Study of Variation and Latency of Wave V of Brain Stem Evoked Response Audiometry in North Central India.

INTRODUCTION: In Nunavut, 60-80% of pregnant women report smoking in pregnancy, a rate five times the Canadian average. Nunavut also has the highest rates of preterm birth and low birth weight infants in Canada. The present study assessed whether the number of cigarettes smoked per day, as recorded in the first trimester, influenced birth outcomes. METHODS: Maternal-newborn charts were reviewed for infants born between 1 January 2003 and 31 December 2005 to at least one Inuit parent in the Qikiqtaaluk (Baffin) region of Nunavut. Smoking data, as reported by the mother at an early prenatal vis

[Brainstem auditory evoked potentials in neurophysiological assessment of brain stem dysfunction in patients with atherostenosis of vertebral arteries].

AIM: To assess brain stem dysfunction in patients with hemodynamically significant stenosis of vertebral arteries (VA) using short latency brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP). MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study group included 50 patients (mean age 64±6 years) with hemodynamically significant extracranial VA stenosis. RESULTS: Patients with hemodynamically significant extracranial VA stenosis had BAEP abnormalities including the elongation of interpeak intervals I-V and peak V latency as well as the reduction of peak I amplitude. After transluminal balloon angioplasty with stenting of VA…

From cord to caudate: characterizing umbilical cord blood stem cells and their paracrine interactions with the injured brain.

Stem cells are proving to be a promising therapy for a wide range of pediatric disorders, from neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy to pediatric leukemia. Owing to their low immunogenicity and ease of availability, umbilical cord blood (UCB) progenitor cells are increasingly replacing fetal- and adult-derived cells in therapeutic settings. Multiple environmental and demographic factors affect the number and type of stem cells extracted from UCB, and these differences have been associated with disparities in outcomes after transplantation. To avoid variations in efficacy, as well as the pot

Brain-stem laceration and blunt rupture of thoracic aorta: is the intrapleural bleeding postmortem in origin?: an autopsy study.

Some of the fatally injured car occupants could have had both blunt rupture of thoracic aorta with great amount of intrapleural blood, and pontomedullar laceration of brain-stem as well, with both injuries being fatal. The aim of this study was to answer if all intrapleural bleeding in these cases was antemortem, or the bleeding could also be partially postmortem. We observed the group of 66 cases of blunt aortic rupture: 21 case with brain-stem laceration, and 45 cases without it. The average amount of intrapleural bleeding in cases without brain-stem laceration (1993 ± 831 mL) was significan

Stem cell-derived neurons grafted in the striatum are expelled out of the brain after chronic cortical stroke.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In humans and rodents, cortical stroke can lead to cortex atrophy in long-term survivors. In the rodent, fetal brain neural precursors or stem cell-derived neurons grafted in the stroke-lesioned brain integrate successfully and reduce infarct in the short term. We have examined the fate, in the long term, of mouse embryonic stem cell-derived neural precursors grafted after permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion in mice. METHODS: Green fluorescent protein-labeled neural precursors were grafted in the striatum of control and lesioned mice and their fate examined 9 mo

Morphofunctional study of the therapeutic efficacy of human mesenchymal and neural stem cells in rats with diffuse brain injury.

We studied the effect of transplantation of human stem cells from various tissues on reparative processes in the brain of rats with closed craniocerebral injury. Combined treatment with standard drugs and systemic administration of xenogeneic stem cells had a neuroprotective effect. The morphology of neurons rapidly returned to normal after administration of fetal neural stem cells. Fetal mesenchymal stem cells produced a prolonged effect on proliferative activity of progenitor cells in the subventricular zone of neurogenesis. Adult mesenchymal stem cells had a strong effect on recovery of the

Anatomical and functional recovery by embryonic stem cell-derived neural tissue of a mouse model of brain damage.

We have treated undifferentiated mouse embryonic stem (ES) cells with all-trans retinoic acid (RA) to induce differentiation in vitro into neuron-like cells with good cell viability for use as a graft. Furthermore, we asked whether the RA-induced neuron-like cells restored neurological dysfunction. To this end, the cells were transplanted into right hemiplegia model of mice, developed by a cryogenic injury of motor cortex. Motor function of the recipients was gradually improved, whereas little improvement was observed in control mice. The lesion showed clustering of mature and almost mature ne

[An autopsy case of pseudomesotheliomatous adenocarcinoma of the lung complicated with brain stem infarction due to nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis].

A 53-year-old man was admitted to our hospital for back, left shoulder and upper limb pain. Chest radiography and CT on admission revealed right pleural effusion and a focal plate-like thickening of the major fissure. Pleural effusion cytology revealed adenocarcinoma, which was diagnosed as non-small-cell lung cancer with bone metastasis. The patient suffered from DIC, melena and multiple cerebral infarctions during chemotherapy and died on the eighth day of the second course of chemotherapy. Autopsy revealed a pseudomesotheliomatous adenocarcinoma covering the pleura of the right middle lobe,

Fatal injuries of the brain stem and/or upper cervical spinal cord in traffic accidents: nine autopsy cases.

Nine forensic autopsy cases were studied. All had injuries of the brain stem and/or upper cervical spinal cord due to traffic accidents. Among the nine subjects, eight were pedestrians and one was a left, front seat occupant of a vehicle. Examination of these 9 cases revealed that three had ponto-medullary avulsion, two had medullary avulsion and the other four had laceration of the upper cervical spinal cord. Atlanto-occipital dislocation was observed in five cases, and a ring fracture around the foramen magnum in the other two cases. Intraventricular haemorrhage, probably due to tears of the…

Monkeys with unilateral ventromedial tegmental lesions of the brain stem: models for Parkinson's disease and Lesch-Nyhan syndrome.

1. Monkeys with surgical unilateral ventromedial tegmental lesions of the brain stem served as models for investigating abnormalities in Parkinson's disease and Lesch-Nyhan syndrome. 2. The animals exhibited some neurological deficits which are similar to those observed in Parkinson's disease or Lesch-Nyhan syndrome. 3. In monkeys with unilateral ventrolateral tegmental lesions, the levels of dopamine and the activities of catecholamine-synthesizing enzymes were reduced on the lesion side of the striatum, and hypokinesia and tremor developed on the contralateral extremities. 4. Dopa or dopamin…

Subarachnoid haemorrhage in the rat: effect on the development of vasospasm of selective lesions of the catecholamine systems in the lower brain stem.

Intracisternal injection of blood in the rat produces an angiographically demonstrable biphasic vasospasm. Lesioning at the level of the mesencephalon of the ascending catecholamine pathways from locus coeruleus in the pons and the A1 and A2 nuclei in the medulla oblongata prior to cisternal blood injection prevents the development of both acute and late spasm. Selective lesioning in the medulla oblongata of ascending fibres from A1 and A2 also prevents development of spasm, indicating that these nuclei, which project to the hypothalamus-pituitary, are essential for the spasm syndrome. It is s

[Use of a body acoustic probe and the conduction of brain stem potentials for the determination of sound conduction during tympanoplasty].

A new procedure of evoking brain stem potentials is introduced. Contrary to evoking brain stem potentials by acoustic stimulation via earphone or loudspeaker, we touch the middle ear apparatus at various locations using a piezoelectric transducer with a screwed-on probe, thus causing physiological movements within the sound conducting structures (Fig. 3). As a reaction to this kind of stimulation--1000 clicks with a duration of 0.1 ms were given--far field brain stem potentials can be recorded. The calibration of this special sound probe--not bigger than a pencil (Fig. 1)--was made by equalizi…

Frequency of Alzheimer's neurofibrillary tangles in the basal ganglia and brain-stem in Alzheimer's disease, senile dementia and the aged.

The authors studied the frequency of neurofibrillary tangles in the basal ganglia and brain-stem of two cases with Alzheimer's disease (average 55 years of age), six cases with senile dementia (average 82 years) and ten cases with cerebral softening and arteriosclerosis in old age (average 79 years). The distribution pattern of ANC was almost the same in Alzheimer's disease and senile dementia, i.e. plenty of ANC were found in the nucl. dorsalis raphe, nucl. centralis superior, nucl. mamilloinfundibularis and nucl. basilaris, but in senile dementia ANC were much fewer in the thalamus and lenti

Human-Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell-Derived Neural Stem Cell Therapy Limits Tissue Damage and Promotes Tissue Regeneration and Functional Recovery in a Pediatric Piglet Traumatic-Brain-Injury Model.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of death and disability in pediatric patients and often results in delayed neural development and altered connectivity, leading to lifelong learning, memory, behavior, and motor function deficits. Induced pluripotent stem cell-derived neural stem cells (iNSCs) may serve as a novel multimodal therapeutic as iNSCs possess neuroprotective, regenerative, and cell-replacement capabilities post-TBI. In this study, we evaluated the effects of iNSC treatment on cellular, tissue, and functional recovery in a translational controlled cortical impact TBI pi
