A 10-year follow-up of extracranial-intracranial bypass for the treatment of bilateral giant internal carotid artery aneurysms in a patient with fibromuscular dysplasia: case report.

Cervicocephalic fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) is an idiopathic, non-inflammatory and non-atherosclerotic arteriopathy which usually affects small- and medium-sized cervical arteries distributed at the atlas and axis interspace. Few cervicocephalic FMD patients are associated with multiple intracranial aneurysms which may rupture or develop. So the authors describe a cervicocephalic FMD patient with a history of right oculomotor palsy in 2000. Angiography revealed bilateral internal carotid artery (ICA) aneurysms and a fusiform aneurysm in right vertebral artery. Typical "string-of-beads" pheno

Extracranial aneurysms of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery.

OBJECTIVE: Extracranial aneurysms of the distal posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) are extremely rare and sometimes difficult to diagnose without an adequate angiogram. We present the first series of 3 patients who were evaluated by the senior author and treated surgically. METHODS AND RESULTS: All 3 patients presented with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Clincial symptoms, included occipital headache, nuchal rigidity, abducens nerve palsy and rapid neurologic deterioration. A unilateral injection of the vertebral artery failed to show the distal contralateral PICA and the aneurysm in

A bioinformatics analysis of the clinicopathological and prognostic significance of FAM64A mRNA expression in gynecological cancers.

FAM64A is a mitotic regulator which promotes cell metaphase-anaphase transition and is highly expressed in a cell-cycle-dependent manner. In this study, we examined the clinicopathological and prognostic significance of FAM64A mRNA expression in gynecological cancers. We conducted a bioinformatics analysis of FAM64A mRNA expression using Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO), The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), xiantao, The University of ALabama at Birmingham CANcer data analysis Portal (UALCAN), and Kaplan-Meier (KM) plotter databases. FAM64A expression was elevated in breast, cervical, endometrial, and

A Combinatorial Approach with Cerebellar Tonsil Suspension to Treating Symptomatic Chiari Malformation Type I in Adults: A Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Primary Chiari malformations (CMs) are congenital defects of the skull base and brain. Among the 4 CM types, type I (CM-I) occurs most frequently and may cause somatosensorimotor, autonomic and vision symptoms. Presently, posterior fossa decompression alone (PFD) or with duraplasty (PFDD) and cerebellar tonsil (CbT) shrinkage tactics are standard treatments, albeit inherent issues. There has been no report on devising CbT suspension (CTS) to manage CM-I. OBJECTIVES: 1) To design a CTS protocol that can be used with CbT coagulation (CTC) and PFDD; 2) to evaluate the regimen for fea

Transvenous embolization for craniocervical junction epidural arteriovenous fistula with a pial feeder aneurysm.

Arteriovenous fistulas at the craniocervical junction are rare vascular malformations with frequent hemorrhagic presentations, which may have a concurrent pial feeder aneurysm. A 65-year-old man presented with subarachnoid hemorrhage and angiography showed an epidural arteriovenous fistula at the C-2 level with an anterior spinal feeder aneurysm without perimedullary venous drainage. Transarterial coil embolization of the ruptured aneurysm and partial Onyx embolization of the shunt led to thrombosis of the aneurysm. However, three years later angiography showed an increased shunt flow and recu

Anterior Atlanto-Occipital Transarticular Screw Fixation: A Radiological Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: In situations in which posterior atlanto-occipital fixation might not be possible or might require supplemental fixation, anterior fixation might add stability in obtaining arthrodesis. The present study aimed to provide a radiographic evaluation of the safety and feasibility in the anterior approach. METHODS: The bilateral craniocervical computed tomography slices of 60 patients were examined. The anterior screw entry point was the lowest point at the middle anterior aspect of C1 (atlas) lateral mass. To avoid hypoglossal canal and craniocerebral injury, the height of the hypoglo

Dwarfism, occult spinal dysraphism, and presacral myxopapillary ependymoma with an epidermoid cyst in a child.

The authors present a case of a child with dwarfism that was noted to be developmentally delayed. Imaging revealed atlantoaxial instability, occult spinal dysraphism, and a presacral mass. Histopathology of the presacral lesion was that of a myxopapillary ependymoma with epidermoid cyst. We believe this to be the first report in the extant medical literature of this constellation of findings in the same patient. However, there are rare reports indicating a possible association of occult spinal dysraphism and the simultaneous occurrence of spinal ependymomas. Further case reports are necessary

[Fracture of the odontoid process in primary myelopathy. Report of a case].

Fractures of the odontoid are reported to contribute in 15% to cervical spine fractures. The clinical findings range between no symptoms at all and sudden death. Neurological deficits are seen in 6 to 25% of these patients. The overall mortality in this group is 3 to 8%. Fractures of the odontoid process combined with primary myelopathy has been reported seldom. We describe a traumatic fracture of the odontoid process with primary myelopathy, the chosen therapy and the follow-up.

Expression and gene regulatory network of S100A16 protein in cervical cancer cells based on data mining.

S100A16 protein belongs to the S100 family of calcium-binding proteins, which is widely distributed in human tissues and highly conserved. S100 calcium-binding proteins possess broad biological functions, such as cancer cell proliferation, apoptosis, tumor metastasis, and inflammation (Nat Rev Cancer 15:96-109, 2015). The S100A16 protein was initially isolated from a cell line derived from astrocytoma. The S100A16 protein, consisting of 103 amino acids, is a small acidic protein with a molecular weight of 11,801.4 Da and an isoelectric point (pI) of 6.28 (Biochem Biophys Res Commun 313:237-244

Stanniocalcin Protein Expression in Female Reproductive Organs: Literature Review and Public Cancer Database Analysis.

Stanniocalcin (STC) 1 and 2 serve as antihyperglycemic polypeptide hormones with critical roles in regulating calcium and phosphate homeostasis. They additionally function as paracrine and/or autocrine factors involved in numerous physiological processes, including female reproduction. STC1 and STC2 contribute to the pathophysiology of several diseases, including female infertility- and pregnancy-associated conditions, and even tumorigenesis of reproductive organs. This comprehensive review highlights the dynamic expression patterns and potential dysregulation of STC1 and STC2, restricted to f

Exencephaly-Anencephaly Sequence Associated with Maxillary Brachygnathia, Spinal Defects, and Palatoschisis in a Male Domestic Cat.

Anencephaly, a severe neural tube defect characterized by the absence of major parts of the brain and skull, is a rare congenital disorder that has been observed in various species, including cats. Considering the uncommon appearance of anencephaly, this paper aims to present anencephaly in a stillborn male kitten from an accidental inbreeding using various paraclinical methods. Histological examination of tissue samples from the cranial region, where parts of the skull were absent, revealed the presence of atypical nerve tissue with neurons and glial cells organized in clusters, surrounded by

[Fenestration of the internal carotid artery in the neck].

Fenestration or duplication of the internal carotid artery is extremely rare. A review of the literature revealed only two such cases by angiography. We present two further cases of internal carotid artery fenestration, incidentally disclosed by angiography. The embryological basis and the clinical significance of this anomalous condition were discussed. Case 1. A 47-year-old woman was admitted to hospital on May 13, 1982, after the first attack of subarachnoid hemorrhage. Four-vessel angiography showed a saccular aneurysm arising at the trifurcation of the right middle cerebral artery. In add

CD155 links tumor immunotype to epithelial-directed precision therapy beyond checkpoint inhibition in cervical cancer.

BACKGROUND: Despite its viral etiology and immunogenic features, cervical cancer shows limited and often short-lived benefit from programmed cell death protein 1 blockade, currently the only approved immunotherapy for this disease. This limitation highlights the need for a deeper understanding of its immune microenvironment to uncover alternative or complementary immunotherapeutic targets that may improve outcomes. METHODS: We integrated spatial proteomic and bulk transcriptomic profiling of the cervical cancer immune landscape. Immune subset markers (CD8, CD4, CD68, FoxP3, NKp46) and clinica

A three-gene expression signature predicts lymph node metastasis in cervical squamous cell carcinoma: development and validation using TCGA and clinical cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Lymph node metastasis (LNM) is a major prognostic determinant in early-stage cervical squamous cell carcinoma (SCC); however, conventional preoperative imaging has demonstrated sensitivities below 60% for sub-centimeter metastases, resulting in treatment misallocation for approximately 20-30% of patients. PURPOSE: This study aimed to develop and validate a minimal gene expression signature that can be performed on routine biopsy specimens to predict preoperative LNM in cervical SCC. METHODS: This retrospective biomarker discovery and validation study had a two-phase design. In th
