Zoonoses and bats: a look from human health viewpoint.

Bats are the most abundant and most widely distributed mammals on the Earth after humans. Except Antarctica and some small remote islands, they are prevalent worldwide. Although the actual role played by bats as reservoir or in disseminating zoonoses is still enigmatic a multitude of zoonotic diseases are known to be associated with bats. Such diseases including viral, bacterial, parasitic, fungal and rickettsial diseases, reported from all over the world including India have been briefed in this article as an informative approach because dramatically increased and diversified human activities

Ecology of Marburg and Ebola viruses: speculations and directions for future research.

Marburg and virulent Ebola viruses are maintained in hosts that are rare and have little contact with humans or do not readily transmit virus. Bats (particularly solitary microchiropteran species) are leading contenders as reservoir hosts. Virus transfer to humans occurs by contact with the primary reservoir or via an intermediate animal that acquired infection from the reservoir and is, in turn, hunted by humans. An interesting possibility is that filoviruses may be arthropod or plant viruses, with non-blood-feeding arthropods transmitting the virus to intermediate hosts or humans during oral…

Significance of the paralemniscal tegmental area for audio-motor control in the moustached bat, Pteronotus p. parnellii: the afferent off efferent connections of the paralemniscal area.

The paralemniscal tegmental area has been determined in the brain of the New World moustached bat, Pteronotus p. parnellii, by electrical microstimulation eliciting echolocation calls and pinna movements. It is located in the dorsal tegmentum rostral and medial to the dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus and is characterized by medium sized and large neurons. Tracer injections (WGA-HRP) showed that the most intense input to the paralemniscal tegmental area originates in the intermediate and deep layers of the homolateral superior colliculus. The strong projections from the ipsi- and contral

Special relationship between mitochondria and hypolemmal nerve terminals in salivary glands of some bats.

BACKGROUND: Hypolemmal nerve terminals, which are abundant in many types of salivary glands, are naked axons that have penetrated the basement membrane to take up a position between adjacent parenchymal cells. Although they may form vesicle-filled varicosities, there usually are no obvious morphological indications as to which cell actually is being innervated. METHODS: Specimens of over 200 species of bats were live-trapped and their major salivary glands extirpated and prepared for electron microscopic examination. RESULTS: In 13 species of bats out of the more than 200, mitochondria-hypol

Topography and extent of visual-field representation in the superior colliculus of the megachiropteran Pteropus.

It has been proposed that flying foxes (genus Pteropus) have a primate-like pattern of representation in the superficial layers of the super … a specialized, primate-like pattern. These observations are consistent with the hypothesis that megachiropterans are members of a group that branched off early during the differentiation of primates from basal mammals.

Microfibril-microvessel connections in the uvea and optic nerve of the mammalian eye.

Light- and electron-microscopic examination of arterioles, venules and capillaries of the eyes of several mammalian species has shown that the microfibrils of ocular elastic tissue attach to microvascular basement membranes throughout the uvea (iris, ciliary body, choroid) and optic nerve. Although described sporadically in prior investigations, this report shows that the connections are a common feature of the mammalian eye. The connections appear most numerous at venules and capillaries and are sparse at arterioles. The connections may provide a mechanism by which perivascular elastic tissue

Origin of ascending projections to inferior colliculus in the mustache bat, Pteronotus parnellii.

The origins of pathways to the inferior colliculus of the mustache bat were identified by retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP). A specific goal of this study was to obtain evidence that would help determine whether the nuclei, shown in the previous paper to have unusual cytoarchitectural features, are unique to bats, or whether they are homologous to areas that are not well differentiated in other mammals. The auditory pathways in the lower brain stem of Pteronotus appear to conform to the same basic organization as in other mammals: After injection of HRP into one inferior col

Venezuelan encephalitis virus infection in neotropical bats. II. Experimental infections.

Eighty-nine Neotropical bats of five species were inoculated subcutaneously with epizootic or enzootic strains of Venezuelan encephalitis (VE) virus. Viremia was detected in 92.5% of all bats, but no illness attributable to virus infection was observed. Detectable viremias averaged slightly over 4 days in Artibeus jamaicensis and A. lituratus, and 2.8 days in Phyllostomus discolor, and maximal viremia titers in these three species averaged 6.9, 6.6, and 4.6 log10 SMicLD50 per ml of blood, respectively. In general Artibeus developed and maintained detectable levels of both hemagglutination-inhi

Mapping the geodispersal and evolutionary dynamics of regional Nipah virus strain in Bangladesh.

Nipah virus (NiV) is a zoonotic pathogen causing severe respiratory and neurological disease in humans, with high fatality rates, primarily transmitted from fruit bats to humans through bat-tainted raw date palm sap and fruits. NiV outbreaks have occurred almost annually across 34 of 64 districts in Bangladesh. The study investigated the geodispersal patterns and evolutionary phylodynamics of NiV, aiding in more effective outbreak management strategies in Bangladesh. Phylodynamic and geographic evolutionary analyses were conducted using the nucleoprotein (N) gene sequence (n = 23) isolated fro

Targeting of conserved spike epitopes enables broad antibody neutralisation of diverse bat sarbecoviruses.

The continuing evolution of SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern, and the increasing spillover potential of sarbecoviruses into the human population presents an important and urgent need to discover cross-reactive monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) for future therapeutic use and identify conserved neutralising epitopes that can be used for rationale design of broadly protective sarbecovirus vaccines. Here we study the neutralising epitopes on WIV-1 Spike of three mAbs that confer broad sarbecovirus and SARS-CoV-2 variant neutralisation, including XEC, JN.1, and XFG. mAb V1WT_06 binds a highly conserved RB

Tissue distribution study of Flying fox retrovirus (FFRV) infection in the endangered Spectacled flying fox (Pteropus conspicillatus).

This study investigated tissue distribution and host-associated factors of Flying fox retrovirus (FFRV) infection in the endangered Spectacled flying fox (Pteropus conspicillatus). Blood, lymph node, spleen and liver samples from 100 wild bats were initially screened for FFRV proviral DNA by multiplex real-time PCR, with positives confirmed by conventional/nested PCR, Sanger sequencing and BLAST analysis. Screening for viral RNA then was performed in all tissues from provirus-positive bats. FFRV proviral DNA was detected in 22% of bats, with the highest detection frequencies in lymph nodes, sp

Neotropical bats as sentinels for emerging zoonoses in Central America: A case study identifying Trypanosoma cruzi in bats from Belize using metagenomic next-generation sequencing.

Emerging zoonoses remain a global public health concern. Surveillance of infectious and vector-borne diseases is vital for predicting and mitigating detrimental effects of zoonotic spillover events. Beyond assessing what microorganisms are circulating in specific environments, it is important to understand how potential reservoir hosts, especially animals such as bats, participate in pathogen transmission. Bats can host and potentially spread infections caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa. However, bats can also act as sentinels that test positive for pathogenic microorganisms wit

Cohorts of immature Pteropus bats show interannual variation in Hendra virus serology.

Understanding the drivers of seasonal disease outbreaks remains a fundamental challenge in disease ecology. Periodic outbreaks can be driven by several seasonally varying factors, including pulses of susceptible individuals through births, changes in host behaviour and social aggregation and variation in host immunity. However, when these potential drivers overlap temporally, isolating their relative contributions to outbreak patterns becomes challenging. We studied Hendra virus, a zoonotic pathogen with seasonal spillovers from bats to horses and humans. Multiple seasonal factors have been hy

Cochlear representation of wideband biosonar sounds and the emergence of neural oscillations.

Echolocating big brown bats and bottlenose dolphins broadcast wideband ultrasonic echolocation calls in the baseband to sense their surroundings. Even though these species inhabit different media and emit echolocation calls with different spectra, both show similar perceptual acuity: They determine target range from echo delay, they detect changes in echo delay on a microsecond scale, and they perceive ultrasonic phase. These perceptual performances are too acute to understand on the basis of single neuron responses, and even neural population responses do not reach the required behavioral val
