The use of a custom mode electron capture detector to determine mixing ratios of environmental tracers: Sulfur hexafluoride, chlorotrifluoromethane and bromotrifluoromethane.

Atmospheric concentrations of anthropogenic trace gases, such as sulfur hexafluoride, SF6, chlorotrifluoromethane, CF3Cl, and bromotrifluoromethane, CF3Br, are increasing. Their long lifetimes and limited chemical reactivity make them attractive environmental tracers for hydrology and oceanography. While ambient SF6 concentrations can be readily measured using GC-ECD, the simultaneous analysis of CF3Cl and CF3Br is hampered due to their low ECD sensitivity. The response of a commercial ECD for those gases was enhanced using the resonance detection mode which is based on shifting the mean energ

Environmental changes impacting Echinococcus transmission: research to support predictive surveillance and control.

Echinococcosis, resulting from infection with tapeworms Echinococcus granulosus and E. multilocularis, has a global distribution with 2-3 million people affected and 200,000 new cases diagnosed annually. Costs of treatment for humans and economic losses to the livestock industry have been estimated to exceed $2 billion. These figures are likely to be an underestimation given the challenges with its early detection and the lack of mandatory official reporting policies in most countries. Despite this global burden, echinococcosis remains a neglected zoonosis. The importance of environmental fact

Halogenated compounds and climate change: future emission levels and reduction costs.

OBJECTIVES: This work assesses the contribution to climate change resulting from emissions of the group of halogenated greenhouse gases. METHODS: A bottom-up emission model covering 22 technological sectors in four major regions is described. Emission estimates for 1996 and projection for 2010 and 2020 are presented. The costs for deep cuts into projected emission levels are calculated. RESULTS: The substances covered by this study have contributed emissions of 1100 +/- 800 MT CO2 equivalents per year in 1996. In terms of their relative contribution to emissions of CO2 equivalents, this corr

Methylmercury and the health of indigenous peoples: a risk management challenge for physical and social sciences and for public health policy.

Methylmercury in aquatic ecosystems and bio-accumulated in aquatic biota, especially fish, is a major public health concern internationally. Precautionary efforts are currently underway internationally to reduce the anthropogenic release of mercury, which in turn, over time, will reduce human exposure. However, at the present time, it is important to address the issue of management of the risks of exposure as they exist now. Of particular concern are the impacts of methylmercury on indigenous populations which depend on fish as a subsistence food source, both in remote areas of developed count

Intensive cage aquaculture suppresses microbial biomass and restructures functional potential in coastal ecosystems.

Coastal cage aquaculture represents a significant anthropogenic disturbance that profoundly alters marine ecosystems by influencing microbial biomass and species diversity, thereby altering crucial biogeochemical functionalities. Here, we evaluated the ecological footprint of intensive cage aquaculture in Hainan, China, by tracking both microbial standing stocks and community network dynamics. While aquaculture exerted only a marginal effect on bacterial richness, it significantly restructured community composition (adonis, P < 0.01). Unexpectedly, it triggered nearly an 85% reduction in total

How to Ensure a Bright Future for Reproductive Sciences in Animal Conservation.

The chapters in this book emphasize the critical role that reproductive sciences play in wildlife conservation, highlighting the significant progress that has been made since the first edition was published a decade ago. While initially, there was significant excitement around technologies like cloning and bringing animals back from extinction, practical limitations and ethical concerns have since tempered expectations. This new edition underscores that while advanced reproductive technologies can contribute to conservation, they are not standalone solutions for reversing wildlife population d

Interconnected reservoirs and escalating resistance in multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa: An One Health review.

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) has emerged as a major global health threat due to its intrinsic resistance mechanisms, remarkable genetic adaptability, and ability to persist across interconnected human, animal, food, and environmental reservoirs. Increasing evidence indicates that antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in P. aeruginosa is not confined to clinical settings but is sustained through complex ecological interactions involving wastewater systems, agricultural environments, aquaculture, food production chains, and the built environment. This narrative revie

Nanoconfinement-Tailored Surface-Bound Singlet Oxygen Enhances Antibiotics and Antibiotic Resistance Gene Removal at Soil Heterogeneous Interfaces.

Soil serves as a major sink for antibiotics from diverse anthropogenic sources, fueling the proliferation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and endangering public health and ecosystems. Although persulfate-based in situ chemical oxidation (PS-ISCO) offers promise for soil remediation, its efficacy is curtailed by nonselective radical scavenging and limited access to adsorbed antibiotics. Herein, we introduce a sustainable strategy leveraging recovered Enteromorpha waste to fabricate superfine monodisperse biochar-confined zerovalent iron nanocrystals (SM-NCFe0). Nanoconfinement promotes Fe

Integrating environmental DNA, diving surveys and DNA barcoding to track endangered twaite shad (Alosa fallax) spawning sites.

The twaite shad (A. fallax), an anadromous fish species belonging to the Clupeidae family, has experienced population declines throughout Europe. This decline is attributable to a range of anthropogenic pressures, including migration barriers, environmental pollution, habitat degradation, predation by invasive species and unsustainable fishing practices. These factors disrupt the species' lifecycle and ecological balance, leading to significant conservation concerns. Typically, spawning occurs from late spring to early summer, which is when the migration might be up to 400 km upstream from the

Lead exposure modulates thermal vulnerability in Mytilus edulis under multi-stressor conditions.

Studying the cumulative impacts of interacting stressors is essential for predicting ecosystem-wide risks from anthropogenic stressors, yet multi-stressor experiments remain scarce. Here, we investigated how lead (Pb) contamination influences survival and cross-tolerance to salinity and thermal stress in Arctic blue mussels (Mytilus edulis). Mussels were exposed to environmentally relevant Pb concentrations, followed by sequential exposure to varying salinities (5-25) and aerial temperatures (5-36 °C). Survival patterns were assessed, and transcriptomic responses were analysed using RNA sequen

Genetic Analysis of Cutaneous Leishmania in Ramadi: Species Identification and Report of a Local Genetic Polymorphism.

Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (CL) poses a persistent public health threat in Ramadi, Iraq, where post-conflict environmental degradation and population displacement have altered vector habitats. Accurate species identification remains challenging with traditional diagnostic methods, often hindering effective control in this hyper-endemic setting. This study aimed to characterize the molecular profile of Leishmaniaspecies circulating in Ramadi using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) targeting the Internal Transcribed Spacer 1 (ITS1) region and to assess local epidemiological determinants. Pleistocene Legacies in the Contemporary Population Genetic Structure of an Acid-Specialised Crayfish, the Threatened Sand Yabby Cherax robustus.

Following decades of clearing, fragmentation and degradation of coastal heathlands in southeast Queensland, many endemic species are now threatened with extinction, including the vulnerable sand yabby Cherax robustus (Parastacidae), a freshwater crayfish restricted to 200km2 of acidic wetlands. Dramatic fluctuations in the distribution and extent of these wetlands, particularly during the glacial cycles of the Pleistocene, likely shaped the distribution and genetic structure of acid-specialist species, yet their historic and contemporary connectivity remains poorly understood, despite these sp

Spatiotemporal analysis of African swine fever in wild boar in Serbia from 2020 to 2024.

African swine fever (ASF) is a highly fatal viral haemorrhagic disease affecting pigs. This study uses official surveillance data to investigate the persistence and spread of ASF in wild boar populations in Serbia from 2020 to 2024. A total of 480 ASF cases were analysed, with spatiotemporal clustering conducted via SaTScan™ and proximity analyses performed in the Quantum Geographic Information System. The yearly prevalence of ASF in wild boar rose steadily from 0.66% in 2020 to 1.47% in 2023. Seasonal trends showed a significant increase in cases during winter (68%) and spring (24%). Five dis

Phosphate modified zerovalent iron enhances the interfacial hydrogen bond mediated adhesion and inactivation of Escherichia coli.

The microbe-surface interaction plays essential roles in various natural and anthropogenic water processes, and it is of great benefit to tailor their interfacial contact. For instance, zero-valent iron (ZVI) holds great promise as an emerging disinfection agent, but its efficiency remains limited due to the insufficient ZVI-bacteria contact. Herein we modified the surface of ZVI with potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KH2PO4) by ball milling (P-ZVIbm) to facilitate the close adhesion and inactivation of Escherichia coli (E. coli). ExDLVO simulation indicated the significantly alleviated Lewis ac

Asymmetric Electrosorption in a Bio-Inspired Reactor Enables Energy Efficient Ocean Carbon Removal.

Ocean carbon removal represents a promising pathway for mitigating residual anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2), yet existing methods are constrained by high energy demands and potential ecological risks. Here, inspired by the natural calcification process of corals, we present a bio-inspired capacitive decarbonization (CDC) reactor that sequesters dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) from seawater as CaCO3 using only seawater-derived Ca2+ and renewable electricity. The CDC system integrates a Ca2+-selective electrode with a weak electric field to regulate ion transport and disrupt the hydration sh

The sources of bioavailable toxic metals in sediments regulated their aggregated form, environmental responses and health risk-a case study in Liujiang River Basin, China.

Bioavailable toxic metals (BTMs) predominantly stem from anthropogenic emissions, but their emission inventory remain unspecified. Considering the regulation of toxic metals (TMs) forms, variations in BTMs input linked to sources likely result from specific TM forms. To test this, we identified BTMs sources in Liujiang River Basin sediments, focusing on their aggregation and risk based on varying TMs forms. The findings indicated BTMs ratios decreased in the order as follows: Cd > Pb > Zn > Cu > As > Cr > Hg. PMF identified BTMs sourced from industrial, agricultural, and mining emissions with

Small mammal community composition impacts bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus) population dynamics and associated seroprevalence of Puumala orthohantavirus.

Rodents are important reservoirs for zoonotic pathogens that cause diseases in humans. Biodiversity is hypothesized to be closely related to pathogen prevalence through multiple direct and indirect pathways. For example, the presence of non-host species can reduce contact rates of the main reservoir host and thus reduce the risk of transmission ("dilution effect"). In addition, an overlap in ecological niches between two species could lead to increased interspecific competition, potentially limiting host densities and reducing density-dependent pathogen transmission processes. In this study, w

Flood risk assessment by using an interpretative structural modeling based Bayesian network approach (ISM-BN): An urban-level analysis of Shenzhen, China.

With increasingly uncertain environmental conditions under global change, it is rather important for water security management to evaluate the flood risk, which is influenced by the compound effect of severe weather events and strong anthropogenic activities. In this paper, a risk assessment model in the framework of Bayesian network (BN) was proposed through incorporating with the Interpretative Structural Modeling method (ISM), which would produce an integrated ISM-BN model for reliable flood assessments. The ISM is employed to identify the relations among multiple risk factors, and then hel

Assessment of environmental pollution of heavy metals deposited on the leaves of trees at Yazd bus terminals.

There is a lack of information on the effect of urban transport activities in emitting heavy elements into the environment. This research assesses the concentrations of some heavy elements in the deposited atmospheric dust at Yazd bus terminals in Yazd, Iran. So, 34 falling dust samples were collected from the leaves of trees planted near the bus terminals. Following the digestion by nitric acid, the total concentrations of cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), chromium ‬(Cr), and manganese (Mn) were determined in the dust by atomic absorption spectrometry.

Ecological Traits of Fish for Mercury Biomonitoring: Insights from Compound-Specific Nitrogen and Stable Mercury Isotopes.

We coupled compound-specific isotopic analyses of nitrogen (N) in amino acids (δ15NGlu, δ15NPhe) and mercury stable isotopes (δ202Hg, Δ199Hg) to quantify ecological traits governing the concentration, variability, and source of Hg in largemouth bass (LB) and pike gudgeon (PG) across four rivers, South Korea. PG displayed uniform Hg concentration (56-137 ng/g), trophic position (TPcorrected; 2.6-3.0, n = 9), and N isotopes in the source amino acid (δ15NPhe; 7-13‰), consistent with their specialist feeding on benthic insects. LB showed wide ranges in Hg concentration (45-693 ng/g), TPcorrected (
