Four laboratories have participated in an external quality control assessment for the determination of 2-thiothiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid (TTCA). TTCA is used as a biomarker for exposure to CS2. A disulfide isomerization at the C-terminus of cobrotoxin occurred spontaneously by dissolving in alkali buffer. Irreversible conversion of cobrotoxin into its isomers was completely achieved within 4 days. An oxygen-doped GC/ECD system has been found to be highly sensitive to carbon disulfide (CS(2)). The detector shows a linear response up to at least 13 pmol of CS(2) injected and has a detection limit of 30 fmol. By combining the oxygen-doped GC/ECD with a purge-trap system, CS(2) in seawater can be readily separated and determined. A comparison is provided between an oxygen-doped ECD and a nondoped ECD.
