Ocular Factors Affecting AI Diagnosis in Diabetic Retinopathy Screening for Resource-Limited Regions: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the leading cause of vision loss among working-age adults worldwide. AI-assisted automated image reading has effectively alleviated the human resource challenges in large-scale remote screenings, yet there is limited analysis on the impact of complex ocular factors on the diagnostic efficacy of AI. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to systematically analyze the impact of multiple ocular factors on the diagnostic efficacy of the EVisionAI system in detecting DR and vision-threatening diabetic retinopathy (VTDR) during large-scale screening of residents with d

Retinopathy of prematurity in a tertiary care hospital in eastern Nepal.

World Health Organization's Vision 2020 program has recognized Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) as an important cause of childhood blindness in industrialized and developing countries. In the last few years, it has been identified in many under developed countries as well, as a result of improved neonatal intensive care. In Nepal, ROP screening is carried out in a few tertiary hospitals but there is no published data on this disease. The purpose of this study was to find out the incidence, severity and risk factors of ROP among infants screened in a tertiary care hospital in the Eastern Region

Validation of DIGIROP models and decision support tool for prediction of treatment for retinopathy of prematurity on a contemporary Swedish cohort.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is currently diagnosed through repeated eye examinations to find the low percentage of infants that fulfil treatment criteria to reduce vision loss. A prediction model for severe ROP requiring treatment that might sensitively and specifically identify infants that develop severe ROP, DIGIROP-Birth, was developed using birth characteristics. DIGIROP-Screen additionally incorporates first signs of ROP in different models over time. The aim was to validate DIGIROP-Birth, DIGIROP-Screen and their decision support tool on a contemporary Swedish coho

Optic nerve elongation during fronto-facial surgery for Crouzon syndrome: 3D quantification and clinical implications.

OBJECTIVE: Fronto-facial monobloc advancement with internal distraction (FFMBA) is a key procedure in the management of syndromic craniosynostoses. FFMBA involves circumferential dissection and linear enlargement of the orbit, potentially leading to mechanical stress on the optic nerve (ON). Several reports of transient vision loss during the distraction process led us to investigate ON shape modifications during facial advancement, with the aim to potentially refine current clinical guidelines on postoperative management and the distraction schedule. METHODS: Twenty-six patients with Crouzon

Tissue-derived microparticles reduce inflammation and fibrosis in cornea wounds.

Biological materials derived from the extracellular matrix (ECM) of tissues serve as scaffolds for rebuilding tissues and for improved wound healing. Cornea trauma represents a wound healing challenge as the default repair pathway can result in fibrosis and scar formation that limit vision. Effective treatments are needed to reduce inflammation, promote tissue repair, and retain the tissue's native transparency and vision capacity. Tissue microparticles derived from cornea, cartilage and lymph nodes were processed and screened in vitro for their ability to reduce inflammation in ocular surface

Evaluation of a gaze-controlled vision enhancement system for reading in visually impaired people.

People with low vision, especially those with Central Field Loss (CFL), need magnification to read. The flexibility of Electronic Vision Enhancement Systems (EVES) offers several ways of magnifying text. Due to the restricted field of view of EVES, the need for magnification is conflicting with the need to navigate through text (panning). We have developed and implemented a real-time gaze-controlled system whose goal is to optimize the possibility of magnifying a portion of text while maintaining global viewing of the other portions of the text (condition 1). Two other conditions were implemen
