This study describes which antigens of Fasciola hepatica are present in the feces of patients with chronic fascioliasis and in the feces of rats infected experimentally with F. hepatica metacercariae. Using a Western blot assay technique with hyperimmune serum obtained from excretory-secretory antigens of adult F. hepatica, we found in the patients' feces antigens of possible diagnostic interest, with molecular weights of 14, 19, 20, 23, 25, 32, 46, 51, and 62 kilodaltons (kDa). Two estrogen binding proteins (Mr = 50,000 and 65,000) were purified from rabbit uterine cytosol using an improved procedure for affinity chromatography on diethylstilbestrol-agarose. The estrogen receptors were radioiodinated while adsorbed to the resin using the lactoperoxidase or Bolton-Hunter techniques. Sequences 19-29 and 28-39 of toxin II of the North African scorpion Androctonus australis Hector have been synthesized. Using rapid and reusable affinity columns, we established a method to measure beta-endorphin (beta END) and beta-lipotropin (beta LPH) separately in human plasma. Serum samples from six cats with experimentally induced asthma were used to purify feline IgE using gel filtration and affinity chromatography. The resultant IgE, evaluated for purity by immunoelectrophoresis (IEP) and reactivity by Prausnitz-Kustner (PK) testing, was used to develop polyclonal rabbit anti-feline IgE antisera. A confirmation procedure is described for detection of residues of six tetracyclines in bovine milk, and oxytetracycline in shrimp. Residues are extracted from milk or shrimp tissue using metal chelate affinity chromatography. The case of a 74-year-old female who developed toxic epidermal necrolysis (30% TBSA) is presented. Despite early, aggressive treatment, the patient developed severe wound sepsis and multiple-system organ failure. The fulminant wound sepsis was preceded by early endotoxemia.
