Insights into Antimicrobial Peptides from Spiders and Scorpions.

The venoms of spiders and scorpions contain a variety of chemical compounds. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) from these organisms were first discovered in the 1990s. As of May 2015, there were 42 spider's and 63 scorpion's AMPs in the Antimicrobial Peptide Database (http://aps.unmc.edu/AP). These peptides have demonstrated broad or narrow-spectrum activities against bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites. In addition, they can be toxic to cancer cells, insects and erythrocytes. To provide insight into such an activity spectrum, this article discusses the discovery, classification, structure and

A novel cytochrome P450 CYP6AB14 gene in Spodoptera litura (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and its potential role in plant allelochemical detoxification.

Cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (P450s) play a prominent role in the adaptation of insects to host plant chemical defenses. To investigate the potential role of P450s in adaptation of the lepidopteran pest Spodoptera litura to host plant allelochemicals, an expressed sequence data set derived from 6th instar midgut tissues was first mined. One sequence identified from the S. litura 6th instar midgut EST database was determined by phylogenetic analysis to belong to the CYP6AB P450 subfamily, and named CYP6AB14. Dietary supplementation of S. litura larvae with either xanthotoxin (XAN), coumarin (

Renal cell carcinoma: Review of etiology, pathophysiology and risk factors.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The global incidence of renal cell cancer is increasing annually and the causes are multifactorial. Early diagnosis and successful urological procedures with partial or total nephrectomy can be life-saving. However, only up to 10% of RCC patients present with characteristic clinical symptoms. Over 60% are detected incidentally in routine ultrasound examination. The question of screening and preventive measures greatly depends on the cause of the tumor development. For the latter reason, this review focuses on etiology, pathophysiology and risk factors for renal neoplasm.

A quantitative structure-toxicity relationships model for the dermal sensitization guinea pig maximization assay.

We have developed quantitative structure-toxicity relationship (QSTR) models for assessing dermal sensitization using guinea pig maximization test (GPMT) results. The models are derived from 315 carefully evaluated chemicals. There are two models, one for aromatics (excluding one-benzene-ring compounds), and the other for aliphatics and one-benzene-ring compounds. For sensitizers, the models can resolve whether they are weak/moderate or severe sensitizers. The statistical methodology, based on linear discriminant analysis, incorporates an optimum prediction space (OPS) algorithm. This algorith

The lung-gut-brain axis in non-small-cell lung cancer: a narrative review with a systematic search of three signaling pathways.

BACKGROUND: The gut-lung axis, the long-range communication between the intestinal microbiota and the lungs, has been shown to influence immunotherapy responses in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Existing reviews, however, focus almost exclusively on the chemical signaling dimension of microbial metabolites. The relay function of enteroendocrine hormones and the integrative role of the nervous system have yet to be incorporated into a unified framework. METHODS: We searched seven databases (PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, CNKI, Wanfang, and VIP) from inception to June 20

Current Perspectives on the Management of Patients Poisoned With Novichok: A Scoping Review.

INTRODUCTION: Nerve agents have emerged as a global threat since their discovery in the 1930s, posing severe risks due to their inhibition of acetylcholinesterase and the subsequent accumulation of acetylcholine in nerve synapses. Despite the enforcement of the Chemical Weapon Convention to control chemical weapons, including nerve agents, recent events, such as the Novichok attacks on Sergei Skripal and Alexei Navalny, have highlighted the persistent threat. Novichok, a distinct class of nerve agents, raises specific concerns regarding its management due to limited understanding. This article
