Associations between extreme precipitation and acute gastro-intestinal illness due to cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis in an urban Canadian drinking water system (1997-2009).

Drinking water related infections are expected to increase in the future due to climate change. Understanding the current links between these infections and environmental factors is vital to understand and reduce the future burden of illness. We investigated the relationship between weekly reported cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis (n = 7,422), extreme precipitation (>90th percentile), drinking water turbidity, and preceding dry periods in a drinking water system located in greater Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada (1997-2009) using distributed lag non-linear Poisson regression models adjuste

Climate change, resource insecurities and sexual and reproductive health among young adolescents in Kenya: a multi-method qualitative inquiry.

INTRODUCTION: Growing evidence supports linkages between climate change and extreme weather events (EWEs) and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) among adults. Yet knowledge gaps persist regarding climate-related experiences and pathways to SRH among young adolescents (YA). We conducted a multi-method qualitative study to explore climate change-related factors and linkages with SRH among YA aged 10-14 years in Kenya. METHODS: This six-site study was conducted in Nairobi's urban slum Mathare; Naivasha's flower farming community; Kisumu's fishing community; Isiolo's nomadic and pastoralist com

Changes in temperature, rainfall and snow cover during the reproductive season of Arctic-breeding birds.

Arctic warming is rapidly altering hydroclimatic conditions, yet its implications for the timing and reliability of terrestrial breeding environments remain poorly quantified. This study assesses how changes in temperature, snow dynamics, and rainfall extremes affect the snow-free reproductive window across Arctic tundra systems. We combined ERA5 reanalysis (1940-2024), daily output from ten CMIP6 Earth System Models, and long-term equilibrium simulations (400 years) from EC-Earth3 under present-day and doubled CO₂ conditions. Analyses focused on lowland tundra regions and quantified changes i

Plant community responses to climate change in the Zayandeh-Rud Basin, Iran: Does woody plant encroachment follow global patterns?

Arid and semi-arid ecosystems are highly sensitive to climate warming and drying, yet community-level responses in the Middle East remain poorly quantified. This study assesses the potential impacts of climate change on plant community distributions in the Zayandeh-Rud basin, central Iran, and evaluates whether woody plant encroachment follows global patterns. Species distribution models were applied to project current and future (2050 and 2070) distributions of major vegetation communities, including Semi Steppe-Shrub, Semi Steppe-Perennial Herbaceous, Alpine Vegetation, Semi Desert-Salty Pla

The Association Between Heat Stress and Child Stunting, Wasting, and Underweight Under Varying Vegetation Covers in Ethiopia.

Climate change has significantly contributed to rising malnutrition rates, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. However, evidence linking heat stress to child nutritional status remains limited. This study estimated the association between heat stress exposure and severe stunting, wasting and underweight among rural children across areas with varying vegetation density. We used data from Ethiopia's Food and Nutrition Strategy Baseline Survey, a population-based cross-sectional study conducted between 2021 and 2023. Our study population included a total of 7166 children aged 0-59 m

For better and for worse: Evidence of differential susceptibility to environmental adversity in youth substance use from the cVEDA cohort.

BACKGROUND: Familial vulnerability and environmental adversity are both associated with adolescent substance-use, yet their joint effects remain insufficiently characterized. This study examined their interaction using a latent gene-environment (GxE) framework in the cVEDA cohort. METHODS: The sample included 3786 adolescents and young adults aged 12-24 years. Familial vulnerability was indexed as the family-history density (FHD) scores derived from the pedigree for medical and psychiatric conditions, adjusted for degree of relatedness. Environmental adversity was captured using measures of c

Harnessing artificial intelligence for dengue forecasting in climate-vulnerable regions: A narrative review with insights from Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Vietnam.

Dengue poses a mounting public-health threat in climate-sensitive, rapidly urbanizing settings. We conducted a narrative review with systematic elements to synthesize advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) for dengue forecasting and to appraise their operational relevance to Ba Ria-Vung Tau (BRVT), Vietnam. Structured searches of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science (2010 to 15 Dec 2024, English; peer-reviewed only) identified 20 eligible studies. For transparency, we report PRISMA 2020 counts; no meta-analysis was performed because of heterogeneity in populations, ou

Ambient temperature and term birthweight in Latin American cities.

BACKGROUND: Extreme temperatures may lead to adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes, including low birthweight. Studies on the impact of temperature on birthweight have been inconclusive due to methodological challenges related to operationalizing temperature exposure, the definitions of exposure windows, accounting for gestational age, and a limited geographic scope. METHODS: We combined data on individual-level term live births (N≈15 million births) from urban areas in Brazil, Chile, and Mexico from 2010 to 2015 from the SALURBAL study (Urban Health in Latin America) with high-resolution dail

Temporal dynamics and impact of climate factors on the incidence of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in central Tunisia.

BACKGROUND: Old world Zoonotic Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (ZCL) is a vector-borne human disease caused by Leishmania major, a unicellular eukaryotic parasite transmitted by pool blood-feeding sand flies mainly to wild rodents, such as Psammomys obesus. The human beings who share the rodent and sand fly habitats can be subverted as both sand fly blood resource. ZCL is endemic in the Middle East, Central Asia, Subsaharan and North Africa. Like other vector-borne diseases, the incidence of ZCL displayed by humans varies with environmental and climate factors. However, so far no study has addressed t

Ocean circulation changes rather than global warming drove temperature trends across the Miocene Climatic Optimum.

Early-to-Middle Miocene [23 to 13.8 million years ago (Ma)] climates were ∼6° to 9°C warmer than today. Around 16.9 Ma, benthic foraminiferal oxygen isotope (δ18O) records suggest pronounced warming, known as the Miocene Climatic Optimum (MCO) onset. However, explaining this putative global warming with carbon dioxide (CO2) forcing faces challenges in terms of timing and forcing magnitude. Our new biomarker-based ocean temperature records, combined with published data, reveal no substantial mean global upper ocean warming across the MCO. Instead, temperature changes differ considerably between

The climatic factors influencing the occurrence of dengue hemorrhagic fever in Thailand.

The aim of this study was to determine the independent effects of climatic factors: rainfall, temperature and relative humidity, on the occurrence of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) in Thailand after adjustment for cyclical pattern. Data regarding monthly DHF reported cases by province, monthly rainfall, rain-days, average daily maximum temperature, average daily minimum temperature and average relative humidity, and mid-year province population from 1978 to 1997 (240 months) in 73 provinces were collected from various governmental departments. The general equation: Incidence of DHF = constant

Modeling Lyme disease transmission.

Lyme disease, a typical tick-borne disease, imposes increasing global public health challenges. A growing body of theoretical models have been proposed to better understand various factors determining the disease risk, which not only enrich our understanding on the ecological cycle of disease transmission but also promote new theoretical developments on model formulation, analysis and simulation. In this paper, we provide a review about the models and results we have obtained recently on modeling and analyzing Lyme disease transmission, with the purpose to highlight various aspects in the ecol

Prediction of Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome Under Future Climate Scenarios in Chuzhou, China.

Objective: Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) poses a significant public health concern in China and has the potential for severe morbidity and mortality. Previous studies on SFTS have focused primarily on analyzing its incidence under existing climate conditions, often overlooking the impacts of future climate change on the disease's distribution. Moreover, the key factors influencing SFTS transmission identified in prior research are limited and lack a comprehensive consideration of multiple environmental and socioeconomic factors in specific regions. Methods: In this study,

Extreme climate and human interventions driving flood dynamics in arid inland rivers: regional and global perspectives.

Flooding plays a vital role in sustaining hydrological cycles in arid regions. While recent advances in flood characterization and attribution have enhanced management and forecasting, limited understanding remains on how extreme climate change and human interventions influence flood generation and propagation from the perspectives of global atmosphere-ocean interactions and regional runoff process. Taking the Tarim River as a case study, this research integrates atmospheric numerical simulations and hydrological analysis to identify key circulation pattern changes and reveal mechanisms behind

Associations of temperature and precipitation with malaria in children under 5: A multi-country study in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Climate change is a significant global challenge with major impacts on human health. It directly affects vector-borne diseases such as malaria by expanding vector ranges, boosting reproduction and biting rates, and shortening pathogen incubation periods. This study aimed to evaluate the association of temperature and precipitation with malaria transmission among children under five in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). We employed an analytical cross-sectional design to examine the relationship between temperature, precipitation, and malaria transmission among 15,009 children aged under five in six SSA

Heterosexist microaggressions, student academic experience and perception of campus climate: Findings from an Italian higher education context.

While overt instances of harassment and violence towards LGBQ+ individuals have decreased in recent years, subtler forms of heterosexism still shape the social and academic experience of students in higher education contexts. Such forms, defined as microaggressions, frequently include environmental slights that communicate hostile and derogatory messages about one's sexual-minority status. However, there is some evidence suggesting that environmental microaggressions have deleterious effects on all students, regardless of their sexual orientation. The aim of the current study was to examine ho

Parents of children and adolescents with severe mental retardation: stress, family resources, normalization, and their application for out-of-home placement.

The study examined out-of-home applications of 88 Israeli parents who had younger children and adolescents with severe mental retardation and, in particular, the question of whether parental application for placement is a function of their marital status, level of education, children's age, and parental stress, family environment (climate), social support, and attitudes toward normalization. Multiple regression analysis showed that five predictors had significant correlations with parental application: parental stress (high), social support (less), attitudes toward normalization (favorable), f
