and furosemide test after experimental endolymphatic hydrops in guinea pigs].

The present study reports a successful anial model of endolymphatic hydrops (EH) in guinea pigs (n = 48) through a surgical obliteration of the endolymphatic sac and duct. Electronystagmography was calibrated by optokinetic nystagmus. During the formation of EH the vestibular functions (n = 16) were dynamically observed by ratation test. After eight weeks (n = 25) the furosemide tests with different doses were carried out by sinusoidal angular acceleration test. The results showed that the excitability of vestibular function in the operated ears was enhanced for the first week after operation,

[Vestibular function in calcium and phosphate metabolism disorders in chronic renal failure].

45 patients with chronic renal failure (25 dialysed and 20 undialysed) were examined for function of vestibular organ and 35 patients with chronic renal failure treated by diet and drugs were examined for hearing acuity by pure tone audiometry and above-threshold audiometry. All patients serum sample's were examined for calcium, inorganic phosphates and uric acid. The examination revealed the damage of vestibular organ in 84.4 per cent of patients and statistically significant increase of parathormone serum concentration in patients with central type of damage. The hearing loss was found in 51

Role of vestibular and neck inputs for the perception of object motion in space.

UNLABELLED: The contribution of vestibular and neck inputs to the perception of visual object motion in space was studied in the absence of a visual background (in the dark) in normal human subjects (Ss). Measures of these contributions were obtained by means of a closed loop nulling procedure; Ss fixed their eyes on a luminous spot (object) and nulled its actual or apparent motion in space during head rotation in space (vestibular stimulus) and/or trunk rotation relative to the head (neck stimulus) with the help of a joystick. Vestibular and neck contributions were expressed in terms of gain

Pharmacological interventions for motion sickness: cardiovascular effects.

Motion sickness (MS) was provoked in healthy volunteers subjected to simultaneous rotation through the vertical axis with head movements (HM). Arterial blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR) and forearm blood flows (BF) were intermittently monitored. Forearm BF was measured by venous occluding plethysmography. Rotation at 20 rpm and cyclic HM were continued for 10 min or until the subject requested cessation of HM because of imminent emesis. There were no consistent changes in BP or HR, but marked increases in BF were observed with MS. There was an inverse correlation between duration of HM tole

[Clinical picture and pathogenesis of Jacksonian seizures in cerebral arteriovenous aneurysms].

The results of combined examinations of 26 patients with arteriovenous aneurysms in the brain are presented. The patients constituted two groups in one of which the aneurysm took a "neoplastic", and in the other a "vascular" course. The morphological and clinical forms of the aneurysm course that depended on the localization and size of the anomaly are described in detail. The brachial and crural types of Jacksonian seizures are specified. In the neoplastic form of the aneurysms (contrary to the vascular one) these seisures were the leading clinical symptom at the disease onset and had a compl

Space motion sickness.

Space motion sickness, presumably triggered by sudden entry into a weightless environment, occurred with unexpected frequency and severity among astronauts who flew the Skylab missions. Recovery from symptoms was complete within 3-5 days, and as revealed by the Skylab M131 Human Vestibular Function Experiment, all crewmembers were immune to experimentally induced motion sickness after mission day 8. This syndrome has been recognized as a possible threat to the early mission well-being and operational efficiency of at least some individuals who will fly space missions in the future. The causes

Self-motion magnitude estimation during linear oscillation: changes with head orientation and following fatigue.

Two types of experiments concerning estimated magnitude of self-motion during exposure to linear oscillation on a parallel swing are described in this paper. Experiment I examined changes in magnitude estimation as a function of variation of the subject's head orientation, and Experiments II a, II b, and II c assessed changes in magnitude estimation performance following exposure to sustained, "intense" linear oscillation (fatigue-inducing stimulation). The subjects' performance was summarized employing Stevens' power law (R = k . Sn, where R is perceived self-motion magnitude, k is a constant

Sensorimotor treatment of chronic schizophrenics.

A pilot study, a sensorimotor treatment program, was conducted that involved five subjects. The subjects ranged in age from 23 to 49 and all carried a diagnosis of schizophrenia. Length of hospitalization ranged from 3 years to 30 years with only brief interruptions. Patients were evaluated before treatment, after six weeks of treatment, and six weeks after termination of treatment. Evaluation procedures used were: DRAW-A-PERSON Test; NOSIE; Posture Evaluation; and the Step Test. Results showed a decrease in overt psychotic behavior that did not last after sensorimotor treatment was discontinu
