OBJECTIVE: To highlight the difficulty involved in making a diagnosis of systemic mastocytosis (SM) when it manifests solely as osteoporosis.
METHODS: We present a detailed case report and review the literature regarding the work-up of secondary osteoporosis and the diagnosis and treatment of SM. Other cases of SM presenting as osteoporosis in male patients are also described.
RESULTS: A 35-year-old man presented with back pain after weight lifting and was diagnosed with a T7 vertebral compression fracture. A dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry scan resulted in a T-score of -3.2 in the spine an

BACKGROUND: The majority of multiple vertebral fractures (MVFs) occur under high-energy conditions; however, some cases occurring under minor-energy conditions exist. Fractures in successive vertebrae (continuous type) and in skipped vertebrae (discontinuous type) can exist.
PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to compare and evaluate the cause, level of injury, and relationship to osteoporosis between continuous and discontinuous MVFs.
METHODS: We studied 77 subjects (173 vertebrae) who had presented with acute back pain between September 2007 and April 2010 and who received diagnoses o

BACKGROUND: Ankle fractures are not typically considered osteoporotic fractures. However, bone quality in patients with low trauma ankle fractures has not been explored.
METHODS: Women with (n = 17) and without (n = 112) a history of low trauma ankle fracture after menopause had areal bone mineral density measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry, trabecular (Tb) and cortical volumetric bone mineral density, and Tb microarchitecture measured by high-resolution peripheral computed tomography of the radius and tibia. Finite element analysis was performed to estimate bone stiffness.

Low body mass index (BMI) is a recognized risk factor for fragility fracture, whereas obesity is widely believed to be protective. As part of a clinical audit of guidance from the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), we have documented the prevalence of obesity and morbid obesity in postmenopausal women younger than 75 years of age presenting to our Fracture Liaison Service (FLS). Between January 2006 and December 2007, 1005 postmenopausal women aged less than 75 years with a low-trauma fracture were seen in the FLS. Of these women, 805 (80%) underwent assessment of bon

The Metriscan (Alara Inc, CA) is a compact digital radiographic absorptiometry device capable of determining phalangeal bone mineral density in arbitrary units (BMD(au)) from the second phalanges of the middle three digits. We have examined the utility and the in vitro and in vivo performances of the Metriscan, and established triage thresholds based on the UK's National Osteoporosis Society guidelines on peripheral densitometry. 170 white female participants (70 osteoporotic and 100 non-osteoporotic at the hip or spine) aged between 55 years and 70 years were recruited from patients attending

The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is any significant bone loss of the ulna and radius following acute tendon-artery-nerve clean-cut injuries at the wrist level which were repaired and rehabilitated by early passive mobilisation. Fifty-eight patients who underwent such operation were enrolled in this study. Patients in Group I (n=28) had primary tendon repairs alone, in Group II (n=15) primary tendon and nerve repairs and in Group III (n=15) primary tendon, nerve and artery repairs. Bone mineral density (BMD) measurements of the ulna and radius were obtained during the firs

OBJECTIVE: Patients with Turner syndrome (TS) have altered growth and increased risk of osteoporosis due to oestrogen deficiency and possibly a host of other factors. Thus, TS patients have a 4.9-fold increased risk of femoral neck fractures. Most patients are treated with oestrogen during puberty and adolescence to facilitate pubertal development and prevent secondary osteoporosis. The geometry of the hip is a predictor for hip fractures independent of bone mineral density (BMD). The purpose of the present study was to investigate the variation of the geometry of the hip in patients with TS i

Bone densitometry has become the "gold standard" in osteoporosis diagnosis and treatment evaluation. It has also become more and more common to perform a second dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) measurement to monitor bone mineral density (BMD) status or the effect of therapeutic intervention. When a second measurement is performed on a patient, the clinician needs to distinguish between a true change in BMD and a random fluctuation related to variability in the measurement procedure. The reproducibility of DXA measurements is claimed to be good. Such variability is due to multiple causes

INTRODUCTION: Long bone structural parameters such as cross-sectional area or area moments of inertia are useful measures of long bone mechanical properties. We implemented a three-scan densitometric method to measure structural parameters in long bones of the lower leg in vivo. The validated method was applied to investigate the relationship between activity level, age, and long bone structural parameters in women.
METHODS: An aluminum phantom was used to estimate in vivo setup accuracy. In vivo precision was determined by same-day repeated measures on human subjects. For the activity study,

The ability to assess a patient's risk of fracture is fundamental to the clinical role of bone densitometry. Fracture discrimination is quantified by the relative risk (RR), defined as the increased risk of fracture for a 1 standard deviation decrease in bone mineral density (BMD). The larger the value of RR, the more effective measurements are at identifying patients at risk of fracture. Epidemiological studies show that RR values for predicting the risk of any fracture are approximately the same for all BMD measurement sites. In this study, we show theoretically that this interesting observa

OBJECTIVE: In adults, interview methods may detect eating-disordered behaviors more accurately than self-report methods. However, no studies have investigated the relationships between interview and self-report assessments in children. We compared results from the Eating Disorder Examination adapted for Children (ChEDE) with the Adolescent version of the Questionnaire on Eating and Weight Patterns (QEWP-A) and with the Children's Eating Attitude Test (ChEAT) in a nontreatment sample of overweight and normal weight children.
METHOD: The ChEDE, QEWP-A, and ChEAT were administered to 46 overweig

UNLABELLED: Studies have examined factors related to BMD in older white, but not black, men. We measured BMD in older white and black men and examined factors related to racial differences in BMD. Black men had significantly higher adjusted BMD at all sites. These results may explain, in part, the lower incidence of fractures in older black men.
INTRODUCTION: Several studies have examined factors associated with bone mineral density (BMD)in older men. None, however, have had sufficient numbers of black men to allow for meaningful comparisons by race.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 503 whi
