A proposed new classification for the renal collecting system of cattle.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the intrarenal anatomy of kidneys obtained from cattle and to propose a new classification for the renal collecting system of cattle. SAMPLE POPULATION: 37 kidneys from 20 adult male mixed-breed cattle. PROCEDURES: Intrarenal anatomy was evaluated by the use of 3-D endocasts made of the kidneys. The number of renal lobes and minor renal calyces in each kidney and each renal region (cranial pole, caudal pole, and hilus) was quantified. RESULTS: The renal pelvis was evident in all casts and was classified into 2 types (nondilated [28/37 {75.7%}] or dilated [9/37 {24.3%}…

Monitoring metabolic health of dairy cattle in the transition period.

This paper reviews the importance of energy metabolism in transition dairy cows, its associations with disease and reproduction, and strategies for monitoring cows under field conditions during this critical time. Essentially all dairy cattle experience a period of insulin resistance, reduced feed intake, negative energy balance, hypocalcemia, reduced immune function, and bacterial contamination of the uterus soon before, or in the weeks after calving. One-third of dairy cows may be affected by some form of metabolic or infectious disease in early lactation. Routine, proactive actions, observa…

Detection, quantifications and pharmacokinetics of toltrazuril sulfone (Ponazuril) in cattle.

Toltrazuril sulfone (Ponazuril) is a triazine-based anti-protozoal agent with highly specific actions against apicomplexan group of organisms, which are undergoing intensive investigation. Toltrazuril sulfone may have clinical application in the treatment of Neospora. caninum and other protozoal infections in cattle. To evaluate absorption, distribution, and elimination characteristics of toltrazuril sulfone in cattle, a sensitive validated quantitative high-pressure liquid chromatography method for toltrazuril sulfone in bovine biological fluids was developed. After a single oral dose of tolt…

Seroprevalence of tick-borne diseases among cattle in the Sudan.

This study was carried out to determine the prevalence of Theileria annulata, Theileria mutans, Babesia bigemina, and Anaplasma marginale antibodies among cattle in the Sudan. A total of 600 serum samples were collected from indigenous (zebu) and crossbred cattle (zebu x Friesian) of both sex and different age groups. Indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to assess antibodies against tick-borne diseases in apparently healthy cattle. The overall prevalence rates of T. annulata, T. mutans, B. bigemina, and A. marginale antibodies were found to be 30.8%, 6.1%, 10.7%, and 38.9%, resp…

Antimicrobial resistant Salmonella in dairy cattle in the United States.

Increased frequency of antimicrobial resistant Salmonella isolated from humans over the last quarter century in the United States has led to concern about the contribution animal production systems have played in the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistant Salmonella. In order to better understand the potential role of dairy cattle as a reservoir for antimicrobial resistant Salmonella, it is important to understand methods currently used to measure the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance among Salmonella from human and animal populations. This review describes the biology of Salmone…

A review of genetic resistance to disease in Bos taurus cattle.

Cattle show considerable variability in their responses to a wide range of disease challenges, and much of the variability is genetic. This review highlights genetic variation in disease susceptibility in Bos taurus cattle, with variation found at the breed level and also within breeds. Disease challenges come from bacteria and viruses, parasites and feed-borne toxins. For an animal to survive, it needs its own mechanisms for resisting these challenges, or for being resilient to them, or it must be protected artificially from them. Disease challenges have been classified as 'diseases from with…

Cryptosporidium species found in cattle: a proposal for a new species.

Humans and animals are infected worldwide by apicomplexan parasites of the genus Cryptosporidium. Yet, parasitologists are continuously surprised by the expanding complexity of this genus. Over the past 20 years, cattle were identified as being a reservoir host for taxa transmitted from animals to humans. However, a remarkable assemblage of species affects cattle, including both cattle-specific, in addition to a zoonotic, species. To clarify species classification, Cryptosporidium pestis n. sp. is proposed for the species formerly recognized as the "bovine genotype" of C. parvum. The observed …

Ticks and tick-borne disease in Guatemalan cattle and horses.

Blood samples and ticks were collected from 48 cattle and 74 horses from seven sites in the Peten region of Guatemala. Data on body condition, mucous membrane capillary refill time and tick infestation levels were recorded for each animal in the study. Horses had significantly higher levels of tick infestation than cattle, as well as poorer body condition scores. Seroprevalence of Babesia spp. was 95.8% for B. bovis in cattle, 89.6% for B. bigemina in cattle, and 92.7% for B. equi in horses. Seroprevalence of Anaplasma marginale in cattle was 87.5%, similar to reports in animals from other reg…

Genomic imprinting of H19 in naturally reproduced and cloned cattle.

Animals produced from assisted reproductive technologies suffer from developmental abnormalities and early fetal death at a higher frequency than that observed in those produced by natural breeding. These symptoms are reminiscent of imprinting disruptions in the human and mouse, suggesting the possibility of perturbations in the expression of imprinted genes such as biallelic expression or silencing. H19 is one of the imprinted genes first identified in mice and humans, but its sequence and imprinting status have not been determined in cattle. In the present study, we obtained the majority of …

The pathogenesis of neosporosis in pregnant cattle: inoculation at mid-gestation.

To investigate the pathogenesis of bovine neosporosis, 14 pregnant cattle were each inoculated subcutaneously with either 10(7) or 5 x 10(8) Neospora caninum (strain NC1) tachyzoites at 140 days' gestation. Serial necropsies were then carried out over an 8-week period. In the placenta, Neospora DNA and histopathological changes were observed in samples taken 14 days post-inoculation (dpi), with focal necrosis of maternal caruncular septa and fetal placental villi, serum leakage, and a maternal and fetal inflammatory response. At subsequent samplings, pathological changes in the placenta showed…

Pattern and manipulation of follicular development in Bos indicus cattle.

Bos indicus cattle are widespread in tropical regions due to their adaptation to these environments. Although data on reproductive performance have indicated both inferior and superior results for B. indicus cattle, there is little doubt that B. indicus cattle are superior than Bos taurus cattle when they are both kept in tropical or subtropical environments, where stressors like hot temperatures, humidity, ectoparasites and low quality forages are greater. Reproductive endocrinology and oestrus behaviour of the B. indicus cattle have been studied for over 30 years; however, the application of…

Epidemiology of Norwalk-like virus infections in cattle in The Netherlands.

"Norwalk-like viruses" (NLVs) are the most common cause of acute non-bacterial gastroenteritis in humans. Cattle may be a reservoir of NLVs although never bovine NLVs have been found in humans. To gain more insight into the epidemiology of NLV, infections in cattle in The Netherlands were studied. Individual faecal samples from a large dairy herd and 243 pooled samples from veal calf farms were analysed for NLV by RT-PCR. Calves under 3 months of age in the dairy herd were sampled three to five times with 3-week intervals, whereas dairy cattle were sampled twice with a 2-month interval. In 31.…

Identification of mechanisms of natural resistance to African trypanosomiasis in cattle.

Natural resistance to African trypanosomiasis in certain Bos taurus cattle in West Africa, called trypanotolerance, may hold solutions for control of this economically crippling disease. Comparison of immune responses between trypanotolerant and trypanosusceptible cattle have shown some differences in antibody response, complement level and cytokine expression, but it is not known whether these differences are the cause of resistance. Two experiments were carried out to assess the contribution of the immune and haemopoietic systems to trypanotolerance. The production of haemopoietic chimaeras …

Leptin and its role in the central regulation of reproduction in cattle.

Leptin, a 16kDa product of the adipose obese (ob) gene, has been shown to contribute to the regulation of energy metabolism, feeding behavior, and reproduction in several monogastric species, including humans. Recent reports have provided evidence that the leptin gene is functionally relevant in cattle and sheep, and may contribute to an array of important reproductive events, including puberty. Leptin gene expression and circulating leptin increase markedly during sexual maturation in heifers reaching puberty during late spring or early summer. In addition, serum leptin concentrations increas…
