Imaging of traumatic injury and impingement of anterior knee fat.

Fat is not just used by the body as bulk tissue. In addition to its role in storing energy and regulating hormone action, fat is used in som … excessive shear forces, due to more complex and less well-defined disruptions that result in pseudo-bursitis. There are three main anterior, intracapsular and extrasynovial fat pads in the knee joint, which are the infrapatellar fat pad (IFP) or Hoffa's fat pad, the quadriceps fat pad and the prefemoral fat pad. The IFP plays an important role as a mechani …

Generation and characterization of a novel shoulder contracture mouse model.

Frozen shoulder is a relatively common disorder that leads to severe pain and stiffness in the shoulder joint. Although this disorder is self-limiting in nature, the symptoms often persist for years, resulting in severe disability. Recent studies using human specimens and animal models have shown distinct changes in the gene expression patterns in frozen shoulder tissue, indicating that novel therapeutic intervention could be achieved by controlling the genes that are potentially involved in the development of frozen shoulder. To achieve this goal, it is imperative to develop a reliable animal

Low-energy extracorporeal shock wave therapy as a treatment for greater trochanteric pain syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Greater trochanteric pain syndrome is often a manifestation of underlying gluteal tendinopathy. Extracorporeal shock wave therapy is effective in numerous types of tendinopathies. HYPOTHESIS: Shock wave therapy is an effective treatment for chronic greater trochanteric pain syndrome. STUDY DESIGN: Case control study; Level of evidence, 3. METHODS: Thirty-three patients with chronic greater trochanteric pain syndrome received low-energy shock wave therapy (2000 shocks; 4 bars of pressure, equal to 0.18 mJ/mm(2); total energy flux density, 360 mJ/mm(2)). Thirty-three patients with

Long-term outcome of frozen shoulder.

Two-hundred and sixty-nine shoulders in 223 patients with a diagnosis of primary frozen shoulder were studied. The main outcome measure was the Oxford shoulder score. The mean follow-up from symptom onset was 4.4 years (range, 2-20 years). The mean age at symptom onset was 53.4 years; with women affected more commonly than men (1.6:1.0). Twenty percent of patients reported bilateral symptoms, but there were no recurrent cases. In the long term, 59% of patients had normal or near normal shoulders and 41% reported some ongoing symptoms. The majority of these persistent symptoms were mild (94%),

Ultrasound evaluation of soft tissue masses and fluid collections.

Musculoskeletal ultrasound has utility as a first-line screening modality in the evaluation of soft tissue masses. The sonographic appearances of cysts or lipomas may be sufficient to obviate the need for further imaging. For other complex cystic or solid masses, ultrasound is an inexpensive, widely available imaging modality that can evaluate lesion vascularity, guide diagnostic and therapeutic aspiration or biopsy procedures, and be used for follow-up examinations to determine response to therapeutic interventions.

A comparative study of the aetiological factors in shoulder pain.

Sixty patients presenting consecutively with shoulder pain to a rheumatology clinic have been studied. There was a significant association of shoulder capsulitis with diabetes mellitus and antecedent trauma when compared with supraspinatus tendonitis (SST). There were no immunological or other biochemical differences between the capsulitis and SST patients. The results suggest that patients with shoulder capsulitis should be investigated to exclude diabetes mellitus particularly when there is no history of antecedent trauma.

Musculoskeletal sporotrichosis.

Sporotrichosis is a chronic, indolent, fungal infection that rarely involves the musculoskeletal system. The etiologic agent, Sporothrix schenckii, is ubiquitous in nature and has been isolated from soil, timber, decaying vegetation, and a variety of foliage. The organism gains entrance to the body through trauma to the skin or, in rare instances, by inhalation. The vast majority of infections in humans is characterized by nodular or ulcerated lesions of the cutaneous tissues and adjacent lymphatics. Osteoarticular involvement may occur either by contiguous spread from a cutaneous focus, throu

Melatonin administration attenuates fibrosis progression in frozen shoulder syndrome: a rat model study.

BACKGROUND: Frozen shoulder syndrome, or adhesive capsulitis, is characterized by pain and restricted joint mobility due to fibrotic changes within the shoulder joint capsule. Despite its potential for spontaneous resolution, persistent symptoms often necessitate further treatment. Melatonin, known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic properties, has emerged as a promising therapeutic agent for this condition. This study aimed to investigate the impact of melatonin on adhesive capsulitis in a rat model, focusing on its potential to attenuate fibrosis progression and improve joint pathol

Is there any advantage between using continuous passive motion and conventional physical therapy in patients with primary adhesive capsulitis?: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: We are unsure if continuous passive motion (CPM) has any role in the nonoperative management of the Primary Stiff Shoulder (frozen shoulder). We hypothesized that there is no difference in pain improvement, range of motion, and function with or without CPM in patients with a primary stiff shoulder. METHOD: We searched the databases for clinical trials comparing CPM versus no-CPM physiotherapy. In the final step, we reviewed five randomized clinical trials. We collected the data of Constant Shoulder Score (CSS), the visual analog scale of pain, shoulder pain and disability index (S

Physiotherapists' practice patterns for the diagnosis and management of patients with chronic contracted frozen shoulder in the United Arab Emirates.

BACKGROUND: Adhesive capsulitis or contracted shoulder, known as frozen shoulder, is a persistent painful condition that may last for more than three months. It is a common disease-causing morbidity that causes pain and loss of shoulder range of motion. Physical therapy is advocated for the restoration of a pain-free state and normal use of the upper extremity, along with other interventions. PURPOSE: This study aimed to explore the level of current clinical practice for managing chronic contracted frozen shoulder (CCFS) among physiotherapy professionals in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) comp

MRI findings in calcific deposits in and around shoulder: atypical locations beyond supraspinatus.

Hydroxyapatite deposition disease is a spectrum of disorders including calcific tendinitis, calcific periarthritis, and hydroxyapatite-induced arthritis. These usually present with acute onset of pain, and clinically, may be confused with acute infection or adhesive capsulitis. Supraspinatus calcific tendinitis and its imaging appearance is well known; however, calcific deposits may occur less commonly in other structures in and around the shoulder joint. We describe nine cases of relatively uncommon locations of calcific deposits around the shoulder with their imaging appearances.
