Epidemiology of selected communicable diseases in Rwanda: a comprehensive analysis of the prevalence of major infectious diseases in Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: Communicable diseases remain a major public health challenge in Rwanda, contributing significantly to morbidity and mortality. Despite notable progress in reducing the burden of infectious diseases such as malaria, HIV/AIDS, and tuberculosis, recent threats, including Marburg virus infections and other emerging outbreaks, underscore the need for renewed vigilance and strengthened disease control strategies. Transmission occurs through direct or indirect contact and is influenced by socioeconomic, environmental, and demographic factors. This study provides a comprehensive analysis o

The public health burden of diabetes mellitus and thyroid disease: twin epidemics.

Thyroid dysfunction and diabetes mellitus frequently occur together, with evidence showing higher rates of each condition in individuals affected by the other. Beyond their statistical association, emerging research indicates shared mechanisms involving autoimmunity, obesity, ageing and insulin resistance, which might explain their bidirectional relationship. This Review synthesizes current evidence on these links, with a particular focus on how thyroid dysfunction influences glycaemic control and how antidiabetic therapies affect thyroid function. Unlike earlier reviews, we frame thyroid diso

[Canton Hospital and public health in Canton].

Canton Hospital was not only the most influential missionary hospital in South China, but also the first one brought the concept and practice of public health to Guangzhou. In the late Qing Dynasty, it conducted free vaccination, plague treatment, health education and so on, demonstrating the importance of public health to the people. In the period of the Republic of China, it extensively cooperated with the government and social organizations in developing school health, maternal and child health, communicable disease control and epidemiological investigations to actively serve the social gro…

Viral and vector zoonotic exploitation of a homo-sociome memetic complex.

As most newly characterized emerging infectious diseases are considered to be zoonotic, a modern pre-eminence ascribed within this classification lies clearly within the viral taxonomic realm. In particular, RNA viruses deserve special concern given their documented impact on conservation biology, veterinary medicine and public health, with an unprecedented ability to promote an evolutionary host-pathogen arms race from the ultimate infection and immunity perspective. However, besides the requisite molecular/gross anatomical and physiological bases for infectious diseases to transmit from one

Mixed methods evaluation of a low-carbohydrate high-fat nutrition education program for women from underserved communities in South Africa.

South Africa faces a dual burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and communicable diseases, exacerbated by the high consumption of processed foods. The Eat Better South Africa (EBSA) program implements community-based low-carbohydrate, high-fat (LCHF) interventions to address these issues. This study evaluated the impact of EBSA's 6-week program on the metabolic health and well-being of 32 women from underserved communities. It assessed outcomes before, immediately after, and six months post-intervention (n = 21). Quantitative findings showed significant improvements in key health markers.

Thoughts, beliefs and concepts concerning infectious childhood diseases of physicians practicing homeopathic, anthroposophic and conventional medicine - a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Physicians who include complementary medicine in their practice are thought to have an understanding of health and disease different from that of colleagues practicing conventional medicine. The aim of this study was to identify and compare the thoughts and concepts concerning infectious childhood diseases (measles, mumps, rubella, chickenpox, pertussis and scarlet fever) of physicians practicing homeopathic, anthroposophic and conventional medicine. METHODS: This qualitative study used semistructured interviews. Participating physicians were either general practitioners or pediat

Kenyan school book knowledge for water, sanitation, hygiene and health education interventions: Disconnect, integration or opportunities?

BACKGROUND: Schools, depending on their access to and quality of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and the implementation of healthy behaviours, can be critical for the control and spread of many infectious diseases, including COVID-19. Schools provide opportunities for pupils to learn about the importance of hygiene and WASH-related practice, and build healthy habits and skills, with beneficial medium- and long-term consequences particularly in low- and middle-income countries: reducing pupils' absenteeism due to diseases, promoting physical, mental and social health, and improving learnin

National and international policies to mitigate disease threats.

To devise and implement effective health policy, we must define the problem, choose the tools, craft the policy, build consensus, set goals and deadlines, raise funds and take action. Success or failure depends on the perception of risk, the strength of the underlying science, the efficacy of the technology, ownership and intellectual property, the conflict between individual and public health, the choice of weaker (guidelines) and stronger (law) policy instruments, the level of public interest, political opportunity, institutional inertia, mechanisms for enforcement and who foots the bill. [Social networks, risk dyads, and their role in the epidemiology and prevention of drug related infectious diseases].

In the case of risk behaviors where infection transmission occurs through social relationships (e.g. via sharing drugs and injecting equipment, or through sexual relations), prevention should follow (among others) the path of the social network. Previous studies have shown that sharing of injecting equipment is more likely to occur in larger and denser networks and that more popular individuals are more likely to engage in risk behaviors, become infected or transmit infection. Primary targets of social network interventions are central individuals, and information diffuses from them to the mor

Emerging or re-emerging bacterial zoonoses: factors of emergence, surveillance and control.

Surveillance and control of emerging bacterial zoonoses is essential in order to prevent both human and animal deaths and to avoid potential economic disorders created by trade barriers or a ban on free circulation of human or animal populations. An increased risk of exposition to zoonotic agents, the breakdown of the host's defenses, the emergence of bacterial strains resistant to antibiotics and their widespread distribution as well as conjunctural causes associated with the action or inaction of man have been identified as the main factors leading to the emergence or re-emergence of bacteri

The emerging nosocomial pathogens Cryptosporidium, Escherichia coli O157:H7, Helicobacter pylori, and hepatitis C: epidemiology, environmental survival, efficacy of disinfection, and control measures.

New and emerging infectious diseases pose a threat to public health and may be responsible for nosocomial outbreaks. Cryptosporidium parvum and Escherichia coli are gastrointestinal pathogens that have caused nosocomial infections via person-to-person transmission, environmental contamination, or contaminated water or food. Helicobacter pylori has been transmitted via inadequately disinfected endoscopes. Finally, hepatitis C may be acquired by healthcare personnel by percutaneous or mucous membrane exposure to blood or between patients by use of contaminated blood products or via environmental

[Interpretation for diagnosis of Yersiniosis].

Yersiniosis is one of the "other infectious diarrhea" of the notifiable infectious diseases and also an important food-borne disease. However, it lacked the basis or standard for diagnosis. The Chinese Preventive Medicine Association coordinated experienced researchers from National Institute for Communicable Disease Control and Prevention, China CDC and other institutes to produce the group standard entitled "Diagnosis of Yersiniosis" (T/CPMA 005-2019). Based on the principle of "legality, scientificity, advancement, and feasibility" , the standard gives a clear definition for Yerisiniosis, s…

Foodborne general outbreaks of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli O157 in England and Wales 1992-2002: where are the risks?

Between 1 January 1992 and 31 December 2002, Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli O157 (STEC O157) accounted for 44 of the 1645 foodborne general outbreaks of infectious intestinal disease reported to the Health Protection Agency Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre. These outbreaks, although rare, were characterized by severe infection, with 169 hospital admissions and five deaths reported. STEC O157 outbreaks were compared with other pathogens to identify factors associated with this pathogen. Single risk variable analysis and logistic regression were employed. Two distinct aetiologies

National enhanced surveillance of meningococcal disease in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, January 1999-June 2001.

Enhanced surveillance of meningococcal disease (ESMD) was implemented nationally across ten regions of England, Wales and Northern Ireland from 1 January 1999. It aims to deliver more sensitive surveillance than laboratory reporting by including clinically diagnosed but laboratory unconfirmed cases. Consultants in Communicable Disease Control (CsCDC) report all clinically diagnosed cases of meningococcal disease (MD) to the Regional Epidemiologist in the relevant regional unit of the Public Health Laboratory Service (PHLS) Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre (CDSC). These reports are reco…

Mitochondria Quality Control and Male Fertility.

Mitochondria are pivotal to cellular homeostasis, performing vital functions such as bioenergetics, biosynthesis, and cell signalling. Proper maintenance of these processes is crucial to prevent disease development and ensure optimal cell function. Mitochondrial dynamics, including fission, fusion, biogenesis, mitophagy, and apoptosis, maintain mitochondrial quality control, which is essential for overall cell health. In male reproduction, mitochondria play a pivotal role in germ cell development and any defects in mitochondrial quality can have serious consequences on male fertility. Reactive

Addressing malnutrition in young children in South Africa. Setting the national context for paediatric food-based dietary guidelines.

Despite various national nutrition and primary healthcare programmes being initiated in South Africa over the last decade, child health has deteriorated. This is seen by the rise in infant and child mortality rates, the high prevalence of preventable childhood diseases, e.g. diarrhoea and lower respiratory tract infections, and the coexistence of under-nutrition along with HIV/AIDS. Poor dietary intake, food insecurity and poor quality of basic services prevail within this precarious causal web. The national Integrated Nutrition Programme is a comprehensive nutrition strategy that focuses on c

Community health workers and promotores de salud: a tiered framework for infectious disease prevention and care among California agricultural workers.

Agricultural workers in the United States face a disproportionate burden of infectious diseases, including tuberculosis, HIV, coccidioidomycosis, viral hepatitis, and COVID-19, driven by occupational exposures, crowded housing, poverty, and limited healthcare access. Despite this burden, farmworkers have among the lowest rates of healthcare utilization of any US working population, and traditional clinic-based delivery models are poorly suited to the realities of agricultural labor. Community health workers (CHWs), known as promotores de salud in Latino communities, offer a well-established st
