Sex-based differences in heavy episodic drinking among adults in Canada, 2017-2023: a repeated cross-sectional analysis.

Heavy episodic drinking (HED) is a key population indicator for harmful alcohol consumption. We used data from the Canadian Community Health Survey to examine recent trends in sex-based differences in HED among adults by age group from 2017 to 2019 and 2022 to 2023. The overall prevalence of HED was 20.5% (95% CI: 20.1, 20.8) in 2017 to 2019 and 20.3% (95% CI: 19.9, 20.8) in 2022 to 2023. Overall, males had a higher HED prevalence than females; however, sex-based differences narrowed in 2022 to 2023 compared to 2017 to 2019. Among those aged 18 to 25 years, females reported a higher HED preval

Transient CNS responses to repeated binge ethanol treatment.

The effects of ethanol (EtOH) on in vivo magnetic resonance (MR)-detectable brain measures across repeated exposures have not previously been reported. Of 28 rats weighing 340.66 ± 21.93 g at baseline, 15 were assigned to an EtOH group and 13 to a control group. Animals were exposed to five cycles of 4 days of intragastric (EtOH or dextrose) treatment and 10 days of recovery. Rats in both groups had structural MR imaging and whole-brain MR spectroscopy (MRS) scans at baseline, immediately following each binge period and after each recovery period (total = 11 scans per rat). Blood alcohol level

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) prevents binge ethanol-dependent aquaporin-4 elevations while inhibiting neurodegeneration: experiments in rat adult-age entorhino-hippocampal slice cultures.

Repetitive binge intoxication with ethanol (alcohol) in adult rats, mimicking chronic ethanol abuse in alcoholics, causes trauma-like brain edema and relatively selective neurodegeneration of hippocampal dentate granule cells and pyramidal neurons in the temporal cortex (especially entorhinal cortex). We have now modeled the aspects of this type of acquired brain damage in vitro with rat entorhino-hippocampal slice cultures of adult brain age (62 ± 3 days). When sequentially treated (four 16-h overnight exposures) with 100 mM ethanol, the slices display elevated levels of aquaporin-4 (AQP4) wa

Evening chronotype, disordered eating behavior, and poor dietary habits in bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to evaluate the relationship between evening chronotype, a proxy marker of circadian system dysfunction, and disordered eating behavior and poor dietary habits in individuals with bipolar disorder (BD). METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we evaluated 783 adults with BD. Chronotype was determined using item 5 from the reduced Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire. The Eating Disorder Diagnostic Scale (EDDS) and the Rapid Eating Assessment for Participants-Shortened Version (REAP-S) were used to assess disordered eating behavior and dietary habits respectively. Maternal periconceptional exposure to cigarette smoking and alcohol and esophageal atresia +/- tracheo-esophageal fistula.

BACKGROUND: Esophageal atresia (EA) is a moderately frequent birth defect that often occurs with tracheo-esophageal fistula (TEF). Etiologic studies for EA+/-TEF have produced inconsistent results. METHODS: This study used data from the National Birth Defects Prevention Study (NBDPS) to examine the association between maternal periconceptional exposure to cigarette smoking and alcohol and EA+/-TEF. Cases of EA+/-TEF and unaffected controls with an estimated date of delivery from October 1997 through December 2003 were identified, and telephone interview reports for smoking and alcohol exposur

Black esophagus: a syndrome of acute esophageal necrosis associated with active alcohol drinking.

Black esophagus, also known as acute esophageal necrosis (AEN) syndrome, is a rare entity characterized by patchy or diffuse circumferential black pigmentation of the esophageal mucosa from ischemic necrosis. It may present with life-threatening upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage resulting in high mortality in immunocompromised patients. Advanced age with multiple comorbidities compounded with compromised hemodynamic states are poor prognostic factors. Findings on laboratory work-up and radiological imaging are non-specific. After initial resuscitation, endoscopic evaluation and histological ex

Alcohol misuse among women in Brazil: recent trends and associations with unprotected sex, early pregnancy, and abortion.

OBJECTIVE: This study compared the rates of binge drinking (BD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) reported for 2006 with those reported for 2012, exploring their associations with unprotected sex, early pregnancy, and abortion in a representative sample of women in Brazilian households. METHODS: This was a descriptive analysis of data from a cross-sectional study involving randomized multistage cluster sampling of the population ≥ 14 years of age. Weighted prevalence rates and odds ratios were estimated, and serial mediation analysis was performed. RESULTS: A total of 4,256 women were analyzed.…

Fears of Evaluation, Honor Concerns, and U.S. Region: Predicting Alcohol Use Problems Among College Students.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol misuse is a public health concern, especially among young adults. Young adults in college are at greater risk for binge drinking and alcohol-related problems than young adults who are not in college. We examined the interplay between fears of evaluation-fear of negative evaluation (FNE) and fear of positive evaluation (FPE)-and culturally grounded evaluation concerns in predicting alcohol use and related problems such as adverse legal, academic, and health outcomes. METHODS: Participants were 596 predominately White, female undergraduates from two US universities in Southe…

Repeated early-adolescent ethanol intoxication promotes riskier decision-making in adult male mice and increases drinking in adult female mice.

Exceeding binge-level alcohol drinking is common among adolescents and is associated with both short- and long-term adverse outcomes. This study evaluated the effects of repeated ethanol intoxication during early-adolescence on behavioral outcomes in early-adulthood. Male and female C57BL/6 mice (5 weeks old) received four intraperitoneal (i.p.) injections, over two weeks, of either saline (control) or 3.2 g/kg ethanol (intoxicated). A subset of intoxicated mice had blood collected on days 1 and 4, confirming heavy intoxication (∼289 mg/dL). At 9 weeks of age, animals were tested in the Light-

Impact of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists on alcohol consumption and liver-related outcomes: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) have demonstrated potential in reducing alcohol intake and impacting liver- … alysis. In narratively summarized results, GLP-1RAs use was associated with reduced alcohol intake, binge drinking, AUDIT scores, and all-cause mortality. Evidence on heavy drinking was mixed, progression to cirrhosis was not statistically different and adverse events were mostly mild. In the pooled analysis of alcohol intake, no significant difference was obser …

Negative and positive allosteric modulators of the α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor regulates the ability of adolescent binge alcohol exposure to enhance adult alcohol consumption.

Rationale and Objectives: Ethanol acts directly on the α7 Nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7). Adolescent-binge alcohol exposure (ABAE) produces deleterious consequences during adulthood, and data indicate that the α7 receptor regulates these damaging events. Administration of an α7 Negative Allosteric Modulator (NAM) or the cholinesterase inhibitor galantamine can prophylactically prevent adult consequences of ABAE. The goals of the experiments were to determine the effects of co-administration of ethanol and a α7 agonist in the mesolimbic dopamine system and to determine if administration

Significant gut microbiota related to patterns of drinking and alcohol relapse in patients with alcoholic hepatitis undergoing stool transplant or corticosteroid therapy.

Alcohol-induced gut microbiota (GM) alterations are linked to alcohol use disorder (AUD) pathogenesis. Healthy donor stool transplant (fecal microbiota transplant [FMT]) reduced alcohol desire and improved clinical outcomes in small animal and human studies. Baseline and post-therapy-related GM changes in a real-world cohort with severe alcohol-related liver disease and AUD, patterns of drinking, and relapse have not been studied. We prospectively analyzed retrospective clinical data and stored samples to examine GM alterations in a cohort of severe alcohol-associated hepatitis (SAH) patients
