A 55-year-old man presented with intermittent episodes of urinary leak through the left groin following an abscess drainage at that site at the age of 5 years. Since then he had been suffering from recurrent urinary tract infections and urinary leak, which used to be treated symptomatically. Intravenous urogram (IVU), voiding cystourethrogram (VCU), and cystoscopy done in our institution revealed a bladder diverticulum with a stone in situ, which was communicating with the fistulous opening located in the left groin. Diverticulectomy and excision of the fistulous tract cured the patient. A lon…

OBJECTIVE: A 26-year-old woman presented with urinary frequency. Findings were negative on voiding cystourethrography. Cystourethroscopy failed to reveal a urethral diverticulum. A new method of virtual CT urethroscopy was performed using a 16-MDCT scanner. The orifice of the diverticulum was identified clearly on 3D virtual urethroscopy. Intraoperatively, the diverticulum was identified, with the orifice location compatible with that seen on virtual urethroscopy.
CONCLUSION: Virtual CT urethroscopy provides more information than conventional urethral examinations and is less invasive than co…

BACKGROUND: Urethral diverticula can occur after hypospadias repair, and may lead to stone formation, incomplete voiding, infection, postvoi … five, island onlay urethroplasty in seven and bladder mucosal graft in one child. The repair of the diverticulum in one stage was successful in 10 of the 13 patients. There was one recurrent diverticulum and two fistulas. A stricture was present in only one of the 13 patients but was detected overall in 14 of the 123 patients (11%).
CONCLUSION: Diverticula ar …

A 68-yr-old man complaining of sudden, postprandial chest pain visited the emergency room. His symptom had been aggravated during the preceding two days. Upper gastrointestinal contrast study with gastrographin showed leakage of dye from the epiphrenic diverticulum in the lower third of the esophagus. The primary repair was urgently carried out. Upper gastrointestinal contrast study 14 days after operation revealed an esophageal leakage which was small and confined. The patient was managed with conservative treatments such as intravenous hyperalimentation and broad-spectrum antibiotics. Forty-…

CONTEXT: Acute pancreatitis is usually due to well-known causes, such as biliary lithiasis and alcohol consumption. Anatomic abnormalities may represent a less frequent but important etiological factor.
CASE REPORT: The case of a 27 year old women complaining of acute pancreatitis associated with a large duodenal juxta-papillary diverticulum is presented.
CONCLUSIONS: Anatomic causes of pancreatitis must be considered in the diagnosis of the etiology of acute pancreatitis.

OBJECTIVES: Meckel diverticulum, a congenital gastrointestinal anomaly, is well studied in pediatrics, but less so in the adult population. At the Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC), in addition to the removal of Meckel diverticula in symptomatic patients, diverticula are commonly removed when found incidentally during other procedures. We present our experience over the past ten years with this condition, unusual in the adult population.
METHODS: From 1992 to 2002 at the Charleston Area Medical Center, Meckel diverticula were removed from 47 patients older than 18 years of age. We reviewe…

The case of a 40 year old male that, after the etiological study performed due to rectorrhages that was the only symptom he presented, was referred to an exploratory laparotomy. A disseminated adenocarcinoma arising in Meckeĺs diverticulum was detected and palliative segmentary resection of the small bowel was performed. The lack of previous symptoms lead to the dissemination of the disease and to the impossibility of curative surgical resection of the tumor.

Zenker's diverticulum is the single most common diverticular event arising in the esophagus. Its physiopathology is universally recognized. Lack of coordination between the propulsive pharyngeal contractions and the release of the upper esophageal sphincter creates abnormally high pressure in the pharyngeal chamber, resulting in the collapse of the posterior wall of the hypopharynx, i.e., the Laimer-Killian triangle (or Killian's dehiscence). The mucosal hernia that develops constitutes the diverticulum, which grows in volume and above all in length and is compressed between two rigid structur…

Meckel's diverticulum is known to present with myriad complications. However, its perforation followed by development of subphrenic abscess has not been reported in literature. We report this complication in an eleven-month-old child.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The study was done to investigate the frequency of Meckel's diverticulum, and its manifestations as the cause of abdominal disorders.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The material consisted of 71 patients with Meckel's diverticulum treated in our hospital during the years 1988-1998. From the material the age and sex were analyzed as well the outcome of patients. The histological findings of diverticulectomies were evaluated.
RESULTS: In a retrospective analysis 46 males (65.5%) and 25 females (34.5%) were found. At the same eleven-year study period Meckel's diverticulum was found d…

HISTORY AND ADMISSION FINDINGS: A 22-year-old man who had never been seriously ill previously was admitted because of epigastric pain and vomiting of bile.
INVESTIGATIONS: He had slight pain on pressure over the epigatric region and decreased intestinal peristaltic sounds. There was evidence of ileus of the small intestine both by ultrasound and radiologically.
TREATMENT AND COURSE: As the patient's condition deteriorated on conservative treatment, an exploratory laparotomy was performed. It revealed an invaginated Meckel's diverticulum, Ileus of the small intestine recurred postoperatively,…

Meckel's diverticulum is the congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract affecting about 2% of the population. It is a true diverticulum containing all layers of the ileum wall. Heterotopic tissue is frequently present (25%): gastric mucosa, duodenal mucosa, jejunal mucosa and pancreatic tissue. Meckel's diverticulum is localized about 50 cm from the ileo-colic valve on the external border of the ileum. Most of Meckel's diverticula are clinically silent; clinical symptoms (19%) are in cases of complications such as: strangulation of the bowel in a ring formed by the diverticulum, intussus…

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the sensitivity of angiography in revealing the vitellointestinal artery or other arteriographic abnormalities in patients in whom surgery subsequently proved Meckel's diverticulum.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From the 36 patients who had undergone a Meckel's diverticulectomy between 1980 and 1997 at Hammersmith Hospital or a referring hospital, we selected 18 who had undergone preoperative angiography at our institution. Case notes and angiograms of these 18 patients were reviewed for the presence of a persistent vitellointestinal artery or other…
