PURPOSE: Catheter-based cryoablation (cryo) has proven to be as effective as radiofrequency energy (RF) ablation for the treatment of arrhythmias. Nevertheless, the duration of cryoapplications has been reported as being significantly longer than RF applications.

A 21-year-old male patient underwent radiofrequency catheter ablation for refractory attacks of supraventricular tachycardia. One month after the procedure, he developed recurrent atrioventricular nodal re-entrant tachycardia, for which percutaneous cryoablation was performed. Programmed atrial stimulation at the end of cryoablation did not induce an atrio-His (AH) jump or tachycardia. During a four-month follow-up without any medications, the patient was free of any signs of tachycardia.

Retinoschisis is a vitreo retinal dystrophy characterized by splitting of the neuroretinal layers. The paper presents two cases of retinoschisis associated with retinal detachment. As a particularity, one patient was diagnosed with von Willebrand disease and the other one, with otomandibular dysostosis (Francois-Haustrade). There are presented therapeutical methods used in this two cases: Laser, Argon photocoagulation, transscleral cryopexia, scleral buckling and also the functional and anatomical results.

From January 1986 to December 1991 we examined the eyes of 206 infants born at Westmead Hospital, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit who were less than 29 weeks' gestation at birth to determine the incidence of retinopathy of prematurity. Eighty-five infants (41.3%) had no retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in either eye, 82 infants had stages 1 or 2 ROP (39.8%), 29 had stage 3 ROP (14.1%) and 11 had stage 4 ROP (5.3%). The Multicenter Trial of Cryotherapy for Retinopathy of Prematurity previously reported reduced incidence of both poor structural and functional outcomes after cryotherapy. A total of 23 cases of human papillomavirus-associated epidermoid cysts, including one presented here, have been reported in Japan. A review of the literature revealed that the appearance of eosinophilic intracellular substances and that of vacuolar substances in the horny layer of cysts characterize these cases. High detection of human papillomavirus, the pathological features in these cases, and the observation of our case from the onset in which verrucous lesions had preceded a cyst may favor the possibility that HPV would directly produce cysts in these cases.

Prospective examination of the ocular fundi was carried out in the newborn female sibling of a girl with incontinentia pigmenti and bilateral retinopathy. At age 3 months the new baby's peripheral retina was found to be avascular in both eyes. The tonographic results in the prospective study carried out by the authors showed that there is a two-phase reaction of the aqueous dynamics after cyclocryotherapy. In the first period, 1 to 3 weeks post-operatively, the aqueous flow decreases. Subsequently it recovers and almost reaches preoperative values. In this stage the outflow facility increases remarkably and is thus the main cause of the reduction in intraocular pressure. There is a close correlation between the changes in outflow and the widening of the chamber angle which can be seen by gonioscopy.
