Do carbon dioxide, volatile organic compounds and atmospheric pressure affect the cognitive performance of occupants in indoor environments? Results of a large-scale experiment with simulated flights.

BACKGROUND: Indoor air quality, especially carbon dioxide (CO2) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), has been linked to cognitive impairment in previous studies, even below guideline levels. Most previous studies employed small cross-over designs and varied only one indoor air factor. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the influence of various combinations of indoor air parameters at typical and elevated levels on cognitive performance. METHODS: We conducted a randomized controlled trial with 398 healthy adults aged 18-69 years. Participants were randomly assigned to 11 groups and

Annoyance from Road Traffic, Trains, Airplanes and from Total Environmental Noise Levels.

There is a lack of studies assessing the exposure-response relationship between transportation noise and annoyance in North America. Our aims were to investigate the prevalence of noise annoyance induced by road traffic, trains and airplanes in relation to distance to transportation noise sources, and to total environmental noise levels in Montreal, Canada; annoyance was assessed as noise-induced disturbance. A telephone-based survey among 4336 persons aged >18 years was conducted. Exposure to total environmental noise (A-weighted outdoor noise levels-LAeq24h and day-evening-night equivalent n

Professional aircrews' attitudes toward infectious diseases and aviation medical issues.

INTRODUCTION: Air carrier and professional corporate aircrews provide a unique and highly distinct population in which to examine potential transport and transmission of infectious diseases (ID). This study sought to assess frequency of flying while acutely ill, identify clinical triggers in self-grounding, determine employer support for self-grounding, examine rates of influenza vaccination, and identify unmet needs for current information on ID issues related to extensive travel required of professional aircrews. METHODS: Anonymous questionnaires were completed by select European mainline,

Assessing the risk of importing dengue and chikungunya viruses to the European Union.

OBJECTIVE: A competent vector of dengue and chikungunya viruses, Aedes albopictus, is present in Europe. As a first step towards assessing the likelihood of local transmission of these viruses in Europe, we estimated the number of viremic person-days among air-travellers arriving in the European Union (EU). METHODS: For dengue, we developed a Monte Carlo model with the following parameters: probability distributions based on quarterly incidences in endemic countries (years 2003-2007), passenger flow from endemic to EU countries (year 2006), duration of viremia, probability of being viremic up

Public health response to imported case of poliomyelitis, Australia, 2007.

Australia, along with 36 other countries in the Western Pacific Region, was declared free of poliomyelitis by the World Health Organization in October 2000. Yet, the persistence of wild poliovirus in the 4 remaining polio-endemic countries-Afghanistan, India, Nigeria, and Pakistan-poses a risk for its importation into all countries declared polio free. We describe the public health response and outcomes resulting from the importation of a wild poliovirus infection in Melbourne, Australia, in July 2007. This response, based on an assessment of the risk for transmission, included offering vaccin

[Hearing loss by continuous exposure to high sound pressure among maintenance workers at a Brazilian Air Force helicopters unity].

Continuous exposure to high sound pressure in aeronautical workers can be associated with inner ear hearing loss. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence of deafness among all maintenance workers from a Brazilian Air Force helicopter unit. The methods included the application of individual questionnaires and audiometric tests. The results showed a high prevalence (32.4%) of hearing loss related to time on the job (p < 0.05; RP = 2.11; 95%CI: 1.03-4.32) and the 41-50-year age bracket (p = 0.00; RP < 3.94; 95%CI: 2.04-7.62). No influence was found from selected variables that might result in

The LONFLIT4-Concorde--Sigvaris Traveno Stockings in Long Flights (EcoTraS) Study: a randomized trial.

UNLABELLED: The LONFLIT1/2 studies have established that in high-risk subjects after long ( > 10 hours) flights the incidence of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) may be between 4% and 6%. The LONFLIT4 study was aimed at evaluating the control of edema and DVT prevention in low-medium-risk subjects. In this study prophylaxis of edema with specific travel stockings was evaluated in 2 separate studies involving flights lasting 7 hours and 10-12 hours. Part I. Subjects at low-medium risk for DVT were contacted; 55 subjects were excluded for several nonmedical, travel-related problems or inconvenient e

Specific features of military low-altitude flight noise: criteria for risk of damage and physiological effects.

The impact of sound from military low-altitude flying (75 m) is characterized by high maximum levels of up to 125 dB, a rapid rise in sound pressure level (steepest 10-dB slope up to 111 dB/s, mean value 36 dB/s), and occasional (30%) follow-up oscillations of up to around 100 dB. The energy within this broadband sound is very often concentrated primarily in the 0.8 to 4 kHz range. A criterion for the risk of damage can be applied using constant-frequency spectral dose analysis in order to establish, for example, how many overflight events might be regarded as tolerable. We can also draw on fi

World-wide environmental problems.

Man and the physical and natural resources necessary to support him in a civilized society are on a collision course. It is simple to say that man cannot continue to grow in number at an ever-increasing rate without a destructive effect upon the environment. Positive scientific proof for this impending calamity is not now available, yet many indications--sometimes physical and sometimes natural--point towards major world-wide environmental troubles in the near future. A number of environmental problems are described, particularly as they relate to the total world system. A computer model simul

The impact of healthy motion seating on lower-limb blood flow and blood pressure response to simulated long-haul air travel.

Prolonged sitting inherent to long-haul air travel can acutely decrease lower-limb blood flow and increase brachial blood pressure. Healthy motion seating (HMS), which passively alters sitting interface pressure and posture, is a promising technology which may attenuate the deleterious effects of long-haul air travel. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of an innovative airplane passenger seat motion feature, aerospace HMS, on lower-limb blood flow and blood pressure in response to 6.5 h of simulated long-haul air travel. In a randomised cross-over design, 19 healthy adults compl

Prehospital Echocardiography During Resuscitation Impacts Treatment in a Physician-Staffed Helicopter Emergency Medical Service: an Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Patients in cardiac arrest must receive algorithm-based management such as basic life support and advanced (cardiac) life support. International guidelines dictate diagnosing and treating any factor that may have caused the arrest or may be complicating the resuscitation. Ultrasound may be of potential value in this process and can be used in a prehospital setting. The objective is to evaluate the use of prehospital ultrasound during traumatic and non-traumatic CPR and determine its impact on prehospital treatment decisions in a Dutch helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS). Clinical significance of stapedioplasty biomechanics: swimming, diving, flying after stapes surgery.

A piston prosthesis in stapedioplasty significantly modifies the function of the normal ossicular chain. Due to the fact that the ear works as a pressure receptor, a piston prosthesis will be displaced at ambient air pressure changes in a different way than the normal stapes. Our ear is constantly exposed to these pressure changes in daily live, for example during swallowing, with tubal opening, with wind gusts at the external ear, during flying, or diving. Temporal bone experiments showed that elevated static pressures, like in tympanometry, can displace a piston up to 0.5mm in the vestibule.

Sequential metatarsal fatigue fractures secondary to abnormal foot biomechanics.

Sequential fatigue fractures of the fourth, second, and third metatarsals in the same foot are reported for a military aviator in the absence of abnormal stresses or underlying bone disease. The likely etiological factor is altered foot biomechanics, as identified in pedobarographic assessment. We have reviewed the literature regarding multiple metatarsal stress fractures.

Common peroneal nerve palsy in a UH-60 aviator.

A case of common peroneal nerve palsy in a UH-60 Blackhawk U.S. Army helicopter pilot is reported. A review of the literature revealed several reports of common peroneal nerve palsy, although there were no published reports of this injury secondary to performing flight duties in the UH-60 cockpit. A common practice among Blackhawk pilots is to brace the "collective" with their left knee, subjecting the common peroneal nerve to possible injury. This action should be considered as a possible cause of common peroneal nerve palsy in this select group of aviators.
