Personality subtyping and bulimia nervosa: psychopathological and genetic correlates.

BACKGROUND: There is empirical evidence suggesting that individuals with bulimia nervosa vary considerably in terms of psychiatric co-morbidity and personality functioning. In this study, latent profile analysis was used to attempt to identify clusters of bulimic subjects based on psychiatric co-morbidity and personality. METHOD: A total of 178 women with bulimia nervosa or a subclinical variant of bulimia nervosa completed a series of self-report inventories of co-morbid psychopathology and personality, and also provided a buccal smear sample for genetic analyses. RESULTS: Three clusters of

[What nosographic framework for excessive tanning?].

BACKGROUND: Socially valorised tanning, like other forms of behaviour, can take on an addictive aspect. Excessive tanning, defined by the presence of impulsivity and repetition of tanning that leads to personal distress, is a psychiatric disorder that has only recently been recognized. This finding is based on the observations of many dermatologists who report an addictive relationship in their patients with tanning cabins despite announcement of the diagnosis of malignant melanoma. OBJECTIVE: This article attempts to synthesize the existing literature on excessive tanning and addiction to in

Eating disorders, substance use disorders, and impulsiveness among disordered gamblers in a community sample.

Disordered gambling and many eating disorders (EDs) involve recurrent loss of impulse control. We examined rates of specific EDs, ED psychopathology, substance use disorders, and their interrelationships with impulsiveness among community members with disordered gambling. Community-recruited adults with pathological (n = 95) or problem (n = 9) gambling (N = 104; 51% female) completed structured interviews and questionnaires. We observed high rates of substance dependence, lifetime EDs, and current ED psychopathology; 20.8% of women (vs 1.9% of men) had a DSM-IV ED, and 37.8% (vs 3.9%) had an E

Prediction of suicidality and violence in hospitalized adolescents: comparisons by sex.

OBJECTIVE: To examine psychological correlates of suicidality and violent behaviour in hospitalized adolescents and the extent to which these associations may be affected by their sex. METHOD: A sample of 487 psychiatric inpatients (207 male, 280 female), aged 12 to 19 years, completed a battery of psychometrically sound self-report measures of psychological functioning, substance abuse, suicidality, and violent behaviour. We conducted multiple regression analyses to determine the joint and independent predictors of suicide risk and violence risk. In subsequent analyses, we examined these ass

Impulse control disorders in adults with obsessive compulsive disorder.

Little is known about impulse control disorders (ICDs) in individuals with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Although studies have examined ICD comorbidity in OCD, no previous studies have examined clinical correlates of ICD comorbidity in a large sample of individuals with a primary diagnosis of OCD. We examined rates and clinical correlates of comorbid ICDs in 293 consecutive subjects with lifetime DSM-IV OCD (56.8% females; mean age=40.6+/-12.9 years). Comorbidity data were obtained with the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV. ICDs were diagnosed with structured clinical interviews

DSM-IV intermittent explosive disorder: a report of 27 cases.

BACKGROUND: The authors' objective was to provide data regarding the demographic, phenomenological, course of illness, associated psychiatric and medical comorbidity, family history, and psychiatric treatment response characteristics of rigorously diagnosed subjects who met DSM-IV criteria for intermittent explosive disorder. METHOD: Twenty-seven subjects meeting DSM-IV criteria for a current or past history of intermittent explosive disorder were given structured diagnostic interviews. The subjects' medical histories, family histories of psychiatric disorders, and responses to psychiatric tr

Impulsive choice and response in dopamine agonist-related impulse control behaviors.

RATIONALE: Dopaminergic medication-related impulse control disorders (ICDs) such as pathological gambling and compulsive shopping have been reported in Parkinson's disease (PD). HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that dopamine agonists (DAs) would be associated with greater impulsive choice or greater discounting of delayed rewards in PD patients with ICDs (PDI). METHODS: Fourteen PDI patients, 14 PD controls without ICDs, and 16 medication-free matched normal controls were tested on the Experiential Discounting Task (EDT), a feedback-based intertemporal choice task, spatial working memory, and att

Comparative Analysis of Impulse Control Symptoms Among Individuals Receiving GPi-DBS or STN-DBS for Parkinson's Disease.

OBJECTIVE: Impulse control disorders (ICDs) are a complication of Parkinson's disease (PD) treatment, but whether deep brain stimulation (DBS) affects ICDs remains unknown. Studies have focused on de novo ICDs among individuals receiving subthalamic nucleus DBS (STN-DBS), but the effects of DBS of the globus pallidus pars internus (GPi-DBS) are less understood. Rates and severities of ICDs among individuals receiving GPi-DBS or STN-DBS were compared. METHODS: Twenty-seven individuals with PD receiving bilateral DBS (17 STN, 10 GPi-DBS) were prospectively enrolled. Before surgery, participants

Childhood Reports of Food Neglect and Impulse Control Problems and Violence in Adulthood.

Food insecurity and hunger during childhood are associated with an array of developmental problems in multiple domains, including impulse control problems and violence. Unfortunately, extant research is based primarily on small convenience samples and an epidemiological assessment of the hunger-violence link is lacking. The current study employed data from Wave 1 (2001-2002) and Wave 2 (2004-2005) of the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC). The NESARC is a nationally representative sample of non-institutionalized U.S. residents aged 18 years and older. Part

Basal Ganglia activity in pathological gambling: a fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography study.

BACKGROUND: Pathological gambling (PG) is a disorder classified as an impulse control disorder (DSM-IV) bridging impulsive, compulsive and addictive behaviors. The striatum and thalamus are supposed to be involved in the pathophysiological substrate of these behaviors. An increased relative glucose metabolic rate (rGMR) in patients with a diagnosis of PG had previously been reported in the medial and orbitofrontal cortex. We extended our studies to include functional alterations of the striatum and thalamus in a cohort of patients with PG before and after treatment with lithium. METHODS: Twen

Outcomes of patients with Parkinson disease and pathological gambling.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the outcomes of patients with Parkinson disease (PD) with pathological gambling (PG) from one Canadian Movement Disorders Clinic. METHODS: Assessments were performed in-person during routine clinic visits of all patients currently followed by one neurologist (OS). Pathological gambling was defined according to DSM-IV-TR criteria. Chart review was performed to obtain details on medication use, dosages, and patient demographics. Follow-up of patients with PG collected information on gambling behavior, PG management interventions, medications, treatment, and psychosocial

Fear of losing money? Aversive conditioning with secondary reinforcers.

Money is a secondary reinforcer that acquires its value through social communication and interaction. In everyday human behavior and laboratory studies, money has been shown to influence appetitive or reward learning. It is unclear, however, if money has a similar impact on aversive learning. The goal of this study was to investigate the efficacy of money in aversive learning, comparing it with primary reinforcers that are traditionally used in fear conditioning paradigms. A series of experiments were conducted in which participants initially played a gambling game that led to a monetary gain.

A pilot study on the effects of treatment with acamprosate on craving for alcohol in alcohol-dependent patients.

This study investigated the effects of treatment with acamprosate on craving for alcohol by using a contextual priming task with alcohol and neutral words and craving questionnaires (ACQ, OCDS) in alcohol-dependent patients who abstained from alcohol for 6 weeks. The acamprosate-treated group (n = 16) were given 666 mg t.d.s. with standard group-work aimed at abstinence. The unmedicated control group (n = 13) received only standard group therapy. The results showed that the acamprosate treated group was faster in their responses to craving-related stimuli and scored lower on craving questionna

Impulsivity in anxiety disorder patients: is it related to comorbid cyclothymia?

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between anxiety and impulsivity is controversial and not well explored. In a previous study we compared impulsivity, measured by different rating tools, in patients with anxiety disorders vs. healthy controls. In the same sample we now explore the influence of comorbid soft bipolar spectrum disorders on the relationship between anxiety disorders and impulsivity. METHOD: A sample including 47 subjects with anxiety disorder(s) and 45 control subjects matched for demographic, educational and work characteristics underwent a diagnostic evaluation by the Mini Neuropsych

[Diversity of obsessive-compulsive disorder and pharmacotherapy associated with obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders].

Serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRI) are effective in the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The response rate for SRI is approximately 50% and refractory OCD may exist. The effect of antipsychotics augmentation therapy has been established for this kind of patients. However, OCD is clinically and biologically heterogeneous neuropsychiatric disease and it will affect the response of pharmacotherapy. Several subtypes of OCD have been identified. Early onset OCD and hoarding symptoms dominant patients with OCD tend to resist SRI treatment. Antipsychotics augmentation with SRI is mu

Dysfunctional, but not functional, impulsivity is associated with a history of seriously violent behaviour and reduced orbitofrontal and hippocampal volumes in schizophrenia.

Aggression and violent acts have been linked with impulsive responding. We investigated whether impulsive personality trait, especially suggestive of dysfunctional impulsivity (i.e. fast and inaccurate responding where this is non-optimal), is associated with a history of seriously violent behaviour and specific brain deficits in schizophrenia. Twenty-four male participants with schizophrenia, of whom 10 had a history of serious physical violence, and 14 healthy male participants were assessed on impulsiveness (dysfunctional impulsivity), venturesomeness (functional impulsivity), and empathy.

Subjective impulsivity and baseline EEG in relation to stopping performance.

Impulsivity is a personality trait within the normal population, but also a feature of many psychiatric disorders that have been associated with poor inhibitory control. The aim of the present study was to examine the relation between subjective impulsivity, theta/beta EEG ratio, and inhibitory control in healthy individuals. In 15 high and 14 low impulsive healthy volunteers (as assessed by the I(7) questionnaire), resting state EEG was recorded during an eyes open condition to obtain estimates for theta and beta activity. Subsequently, a stop-signal task was presented where participants resp
