BACKGROUND: Anaemia during pregnancy is associated with maternal depressive symptoms during pregnancy and the postpartum period. However, the effect of anaemia development during pregnancy on maternal psychological health in non-anaemic women remains unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of anaemia development during pregnancy on maternal psychological health during pregnancy and the postpartum period.
METHODS: This study includes a secondary analysis of data collected prospectively from the Korean Pregnancy Outcome Study. Depression and anxiety were evaluated in each trimester and 4

Depression is the most common psychological disorder during the perinatal period, and its negative effects extend to mothers, babies, their family and society. Scientific evidence points to the urgency of designing preventive interventions and concludes that the gestational period is the most appropriate time to implement these interventions. However, many pregnant women do not seek professional help due to a lack of knowledge about the importance of mental health, its impact, and the available intervention options, as well as a lack of time and financial resources. E-health interventions can

BACKGROUND: Maternal depressive symptoms are negatively associated with early child growth in developing countries; however, few studies have examined this relation in developed countries or used a longitudinal design with data past the second year of the child's life. We investigated if and when early maternal depressive symptoms affect average growth in young children up to age 6 in a nationally representative sample of US children.
METHODS: Using data from 6,550 singleton births from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study -- Birth Cohort (ECLS-B), we fit growth trajectory models with rando

Background: Poor sleep and prior depression are key predictors of perinatal depression, with research suggesting depressive symptoms may emerge in early pregnancy. Sleep is a potentially modifiable risk factor for depression. This pilot study examined the feasibility and acceptability of a six-month sleep education intervention designed to optimize sleep and minimize depressive symptoms throughout pregnancy. Sleep measures and depressive symptoms are described from 12 weeks gestation to 12 weeks postpartum.Participants: A community sample of nulliparous pregnant women with a history of depress

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this report was to examine the course of smoking among pregnant women with concurrent substance use, and to assess the impact of depression on smoking.
METHODS: Data were gathered as part of a randomized controlled trial assessing the efficacy of substance abuse treatment in pregnant women. Women (n=176) were recruited before 28 completed weeks of pregnancy, and followed until 3months postpartum. Depression was assessed using the Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology and the MINI Neuropsychiatric Interview. Our outcome was the average number of cigarettes smoked per

OBJECTIVE: To investigate associations between fathers' postpartum depression and whether their children lived with them at 3 subsequent time points.
METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of a national US cohort of mostly nonmarital births. Paternal depression was assessed when the child was age 1 and fathers' co-residence was assessed when their children were ages 3, 5, and 9. We estimated unadjusted and adjusted logistic regression models of associations between paternal depression in the postpartum year and father's subsequent co-residence with the child.
RESULTS: Among 1691 new fath

Postpartum depression (PPD) is characterized as a depressive episode conditional on childbirth. We examined whether the risk of depression is higher following childbirth than that at a randomly generated time unrelated to childbirth. In a prospective cohort of all women with live singleton births in Sweden, 1997-2008, we first calculated the relative risk (RR) of PPD for mothers with a history of depression compared to mothers without such a history. Next, we repeated the calculations, but now for depression following a computer-generated arbitrary "phantom delivery" date, unrelated to the tru

BACKGROUND: Partner support during childbirth is an important protective factor for women's perinatal mental health. However, its protective role in women experiencing vulnerabilities is largely unknown, namely in those with history of mental health problems.
AIM: This study analysed (1) the association between partner support during childbirth and depressive, anxiety, and childbirth-related post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms in the postpartum period; and (2) the moderating role of previous diagnosis of mental health problems in those associations.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study with 284

IMPORTANCE: Pursuant to the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA), continuous Medicaid eligibility during the COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE) created a de facto national extension of pregnancy Medicaid eligibility beyond 60 days postpartum.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of continuous Medicaid eligibility with postpartum health insurance, health care use, breastfeeding, and depressive symptoms.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study using a generalized difference-in-differences design included 21 states with continuous prepolicy (2017-2019) and postpoli

BACKGROUND: Traumatic births impact women's long-term health, family dynamics, and healthcare systems, underscoring the need for prevention and effective interventions. Despite Italy's universal healthcare, perinatal mental health services and guidelines, especially for childbirth-related PTSD (CB-PTSD), remain underdeveloped. This study aims to investigate the prevalence of CB-PTSD, postpartum depression (PPD), and anxiety in Italian women 6-12 weeks postpartum, and assess the impact of comorbidities on mother-child bonding.
METHOD: The study was part of a broader longitudinal research that

OBJECTIVES: This longitudinal study investigated bidirectional links between objective and self-reported sleep and symptoms of depression and anxiety in both parents from pregnancy to 12 months postpartum. Using Random Intercept Cross-Lagged Panel Models (RI-CLPM), we examined whether sleep disturbances predict later depressive and anxiety symptoms and vice versa.
METHODS: A total of 232 couples were recruited during pregnancy. Data were collected in the third trimester and at 4, 8, and 12 months postpartum. Sleep was assessed over seven nights using actigraphy and diaries. Parents completed

BACKGROUND: Postnatal depression, with a prevalence of at least 10%, is probably the most common complication of the puerperium. A deficiency or imbalance of sex hormones has repeatedly been suggested as a cause.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this review was to evaluate the role of oestrogens and progestogens in the prevention and treatment of postnatal depression.
SEARCH STRATEGY: The register of clinical trials maintained and updated by the Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group.

UNLABELLED: Symptoms of anxiety in pregnant and postpartum women are of considerable concern due to their association with adverse obstetrical outcomes, postpartum depression, and emotional and behavioral problems in the children. Certain mothers are at particularly high risk for anxiety in the immediate postpartum period: those who have experienced preterm birth or other perinatal complications, as well as those lacking a satisfactory marital relationship or other forms of social support.
CONCLUSION: Programs to detect and intervene with anxious mothers in the early postpartum period are war

OBJECTIVE: Women have an increased risk for mental distress and depressive symptoms in relation to pregnancy and birth. The serotonin transporter (SERT) may be involved in the emergence of depressive symptoms postpartum and during other sex-hormone transitions. It may be associated with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of the main serotonin metabolite 5-hydroxyindolacetic acid (5-HIAA). In 100 healthy pregnant women, who were scheduled to deliver by cesarean section (C-section), we evaluated 5-HIAA and estradiol contributions to mental distress 5 weeks postpartum.

BACKGROUND: Identifying factors that are predictive for postpartum posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is important to inform clinical and research practice. Yet prospective longitudinal studies investigating symptoms of postpartum PTSD and their prevalence, evolution, comorbidities, and predictors remain limited. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of women's symptoms of PTSD at different times in the postpartum period and to identify comorbidities and predictive factors in a French-speaking sample.
METHODS: A total of 168 women participated in this longitudinal study, whic

BACKGROUND: Scant literature exists on whether prior pregnancy loss (miscarriage, stillbirth, and/or induced abortion) increases the risk of postpartum psychiatric disorders-specifically depression and anxiety-after subsequent births. This study compares: (1) risk factors for depression and/or anxiety disorders in the postpartum year among women with and without prior pregnancy loss; and (2) rates of these disorders in women with one versus multiple pregnancy losses.

PURPOSE: To examine the impact of postpartum sleep disturbance on 24-hour milk volume and breastfeeding during the early postpartum period. Factors associated with postpartum sleep disturbance also were examined.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A descriptive, correlational design was used. The sample included 29 first-time mothers exclusively breastfeeding healthy, full-term newborns. A home visit was conducted to collect self-report data for sleep, stress, fatigue, depression, and anxiety at 2 weeks postpartum. Infant test weights as an estimate of 24-hour milk volume also were performed. At 1 mon

The purpose of this study was to investigate intergenerational patterns of abuse and trauma and the health consequences for women in the early childbearing years. A prospective pregnancy cohort of 1507 nulliparous women (≦24 weeks gestation) were recruited in Melbourne, Australia, 2003-2005. Follow-up was scheduled in late pregnancy, 3-, 6- and 12-month and 4-year postpartum. Childhood abuse was retrospectively reported at 4-year postpartum using the Child Maltreatment History Self Report. Intimate partner violence (IPV) was assessed at 1- and 4-year postpartum with the Composite Abuse Scale.

BACKGROUND: Women with bipolar disorder (BD) are at high risk for postpartum affective episodes and psychosis. Although validated screening tools are available for postpartum unipolar depression, few screening tools for hypomania/mania exist. Screening tools for BD in the postpartum period are essential for improving detection and planning appropriate treatment. We evaluated whether adding the Mood Disorders Questionnaire (MDQ) to the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) increased the identification of BD in the early postpartum period.
