Echinococcus granulosus larvae can cause cystic echinococcosis (CE, also known as hydatid disease) in humans. The latent phase of hydatid di … was started on albendazole. A subsequent diagnostic percutaneous puncture with direct microscopy of cyst fluid revealed parasitological evidence of echinococcosis. This case report shows that CE can present with giant cysts also at very young age and should be considered as a possible diagnosis in all children with giant abdominal cysts.

The role of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in diagnosing the ovarian cyst was reviewed with emphasis on its diagnostic value of endometrial cyst. 94 cystic ovarian masses in 77 patients were evaluated using 0.15 Tesla MRI just before laparotomy at Okayama University Hospital from 1984 to 1987 and these images were followed up by histopathological data. From these obtained images, 6 parameters; that is (1) laterality and (2) delineation of the cyst, (3) presence or absence of septal image, and (4) homogeneity, (5) signal intensity and (6) T1 value of the cyst contents, were extracted and anal

Nasolabial cysts are painless, submucosal, non-odontogenic jaw cysts presenting as soft tissue swellings in the maxillary anterior mucolabial fold lateral to midline, leading to elevation of nasal ala. Present case documents bilateral nasolabial cysts in a 69-year-old Asian female patient. In the present case, extraoral swelling of maxillary lip and elevation of nasal ala was observed on right side of the face. Intraorally, soft and fluctuant bilateral cysts were observed. Straw-colored fluid was aspirated from the right cyst. Radiographically, erosion of bone in a "cupping" fashion was observ

A 56-year-old G3P3 postmenopausal woman presented with a 5 month history of abnormal uterine bleeding and pelvic pain. A computed tomographic scan revealed a 5 cm right adnexal cystic mass in addition to a thickened, heterogenous endometrium and leiomyomatous uterus. A total laparascopic hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy with omental and peritoneal biopsy were performed. Gross examination revealed a 12 week size uterus with small fibroids, normal bilateral atrophic ovaries, and a right paratubal cyst. A 4 cm vegetating mass was found in the right side of the uterine wall. Micros

BACKGROUND: Symptomatic extensive spinal extradural meningeal cyst (SEMC) developing after traumatic brachial plexus injury (TBPI) is rare. We discuss the mechanism of extensive SEMC development, surgical strategies, and preventive measures against SEMC after TBPI.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 58-year-old man with TBPI 16 years previously developed spastic paraparesis of the lower limbs, sensory disturbance below the periumbilical level, and dysfunction of bladder and bowel over 2 years. The patient couldn't walk and was wheelchair bound. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed an extensive multiloc

An imbalance between pro-angiogenic and anti-angiogenic factors is hypothesized in the pathogenesis of ovarian cystic disease. The aim of the following study was to explore the possible role of free vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 1 (sVEGFR-1), a soluble regulator of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) action, in ovarian cystoadenoma, endometriomata and cystoadenocarcinoma. Forty-eight women, of whom fourteen had ovarian serous cysts, twenty-eight had stage III-IV ovarian endometriomata, and six had stage IIIB-IIIC ovarian carcinoma, were included. Sampling of serum, peritone

A 5-½-month-old female Holstein-Friesian calf was presented with a history of recurring ruminal tympany and poor development. The absence of lung sounds on the right hemithorax suggested a right-sided intrathoracic pathology. Radiography and computed tomography revealed a large thin-walled cavernous lesion with a gas-fluid interface which almost completely filled the right thoracic cavity. Fluid aspirated from the lesion was clear, yellowish and odorless. These findings led to the diagnosis of a bronchogenic cyst. Thoracotomy was performed under general anesthesia. The cyst strongly adhered to

Pretibial cyst formation is an uncommon but clinically significant complication following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction using bioabsorbable poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) interference screws. This study reviews six cases of pretibial cyst formation after ACL reconstruction to evaluate its etiology, clinical presentation, and treatment outcomes. A retrospective analysis was conducted on six patients from a cohort of 446 ACL reconstructions performed with PLLA screws. Patients presented 2-4 years postoperatively with pretibial swelling and tenderness without systemic infection or al

BACKGROUND: Spinal extradural arachnoid cyst is an uncommon cause of spinal cord compression. It results from a small dural defect that leads to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) accumulation in the cyst and subarachnoid space, and the cyst can compress the spinal cord and nerve roots. Surgery is the treatment of choice in symptomatic patients, and most cases have an immediately satisfying outcome after surgery.

Lymphatic type of adrenal cysts is most common; however, this type of endothelial cyst is quite rare in excessively large adrenal cysts. A 37-year-old Japanese woman was admitted to our institution with distension of her left flank and the upper quadrant of her abdomen. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed a cystic lesion with a homogenous anechoic texture, and measuring 21 cm in diameter. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging displayed a giant cystic lesion adjacent to the liver, pancreas, kidney, and spleen. The origin of the cyst was not identified. We were not able to make a pre

Inhibin is a peptide hormone which is produced by ovarian granulosa cells during normal follicular development. It is important that granulosa cells are recognized in fine needle aspirates (FNAs) of ovarian cystic lesions, as this allows definite recognition of a functional cyst and exclusion of a potentially neoplastic epithelial lined cyst. Occasionally the distinction between granulosa and epithelial cells may be difficult, especially when aspirates from functional cysts are unusually cellular. In the present study, FNAs from 33 ovarian cystic lesions were immunostained with a monoclonal an

INTRODUCTION: Differential radiologic diagnosis of cystic malformations of the posterior fossa is often difficult with conventional imaging techniques because of overlapping features of these entities. Posterior fossa cystic malformations occupy the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) spaces. They may create secondary dynamic effects on the movements of CSF. The aim of this study was to investigate CSF flow alterations in posterior fossa cystic malformations with CSF flow MR imaging.
METHODS: The study included 40 patients with cystic malformations of the posterior fossa. The patients underwent cardiac

A "two-hit" hypothesis predicts a second somatic hit, in addition to the germline mutation, as a prerequisite to cystogenesis and has been proposed to explain the focal nature for renal cyst formation in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). It was reported previously that Pkd1(null/null) mouse kidney epithelial cells are unresponsive to flow stimulation. This report shows that Pkd1(+/null) cells are capable of responding to mechanical flow stimulation by changing their intracellular calcium concentration in a manner similar to that of wild-type cells. This paper reports that h

In two female individuals (37 and 47 years old) sacral intradural arachnoid cysts caused low back pain and sciatica for several years until the correct diagnosis was established by MR imaging. Both patients had micturition disturbances (pollakisuria). In both cases a sacral laminectomy was carried out and the dorsal border of the cyst wall was resected (marsupialisation) after evacuation of xanthochrome fluid. Neither cysts showed any communication with the subarachnoid space. Postoperatively the patients were free of complaints; pollakisuria disappeared within 2-4 weeks.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Branchial cleft cyst is a common congenital lesion of the neck. This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of ethanol ablation as an alternative treatment to surgery for branchial cleft cyst.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between September 2006 and October 2016, ethanol ablation was performed in 22 patients who refused an operation for a second branchial cleft cyst. After the exclusion of 2 patients who were lost to follow-up, the data of 20 patients were retrospectively evaluated. All index masses were confirmed as benign before treatment. Sonography-guided aspiration of t

Imagenological diagnosis of subarachnoid neurocysticercosis is usually difficult when classical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences are used. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the advantages of 3D MRI sequences (Fast Imaging Employing Steady-state Acquisition (FIESTA) and Spoiled Gradient Recalled Echo (SPGR)) with respect to classical sequences (Fluid Attenuation Inversion Recovery (FLAIR) and T1) in visualizing Taenia solium cyst in these locations. Forty-seven T. solium cysts located in the basal cisterns of the subarachnoid space were diagnosed in eighteen Mexican patients.

Most of these maxillary cysts are asymptomatic and often only require observation. However, the presence of these benign maxillary cysts may create problems when maxillary sinus all types of implants are needed. Various treatment methods have been introduced. The selected treatment option depends on the type, size, and location of the cyst and its symptoms. Patients and.

Eleven parathyroid cysts were found in 325 patients who underwent parathyroid operations. Ten cysts were located in the neck and one was located in the mediastinum. The cysts ranged in size from 1.6 to 10 cm with a mean of 3.9 cm. The patients who had cysts included six women and five men, and their ages ranged from 28 to 72 years with a mean of 51 years. In contrast to other reports that have suggested that most parathyroid cysts are nonfunctional, all but one of our patients had hyperparathyroidism, as evidenced by hypercalcemia, hypophosphatemia, and elevated parathyroid hormone level, whic
