[Acid-base balance in capillary blood of newborns with perinatal hypoxemia symptoms].

The purpose of the study was to compare acid-base parameters in capillary blood of newborns from groups with hypoxaemia symptoms and from the control group (physiological deliveries). 111 newborns were divided into 8 groups. Group I consisted of 33 newborns from uncomplicated labour while groups II-VIII involved newborns from complicated labor with symptoms of hypoxaemia. Capillary blood was taken in the 10th and 60th minute and after 24 hours of newborn's life. In newborns with pathological CTG, green amniotic fluid and prolonged first stage of labour--higher duration of acidosis was observed

Quantification of retinal capillary density and flow velocity in patients with essential hypertension.

Arterial hypertension is known to be an important risk factor for cerebral and cardiovascular disease. Previous studies in rats have demonstrated that changes in both capillary density and vessel diameter may contribute to increased vascular resistance in hypertension. In vivo studies of human subjects with essential hypertension revealed a reduction in the number of arterioles in the skin and conjunctiva; no other in vivo data are available from other tissues. By means of a new imaging technique, capillary density and capillary blood flow velocity can now be assessed in the human retina. We u

Roles of intra- and extracellular carbonic anhydrase in alveolar-capillary CO2 equilibration.

Alveolar-capillary CO2 equilibration involves diffusive equilibration of CO2 across the blood-gas barrier and chemical equilibration of perf … e used, together with our previous model of CO2-HCO-3-H+ reactions and transport in saline-perfused capillaries (Bidani et al. J. Appl. Physiol. 55: 75-83, 1983), to compute the relevant driving forces and conductances. Reactive CO2 equilibration was markedly affected by extracellular (vascular) CA activity but not by the activity of intracellular (cytosolic) …

Cerebellar hemorrhage associated with capillary telangiectasia and venous angioma: a case report.

We report a case of recurrent cerebellar hemorrhage from a capillary telangiectasia associated with a venous angioma. Based on the findings in this case and a review of the literature, we concluded that the hemorrhage was from the telangiectasia and not from the associated venous angioma. The association between capillary telangiectasias and cavernous malformations and the established association of the latter with venous angiomas are reviewed. This case illustrates the complex interrelationship between these histologically distinct malformations and its influence on their potential to hemorrh

The impact of experimental diabetes mellitus in rats on glomerular capillary number and sizes.

The structural counterpart of the increased glomerular filtration found in acute diabetes mellitus and experimental diabetes has been ascribed to the increased glomerular filtration surface. Using modern design-based stereological methods and light microscopy on perfusion-fixed rat kidneys the average total surface area of capillaries per glomerulus in control rats was 291 +/- 42 10(-3) mm2 (+/- SD) increasing to 383 +/- 55 10(-3) mm2 in 10-day-diabetic rats. There was a further increase to 469 +/- 70 10(-3) mm2 in 50-day-diabetic rats. The average total length of capillaries per glomerulus in…

Separation of estrogens and rodenticides using capillary electrophoresis with aqueous-methanolic buffers.

Capillary electrophoresis (CE) has proven to be an efficient method for the separation of various charged and neutral analytes. For analytes having limited solubility in water, the CE mode of separation has been micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography (MECC). However, another approach is the direct addition of an organic solvent to a non-MECC CE separation system. Walbroehl and Jorgenson and also Balchunas and Sepaniak have reported on the use of organics in CE but the focus of their work was using MECC to separate small organic compounds. This work examines the use of aqueous-methano

A simple method for the in vitro culture of human retinal capillary endothelial cells.

A simple method for the culture of human retinal capillary endothelial cells in vitro is described in this report. Through a process of gentle mechanical disruption and sieving, a sufficient yield of retinal microvessels was obtained from one or two human eyes to allow the culture of endothelial cells in abundance. The cells were factor VIII-positive and demonstrated typical vascular endothelial morphology. Pericyte contamination was prevented by using human platelet-poor serum in primary culture and passaging cells with a low concentration of trypsin. Proliferation assays revealed that the ce

Capillary filling analysis by digital subtraction angiography for vertebro-basilar insufficiency.

Vertebro-basilar insufficiency (VBI) is a vague clinical entity including several symptoms such as faintness, dizziness, vertigo. Millikan and Siekert reported a 'syndrome of intermittent insufficiency of basilar arterial system'. But vascular abnormalities responsible for such symptoms are often hardly diagnosed by conventional angiography, because vertebro-basilar artery systems have many kinds of anomalous congenital origins. Conventional angiography gives us arterial informations such as stenosis, occlusion and malformations, but it often fails to reveal capillary perfusions because of its

Formation of capillary-like tubes by vascular endothelial cells cocultivated with keratocytes.

This report describes an in vitro system that could be useful for investigating corneal neovascularization. When isolated bovine capillary endothelial cells (CEC) were cocultivated with rabbit corneal keratocytes, capillary-like cords extended actively from the endothelial cells in the multilayers of the keratocytes. The developing cords continued to elongate, branch out, and anastomose with each other, forming a capillary-like network by the 12th day of coculturing. Electron microscopic observation revealed that the cords were tubular structures composed of three to seven endothelial cells in

Serum electrolytes and capillary blood gases in the management of hypertrophic pyloric stenosis.

The purpose of this study was to assess whether the concentration of serum chloride and other variables, namely serum sodium, potassium and bicarbonate, can be used to predict metabolic acid-base status in infants with hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (HPS) and to assess whether such a prediction is influenced by the state of hydration. One hundred and sixty-three infants with HPS who had at least one set of serum electrolyte and capillary blood gas estimations performed after admission were studied retrospectively. A further 25 infants who had their electrolyte and blood gases measured after at

Capillary microscopy is a potentially useful method for detecting bleomycin vascular toxicity.

Capillary microscopy is an easy, noninvasive procedure to examine in vivo the dermis capillaries of the nailfold. It has demonstrated clinical use in the etiologic study of Raynaud's phenomenon. We consider a "vascular activity pattern" to be present at capillary microscopy when one of the following associations is observed: tortuous capillary vessels plus ramifications with or without loss of a moderate amount of capillaries. Capillary tortuousity alone is not considered pathologic. It is well known that bleomycin (BLEO) can occasionally induce vascular-associated diseases. To examine the vas…

Capillary endothelial-cell mitogenic activity in experimental branch vein occlusion.

Since the 1940s, the major hypothesis regarding the stimulus for neovascularization occurring in diabetic retinopathy and other "ischemic" retinopathies has involved the release of a soluble angiogenic factor from the ischemic retina. We sought to test this by measuring the endothelial mitogenic activity that could be extracted from an ischemic retina caused by branch vein occlusion in the cat. We found that the extractable endothelial-cell mitogenic activity from normal retinal areas was similar to that in ischemic areas at 1, 2, and 7 days after the occlusion. In the area of occluded veins,

Simultaneous determination of butyltin and phenyltin compounds in oysters by capillary gas chromatography.

A method is described for the simultaneous determination of butyl- and phenyltin compounds in oyster samples. The organotin compounds were extracted (as chlorides) from oyster homogenates with hydrochloric acid and benzene in the presence of 0.05% tropolone. These compounds were converted into pentyl derivatives with pentyl Grignard reagent and then analysed by capillary gas chromatography with a flame photometric detector equipped with a 393-nm filter. The recoveries of six organotin compounds added to oyster samples ranged from 71 to 74%. The detection limits of butyl- and phenyltin compound

Separation of serotonin from catechols by capillary zone electrophoresis with electrochemical detection.

Capillary zone electrophoresis with electrochemical detection is demonstrated with columns having only 9-microns inner diameter. Amperometric detection limits of 0.7 amol are reported for serotonin. The difficult problem of resolving serotonin and dopamine--two neurotransmitters of interest having similar electrophoretic mobilities--is addressed by chemical means to improve selectivity. These include buffer modification with 2-propanol and a system employing borate complexation of the catechol in combination with sodium dodecyl sulfate micelles.

Role of peritubular capillary forces in the renal action of carbonic anhydrase inhibitor.

Micropuncture study was performed in Munich-Wistar rats to assess peritubular capillary Starling forces in renal superficial cortex during suppression of proximal fluid reabsorption by carbonic anhydrase inhibitor. Administration of benzolamide (2 mg/kg/hr, i.v., Group 1, N = 7 rats) caused not only reduction in absolute rate of proximal fluid reabsorption (APR, from 26.7 +/- 4.0 nl/min to 17.7 +/- 3.6, P less than 0.001), but also an increase in peritubular transcapillary hydraulic-pressure difference (from 10.0 +/- 0.5 mm Hg to 15.2 +/- 0.5, P less than 0.001). Evaluation of a benchtop capillary gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer for clinical toxicology.

We evaluated the Hewlett-Packard 5995B benchtop capillary gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) for its ability to identify drugs commonly detected and (or) measured in the clinical toxicology laboratory. Initial experiments indicated that the instrument as originally configured, with an isolation valve between the gas chromatograph and mass spectrometer, was unsatisfactory for the identification of hypnotics-sedatives. However, with the capillary inserted directly into the ion source, we could detect 10 ng of these drugs on a total-ion chromatogram. The software programs cause the instr

Relationship between nailfold capillary abnormalities and organ involvement in systemic sclerosis.

Nailfold capillary abnormalities in 42 consecutive patients with systemic sclerosis were studied by wide field capillary microscopy, and capillary abnormalities were correlated with organ involvement. Twenty-eight patients hd diffuse skin disease, and 14 had the CREST variant of systemic sclerosis (calcinosis, Raynaud's phenomenon, esophageal dysmotility, sclerodactyly, telangiectasis) with anticentromere antibodies. Nailfold capillary enlargement and loss were graded from photographs. There was no correlation between the severity of either nailfold capillary loss or enlargement and duration o
