Intestinal permeability in dermatitis herpetiformis.

Differential absorption of D-xylose and 3-0-methyl-D-glucose, and unmediated intestinal permeation (simple diffusion) of lactulose and L-rhamnose, have been investigated in 20 patients with dermatitis herpetiformis. Both iso-osmolar and hyperosmolar test solutions were employed and the results were compared with those obtained from a group of healthy adult volunteers. The findings in each patient have been correlated with small intestinal histology. The majority of patients with villous atrophy had abnormally raised intestinal lactulose permeation and lactulose/rhamnose permeability ratios, wh…

Clinical correlates with diaper dermatitis.

Three types of clinical studies were carried out to better understand diaper dermatitis in a general infant population. In 'snapshot' clinical studies, skin condition under the diaper was evaluated at a given point in time across a large base of infants. Correlations were sought between diaper dermatitis incidence and severity and a number of factors, including sex, diet, maturity, type of diaper, history of allergy, contact with fecal matter, presence of Candida albicans, and diaper change frequency. Severe diaper rash correlated strongly with the presence of C. albicans, and the frequency of…

Familial incidence of dermatitis herpetiformis.

Dermatitis herpetiformis and gluten-sensitive enteropathy are diseases in which exposure to gluten results in an inflammatory response. Both diseases are associated with certain human lymphocyte antigen alleles, and gluten-sensitive enteropathy is well known to cluster in families. Gluten-sensitive enteropathy has also been reported in families of patients with dermatitis herpetiformis. Despite this evidence that dermatitis herpetiformis is a genetic disease, reports of the familial occurrence of dermatitis herpetiformis are rare. We have obtained family histories from 92 patients with dermati…

Occupational dermatitis associated with garments.

An outbreak of irritant contact dermatitis associated with residual percholorethylene (PCE) in dry-cleaned garments was studied at a large semiconductor manufacturing facility. A new method was developed to measure PCE levels which detected concentrations of 0.83 to 32.01 ppm in the garment.

Contact dermatitis to antituberculosis drugs.

The literature has been reviewed for contact dermatitis occurring to antituberculosis agents. Of the 12 known drugs, 6 (isoniazid, rifampicin, ethambutol, para-aminosalicylic acid, streptomycin and kanamycin) have been documented by patch test to cause this type of dermatitis in certain individuals. Cross sensitization has been observed to contribute significantly to the allergic reactions noted from isoniazid, streptomycin, and kanamycin. Hyposensitization has also been discussed in this review.
