Seasonal mood patterns in eating disorders.

There has been an increasing body of research literature suggesting a seasonal pattern of mood fluctuations and eating behavior in bulimic patients. Fornari et al. [5] reported worsening of bulimic symptoms during winter. There is a logical connection between Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and bulimia nervosa as both show increased appetite and carbohydrate craving and probably share a common neurobiologic abnormality such as serotonergic dysfunction. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of SAD in a sample of 259 consecutively evaluated outpatients admitted to an eating dis

[The pharmacotherapy of obesity].

Obesity is considered the most concerning and blatantly visible--yet most neglected--public health problem by the WHO. The steadily increasing number of overweight and obese people has reached 2.3 billion and 700 million worldwide, respectively. Obesity is a complex condition, one that presents serious health risks with respect to type 2 diabetes, ischemic heart disease, and hypertension, therefore controlling the global obesity epidemic decreases not only health problems, but also expenditure. The underlying cause of obesity is a metabolic disorder of genetic, central nervous system or endocr

Orexin 1 receptors are a novel target to modulate panic responses and the panic brain network.

BACKGROUND: Although the hypothalamic orexin system is known to regulate appetitive behaviors and promote wakefulness and arousal (Sakurai, 2007 [56]), this system may also be important in adaptive and pathological anxiety/stress responses (Suzuki et al., 2005 [4]). In a recent study, we demonstrated that CSF orexin levels were significantly higher in patients experiencing panic attacks compared to non-panicking depressed subjects (Johnson et al., 2010 [9]). Furthermore, genetically silencing orexin synthesis or blocking orexin 1 receptors attenuated lactate-induced panic in an animal model of…

Neuroendocrine control of glucose homeostasis: integrative mechanisms from the hypothalamus to the brainstem.

Glucose is vital for brain physiological function, acting as the primary energy source that supports cognitive processes, neurotransmitter production, and overall health. The brain requires a constant supply of glucose, and the body has evolved protective mechanisms to maintain this supply during hypoglycemia. Increased appetite and food intake is a fundamental protective response. The precise network of brain regions, nerves, and connections responsible for initiating and coordinating these responses has not been fully identified or mapped. Neuroendocrine centers within the hypothalamus and b

Analysis of Monosynaptic Inputs to Thalamic Paraventricular Nucleus Neurons Innervating the Shell of the Nucleus Accumbens and Central Extended Amygdala.

The paraventricular nucleus of the thalamus (PVT) sends dense projections to the shell of the nucleus accumbens (NAcSh), dorsolateral region of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BSTDL) and the lateral region of central nucleus of the amygdala (CeL). Projection specific modulation of these pathways has been shown to regulate appetitive and aversive behavioral responses. The present investigation applied an intersectional monosynaptic rabies tracing approach to quantify the brain-wide sources of afferent input to PVT neurons that primarily project to the NAcSh, BSTDL and CeL. The results

Identification of a Stress-Sensitive Anorexigenic Neurocircuit From Medial Prefrontal Cortex to Lateral Hypothalamus.

BACKGROUND: A greater understanding of how the brain controls appetite is fundamental to developing new approaches for treating diseases characterized by dysfunctional feeding behavior, such as obesity and anorexia nervosa. METHODS: By modeling neural network dynamics related to homeostatic state and body mass index, we identified a novel pathway projecting from the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) to the lateral hypothalamus (LH) in humans (n = 53). We then assessed the physiological role and dissected the function of this mPFC-LH circuit in mice. RESULTS: In vivo recordings of population ca

Comparison of dietary intake patterns in hemodialysis patients by nutritional status: A cross-sectional analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although appropriate dietary adjustments in hemodialysis (HD) patients are important, most HD patients have difficulty adhering to dietary therapy due to the stress of a restricted-food diet or loss of appetite, which eventually leads to malnutrition and other complications. The dietary intake of HD patients stratified by nutritional status has not yet been studied. METHODS: In total, 111 HD patients from five dialysis centers were stratified into 2 groups based on the Subjective Global Assessment: the well-nourished group and the poorly nourished group. The 7-day dietary intake a

Rare neural crest tumor in teleost species: olfactory neuroblastoma in a spotted pike-characin Boulengerella maculata.

One spotted pike-characin Boulengerella maculata, managed in a public display aquarium for 7 yr, developed a small unilateral pink growth associated with the right nare. The growth eventually extended through both nares after 5 mo. B. maculata is a species of piscivorous fish that relies on visual acuity when hunting prey. The rapidly-growing bilateral tumor would have impeded vision if left untreated. The fish was managed for over 10 mo using only surgical debulking, topical liquid nitrogen, and occasional nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications as needed to reduce tumor size and restore s

Metals and Circadian Rhythms.

Circadian rhythms describe the behavioral and physiological changes that occur in living organisms in order to attune to a 24 hour cycle of day and night. The most striking aspect of circadian function is the sleep-wake cycle, however many other physiological processes are regulated in 24 hour oscillations, including blood pressure, body temperature, appetite, urine production, and the transcription and translation of thousands of circadian dependent genes. Circadian disruption and sleep disorders are strongly connected to neurodegenerative diseases including Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's d

5-HT₁A receptor binding is increased after recovery from bulimia nervosa compared to control women and is associated with behavioral inhibition in both groups.

OBJECTIVE: Because altered serotonin (5-HT) function appears to persist after recovery from bulimia nervosa (RBN), we investigated the 5-HT(1A) receptor, which could contribute to regulation of appetite, mood, impulse control, or the response to antidepressants. METHOD: Thirteen RBN individuals were compared to 21 healthy control women (CW) using positron emission tomography and [carbonyl-(11)C]WAY100635 ([(11)C]WAY). RESULTS: RBN had a 23-34% elevation of [(11)C]WAY binding potential (BP)(P) in subgenual cingulate, mesial temporal, and parietal regions after adjustments for multiple compari

Polycystic ovary syndrome in bulimic women--an evaluation based on the new diagnostic criteria.

An association between bulimia nervosa and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) has been suggested but also questioned. Since there is still a controversy about this issue, we investigated clinical and biochemical symptoms of PCOS according to the new diagnostic criteria in a large group of bulimic women compared with controls. Seventy-seven women with bulimia and 59 matched healthy women were investigated with respect to menstrual status, polycystic ovaries, hirsutism, acne and sex hormone levels. We found increased occurrence of menstrual disturbances, hirsutism and PCOS in bulimic women, wherea

Mood- and restraint-based antecedents to binge episodes in bulimia nervosa: possible influences of the serotonin system.

BACKGROUND: In bulimic syndromes, binge episodes are thought to be caused by dietary restraint and negative moods. However, as central serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine: 5-HT) mechanisms regulate appetite and mood, the 5-HT system could be implicated in diet- and mood-based binge antecedents. METHOD: We used hand-held computers to obtain repeated "online" measurements of eating behaviors, moods, and self-concepts in 21 women with bulimic syndromes, and modeled 5-HT system activity with a measure of platelet [3H]paroxetine-binding density. RESULTS: Mood and self-concept ratings were found to be

Nutritional aspects of psychiatric disorders.

As most diet therapy texts provide little information about psychiatric illnesses and their treatment, this article is intended as a brief introduction for dietitians. Several psychiatric illnesses, including schizophrenia, mood disorders, eating disorders, and substance abuse, may adversely affect food intake and nutritional status. The drugs used to treat those disorders similarly have effects on appetite and gastrointestinal function and interact with food and nutrients. Antipsychotics, antidepressants, and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) cause dry mouth, constipation, and weight gain.

Centrally administered urocortin 2 decreases gorging on high-fat diet in both diet-induced obesity-prone and -resistant rats.

OBJECTIVE: Obesity is a costly, deadly public health problem for which new treatments are needed. Individual differences in meal pattern have been proposed to have a role in obesity risk. The present study tested the hypothesis that (i) the microstructure of chronic high-fat diet intake differs between genetically selected diet-induced obesity (DIO) and diet-resistant (DR) rats, and (ii) central administration of urocortin 2 (Ucn 2), a corticotropin-releasing factor type 2 agonist, decreases high-fat diet intake not only in lean DR rats, but also in obese DIO rats. DESIGN: Male, selectively b

Lateral hypothalamic stimulation can augment or attenuate nucleus gigantocellularis escape: evidence for appetite-associated aversion amelioration.

Carr and Coons (1982a, 1982b) found that lateral hypothalamic (LH) stimulation ameliorates the aversiveness of stimulation of pain-implicated nucleus gigantocellularis (NGC), but this finding disagrees with other findings. To resolve this disagreement, we tested whether amelioration is differentially associated with the ability of LH stimulation to support self-stimulation (SS), to support responding to escape LH stimulation (LH escape), or to elicit stimulation-bound feeding (SBF). LH stimulation not yielding SBF always increased responding to escape from NGC stimulation (NGC escape) and was

Climbing and stereotyped behaviours in mice require the stimulation of D-1 dopamine receptors.

Apomorphine-induced climbing and sniffing behaviours in mice were antagonize by low doses of SCH 23390 and metoclopramide. The selective D-2 dopamine receptor agonists, LY 171555 and RU 24926, and some other dopamine agonists (piribedil, lergotrile, bromocriptine) exerted only inhibitory effects on spontaneous behaviours. The selective D-1 dopamine receptor agonist, SK&F 38393, did not modify the climbing score but increased the sniffing and decreased the gnawing scores compared to the scores of control mice. Typical climbing and stereotyped behaviours were produced by the combination of SK&F

Neuromodulation of the prefrontal cortex facilitates diet-induced weight loss in midlife women: a randomized, proof-of-concept clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: High body mass index (BMI) is associated with neurocognitive impairments that contribute to overeating and interfere with weight loss efforts. Overweight and obesity at midlife can accelerate neurodegenerative changes and increase the risk of late-life dementia. Noninvasive neuromodulation represents a novel, affordable and scalable approach to improve neurocognitive function in this context. The purpose of this proof-of-concept study was to examine whether transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) aimed at enhancing prefrontal cortex activity could enhance weight loss, in com
