HIV/STD prevalence among men who have sex with men in Chengdu, China and associated risk factors for HIV infection.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of HIV and selected sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Chengdu, China, and the risk factors associated with HIV infection. METHODS: A cross-sectional study using a snowball sampling method was conducted from March to July 2007. Participants were asked to complete a questionnaire about sexual history, high-risk behaviors, STD infection history, HIV knowledge and testing, and an assessment of depression. Blood samples were taken for antibody testing for HIV, herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2), and syphilis. RESULTS: A t

Effects of fear of abuse and possible STI acquisition on the sexual behavior of young African American women.

OBJECTIVES: We examined the interactive effects of fear of abuse and knowledge of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) on sexual risk behaviors in a sample of young African American women. METHODS: We recruited 715 young African American women aged 15 to 21 years from a variety of health clinics and assessed them for fear of abuse because of negotiating condom use, knowledge of STIs, and several sexual risk behaviors. RESULTS: Overall, 75% of young African American women reported inconsistent condom use in the past 60 days. Surprisingly, under relatively higher levels of fear, young women

Contraception and induced abortions for women of reproductive age married in recent years in rural areas of Shandong, China.

BACKGROUND: In 2001, the Chinese Government published the Population and Family Planning Law which gave citizens the right to know the facts about, and to choose, methods of birth control. Since then, the percentage use of different contraceptive methods has changed. More and more women have been using male condoms for birth control, which has resulted in an increasing prevalence of induced abortions of unintended pregnancies in recent years. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between choice of contraception methods and rates of induced abortion in the rural areas of Shandong. MATERI…

A cognitive analysis of college students' explanations for engaging in unprotected sexual intercourse.

Young adults, including college students, engage in high levels of unprotected sexual activity despite relatively high rates of HIV/STI and … rcourse unprotected against infection or unwanted pregnancy. Less than a quarter of the sample used condoms or oral contraceptives consistently. Participants primarily viewed condoms as a means of preventing pregnancy; few described disease prevention as a main motivation for their use. Prevalence of sexual activity and family-planning use among undergraduates in Southwest Nigeria.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of sexual activity and family-planning use among undergraduates in a private tertiary institution in Nigeria. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 283 undergraduate students. RESULTS: Out of 283 students, 245 (86.6%) are sexually active in the last month. Out of these 245, 219 (89%) are currently using a family-planning method. In the study population, the percentages of awareness, ever use, and current users are 89%, 77%, and 75%, respectively. The most commonly known, ever used, and currently used contraceptive is condom followed in descending order by c

Risk behaviours of Hong Kong male residents travelling to mainland China: a potential bridge population for HIV infection.

The objective was to assess levels of high-risk sexual behaviour, condom use, sexually transmitted disease (STD) history and AIDS-related perceptions among Hong Kong men returning from China by land; 1,254 systematically sampled subjects were interviewed. Of respondents, 32.5% had sexual intercourse with a commercial sex worker (CSW) in China in the past six months; 11.2% have done so on this trip. A third of those who reported having sex with CSWs did so without a condom. A fifth had a history of STDs: seventy per cent of respondents who did not use a condom with a CSW would not use a condom

Use of female controlled microbicidal products for HIV risk reduction.

Many over-the-counter microbicidal contraceptive methods reduce the risk of acquiring sexually transmitted diseases. This pilot project compared the use of female controlled barrier methods in an extremely high-risk population of low-income drug abusing women following an intervention designed to promote HIV risk reduction and barrier use. An HIV transmission risk reduction interactive intervention emphasizing self-esteem, assertiveness and sexual negotiation was offered to 41 drug dependent women. Participants were randomly assigned to one of two conditions, a male and female condom condition

Interim outcomes for a community-based program to prevent perinatal HIV transmission.

The AIDS Prevention for Pediatric Life Enrichment (APPLE) project is a community-based program to prevent perinatal HIV infection by preventing infection in women. One project component tested a primary prevention model developed from principles of cognitive social learning theory which used street outreach and community-targeted small media materials to increase the use of condoms. Formative research was used to explore community perceptions about HIV/AIDS and to design media materials. Program evaluation employed a two-community, time series, quasi-experimental design. Annual street surveys …

Sexual behavior and status for human immunodeficiency virus type 1 among homosexual and bisexual males in Mexico City.

The authors examined sexual behaviors, the seroprevalence of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), and condom use among 2,314 homosexual and bisexual men tested during 1988-1989 at the AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) National Center in Mexico City. Bisexuals constituted 24% of the sample; the seroprevalence rate was lower for bisexuals than homosexuals (21 vs. 34%). In logistic regressions, HIV-1 seropositivity was independently related to age, education, pattern of insertive/receptive behavior in anal sex, lifetime number of male sex partners, having sex with someone with AID

Sociodemographic correlates of contraceptive use among sexually active 15-year-old schoolchildren: a cross-sectional study in Albania.

BACKGROUND: Measuring contraceptive use and its sociodemographic distribution among teenagers is crucial for informing targeted sexual health education and equitable interventions. Our aim was to assess the prevalence and sociodemographic correlates of contraceptive use among sexually active adolescents. METHODS: A cross-sectional study, conducted in Albania in 2022, included a nationwide representative sample of 1877 schoolchildren aged 15 years (55% girls; overall response 96%). Data on condom use, contraceptive pill use and sociodemographic characteristics were collected. Binary logistic r

Improving visualization of the cervix during pelvic exams: A simulation using a physical model of the speculum and human vagina as a steppingstone to reducing disparities in gynecological cancers.

Satisfaction and Condomless Anal Sex at Sexual Debut and Sexual Risk Among Young Black Same-Sex Attracted Men.

First sex may be a sentinel event crucial to understanding sexual health trajectories of young Black same-sex attracted men (YBSSAM). We sought to understand whether satisfaction, condomless anal sex, and contextual factors during first sex were associated with sexual risk and recent condom use in YBSSAM. A total of 201 YBSSAM aged 15-24 years completed an Internet survey exploring first sex, current condom use, and sexual risk. High risk was defined as ≥3 of the following: new/concurrent sex partners, STI history, and no/inconsistent condom use. Multivariate logistic regression assessed the a

Factors associated with contraceptive choice and inconsistent method use, United States, 2004.

CONTEXT: Pregnancies among contraceptive users account for nearly half of all unintended pregnancies and are almost entirely due to inconsistent or incorrect contraceptive use. Understanding what factors contribute to inconsistent contraceptive behavior can help efforts to reduce unintended pregnancy. METHODS: In 2004, a nationally representative sample of women aged 18-44 using reversible contraceptive methods were surveyed to examine factors associated with contraceptive choice and with inconsistent use of the pill and condoms. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were used to examine the da…
