Bilateral Corneal Dystrophy Revealing Mucolipidosis Type IV: A Case Report.

A nine-year-old boy, the only child of non-consanguineous parents, presented with progressive bilateral visual impairment and corneal clouding since birth. Ocular examination showed bilateral epithelial-stromal corneal dystrophy associated with photophobia, blepharospasm, alternating esotropia, and nystagmus. Visual acuity was limited to light perception in both eyes, with normal intraocular pressure. Anterior segment optical coherence tomography (OCT) demonstrated diffuse epithelial-stromal thickening with hyperreflective anterior stroma. Flash electroretinography (ERG) was normal, while flas…

The therapeutic potential of mesenchymal stromal cell secretome in treating spontaneous chronic corneal epithelial defects in dogs.

Corneal ulcers in dogs pose a significant challenge in veterinary ophthalmology, often leading to prolonged visual impairment and discomfort … en in cases that had previously failed to respond to conventional therapies. Clinical signs such as blepharospasm, conjunctival hyperemia, and photophobia were alleviated promptly following secretome administration. Secretome therapy was well-tolerated, with no adverse reactions reported, further supporting its safety profile. The findings suggest that ASC secr …

Polyamphoteric washing solutions (PWS) have been used for several years, mainly in industries, for cases of chemical ocular or cutaneous splashes by acid or alkali. We collected 37 cases reporting the use of PWS for ocular and cutaneous chemical splashes from several centres. Among the 37 cases, 55.26% resulted from occupational exposure. Among ocular exposures, initial clinical symptoms included pain (20 cases), blepharospasm (4 cases), hyperaemia (15 cases), palpebral oedema (2 cases) and blurred vision (7 cases). Among cutaneous exposures, 2 injuries were classified as deep, and 11 as super…

Intraerythrocytic iridovirus in central bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps).

Three adult central bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps) originating from a commercial breeding facility presented with clinical signs, including anorexia, dehydration, white multifocal lesions on the dorsal aspect of the tongue, blepharospasm, and weight loss. In 1 of 3 lizards, a marked regenerative anemia was noted, and all 3 bearded dragons had erythrocytic intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies. Nine bearded dragons housed in contact also had identical, but fewer intraerythrocytic inclusions. Inclusion bodies examined by electron microscopy had particles consistent with iridoviruses. Attempts to…

Botulinum toxin clinic-based epidemiologic survey of adults with primary dystonia in East china.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Primary focal or segmental dystonia is a rare clinical condition. The clinical features of dystonia have not been evaluated in China. We performed a study to investigate the epidemiology of primary dystonia and its clinical variants in an adult population. METHODS: A Botulinum Toxin Clinic-based study was conducted in the period 18 May through 8 October 2010 in East China. We identified 523 dystonia patients from the Movement disorders and Botulinum Toxin clinic Cases. RESULTS: The most common focal dystonia were blepharospasm (59%), cervical dystonia (35%), limb dyst…

Actinomyces bowdenii ulcerative keratitis in a dog.

A 5-year-old spayed female diabetic mixed-breed dog underwent phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation to correct bilateral hypermature cataracts. Two months postsurgery, the patient presented with ulcerative keratitis and multifocal stromal abscessation OD, which was controlled, but never resolved, with topical fluoroquinolone therapy. The patient re-presented 2 months later with a new, raised, white gritty corneal opacity associated with hyperemia, chemosis, and blepharospasm OD. Cytology of the right cornea revealed filamentous bacteria, suggestive of Actinomyces spp. Actinomyc…

Experience with long-term treatment with albumin-supplemented botulinum toxin type A.

In earlier studies, we have demonstrated the efficacy of albumin-supplemented botulinum toxin type A (ASBTA) in principle. Here, we present long-term data from 106 patients who received ASTBA over 5-10 years for the treatment of cervical dystonia, blepharospasm and hemifacial spasm. Vials of Dysport were diluted in 0.1% albumin solution to a concentration of 25 units/ml. Overall patients and indications, the mean latency to response was 7.1 +/- 2.2 days, the mean duration of response was 12.3 +/- 3.1 weeks and the mean global clinical improvement (scale 0-3) was 2.6 +/- 0.2. Small-incision manual extracapsular cataract extraction using deep-topical, nerve-block anesthesia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: To determine whether deep-topical anesthesia is suitable for small-incision manual extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Three hundred twenty-six eyes of 253 patients had small-incision manual ECCE under topical anesthesia with a 4% lidocaine-soaked sponge. The severity of the pain, eye movements, blepharospasm, and intraoperative complications were recorded. Patient and surgeon satisfaction levels were assessed. OKT3 neurotoxicity presenting as akinetic mutism.

BACKGROUND: Muromonab-CD3 (OKT3), a mouse monoclonal antibody directed against human T lymphocytes, is a potent immunosuppressive agent used to reverse and more recently to prevent allograft rejection, mostly in cardiac transplant recipients. Neurotoxicity from OKT3 usually manifests itself as a transient aseptic meningitis and remains uncommon. METHODS: The authors describe a dramatic neurologic syndrome after orthotopic heart transplant characterized by akinetic mutism, blepharospasm, anomic aphasia, and delirium. RESULTS: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed meningeal enhancement and s…

Abnormalities induced in reciprocal inhibition between orbicularis oculi and levator palpebrae following peripheral facial palsy.

Peripheral Facial palsy (PFP) is generally considered a benign condition with good recovery and no sequelae. Yet, a distortion in the gesture and abnormal blinking, as those typically found in blepharospasm, can potentially develop early on. Such abnormal movements seem to be related to remodelling mechanisms that take place in the process of recovery. We report 2 cases where such clinical features became evident following an idiopathic PFP, as a result of reciprocal inhibition of orbicularis oculi and levator palpebrae. Hence, the neurophysiological study revealed an increased frequency in th…
