The structure of the interface between epidermis and dermis was examined in normal skin and in hypertrophic scars using the scanning electron microscope. The hypertrophic scar was found to show a completely different structure of fibrous tissue (collagen) at this surface when compared to normal skin. We describe the radiographic, gross morphologic and microscopic appearance of a pleural collagenous nodule presenting as a "solitary nodule." We believe that this lesion is within the spectrum of "pleural plaques," an associated condition present in our patient who had a history of potential asbestos exposure. Awareness of this probably rare variant of a common abnormality may obviate the need for a diagnostic thoracotomy in certain circumstances.

The effects of a variety of retinoids on collagenase and gelatinase expression have been examined in skin fibroblast cultures derived from normal volunteers and from patients with the hereditary blistering disorder, recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa. Both 13-cis- and all-trans-retinoic acid were effective inhibitors of collagenase production in both cell types. The effects of Microfibrillar Collagen Hemostat (MCH) and Gelfoam after surgical implantation into incision sites of the liver, kidney, and brain were studied in beagle dogs, rabbits, and beagle dogs, respectively. A woman, aged 26 years, who died of progressively worsening demyelinating encephalomyelitis in the course of 4 years is reported. The neuropathological findings included large subcortical softenings in the cerebral hemispheres, tiny perivenous demyelinated foci in their neighborhood and scattered in the white matter.
